Don't miss to read this!!!

What did you learn about him and the organization?

Of course, have sent you already a private message.

it's usually a good idea to keep the message separate from the messenger. i found this book enlightened, wise, and efficacious. i respect the inspiration and how it is worked out and presented to the reader; the man and his organization -- whatever fault lines lie therein -- are secondary to the message, imo.
i am a christian of deep faith and found this book to be inspiring. it is not the yogi i worship, so i am not personally disappointed to find that he or his organization might come up short of perfection. but the ideas i gleaned from this book dove-tail handsomely (in certain ways) with what i understand from my own faith tradition -- the minister is secondary; the event is primary -- so i have taken from this book what i can use and have left the rest. usually a workable plan for us mere-mortals who seek enlightenment.
wisdom lies buried in many places and is usually worth digging for.

I found this book to be excellent in that it seems a credible source of eyewitness accounts of "siddhi's in action."

Don't know much about the discussion above (Josey / Dely), but purely speaking of it in terms of a book, I enjoyed reading it (I was an adolescent at the time), and it certainly made me think about some things. So that can't be all bad! Having said that, I carried on being the same ordinary person I was before, so neither did it have an enormous effect on my life or beliefs. But it is a good read!

Thanks Lululemon. I'll read that one. I find it's not so much that there are fake masters, just many souls who want to share their spiritual wisdom who haven't quite become enlightened yet, or still have rather large egos in their way! Ha ha! But It's part of our journey to want to share our wisdom, i think. This book is def up there anongst the best!

Hi Rosun. These days we think we have to do everything in a hurry. I think it doesn't matter if it takes us months, or even years to finish a truly inspirational, spitirually enlightening book like this one!

Thanks, i'll read that one. I've jsu seigned up to do SRF Lessons! It may take me a while!

Maybe it's time to re-read it Andy!

SRF also have two retreat centres in California. Lake Shrine in Santa Monica, LA, which was a beautiful oasis just on the coast. The other's down near San Diego . .. Haven't been there.

very true!

I have read the book and found it to be a fascinating read. But a question I would like to ask you all?
Do you not thing that some of the events described in the book were just too fantastical to be true? Do you really think they all happened?

I asked myself that often, Sagheer. Especially since, like many before him, he often said that such powers and siddhis are not necessarily indicative of a spiritually enlightened mind, and yet he was constantly talking about such things. But who knows... ? I like to think such things are possible.

As fantastic as the events were, I never doubted the validity of them (the scene when his guru re-appears I've read many times). The words resonated with me and I felt deep down they were true. Not a scientific answer to your question, but to me spiritual literature reaches us on higher level, one that we can't rationalize through our limited minds.

I totally agree, both are very good books!

One thing that concerned me about the book is when Paramahansa states that he does not believe me that people of different castes should marry. As he was of the opinion that interbreeding between castes would eliminate the caste. Hardly the opinion of a spiritually enlightened person would you not agree?

There was also a chapter in the book devoted to the resurrection of his guru Sri Yukteswar who miraculously appears and goes on to tell Paramahansa that he is inhabiting an astral plane where there are fairies and fish who can take the shape of people?
Are you really telling me hand on heart that you believed that when you read it?

Hi Sagheer, I found the footnote and see how it could be open to interpretation. I feel Guru was pointing to the four natural castes -- not in the traditional caste sense, but castes that are marked by the gunas. This might be a good question for the Self Realization Fellowship. You can speak directly to one of their monks who will answer any questions about Yogananda’s life and the fellowship. I have called in the past and found them to be very approachable and knowledgeable. Here’s the link: http://www.yoganandasrf.org/About_SRF...

In the book there is also a chapter devoted to the resurrection of his Guru Sri Yukteswar do you agree with what asserted in that chapter? Astral planes with fairies and people with three eyes and fish who can turn themselves into people? Did it not all seem a bit too contrived? Bottom line. Although truth can be stranger than fiction. Do you think that is the truth?

I think some peeps confuse lucid dreams with astral planes/alternate dimensions, etc. which exist independently of them. Your description (I read the book about 35 years ago) sounds very dreamlike to me.
