Book first but after that which film was best?

Kirsten I have to agree with those who say the BBC version was far better than the film. Primarily I didn't feel like Keira Knightly (who normally I love in films) portrayed Lizzie very well amongst other things. Then again, if I have the time I always go back to the book!

Though for those who are saying the BBC version was stilted/ slow etc etc, I wouldn't be surprised if this is because they watched it all at once. It was a mini series that was shown over a number of weeks the first time it was seen, so the story would have had to be stretched a little to keep people coming back to watch.

But that's only my opinion, not saying anyone else is wrong!

Elisa Santos The BBC version was not slow - just as the book is not slow, at least in my opinion; it is as you said, as a mini-series, showned over the course of 6 weeks, it allowed them more time to develop the plot properly.

And i know of no other mini-series - or the 2005 film version, at that - that stopped the country on the last ep: even the English Parliament closed session early in order for them to go home and see the end of this stunning, spectacular series.

Claire The Kiera Knightley version is my favorite. I loved how they did it and the music in it is amazing! One of my favorite movies :)

Suzanne Phyoe I really really like the book... nothing can top the book of course... As for the movie, I like the BBC version better and in the 2005 version I only like Jane... the rest of the crew... don't like it... I don't think 2005 version goes accordingly to the book. I won't watch it again. But I can watch many times for the BBC version though. :D

Nicole You only liked Jane????!!!! Lizzy is by far the best.

message 156: by Sofia (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sofia The 2005 version with Matthew MacFayden, definitely!
He's the best Mr Darcy of the cinema ;)

I made a broadcast about the 3 big movie adaptations of this book, so I'm really giving my conscious opinion :)

Maria The BBC version, it's what got me to read the book! And it's actually pretty close to the book, I liked that. It is a little slow, but then, I've seen plenty of other British shows so I could handle it. The only real problem with it to me is that Mr. Darcy looked like a stalker, the way he kept staring at Lizzie. But still a really good adaptation to me.

I haven't seen the Keira Knightley version, mainly because I've only just started appreciating that Ms. Knightley may in fact be a good actress (she was excellent in the recent Freud/Jung movie A Dangerous Method), but I absolutely adore the BBC version of the novel. It's one of the few times where I've seen an adaptation manage to remain absolutely faithful to the spirit of the original work, whilst incorporating enough modern elements to point out the continued relevance of the source material. I'm not sure where you got the sense of 'lag' in the series, as I find it hares along at quite a pace, considering it is a mini-series rather than a standalone movie. I'll have to hunt out the Knightley one now and compare.

message 159: by [deleted user] (new)

I've only watched the 2005 version... and all I can say is that there's this one scene between Elizabeth and Darcy where he helps her onto a carriage. She's like "Oh, goodness. He touched me!" and turns away quickly (I call that a Darcy-ism) and while he's walking away, he does this odd hand twitchy thing. It's so weird how I remember this but it made me love the movie.

message 160: by Shanna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Shanna I loved both for different reasons. The BBC one because of it's faithfulness to the book, an oh the wet shirt scene which at the time in my late adolescence was HOT. But the 2005 version is just visually beautiful. And there are just so many scenes like the hand one mentioned in #169 where he feels the electricity and is trying to memorise the sensation, and the kissing scene. But I really didn't like the 2005 Mr Bingley, but I felt the 2005 Mrs Bennet got a fairer hearing.

Sofia I wonder if someone saw the movie from 1940?
Just curious, it's a funny adaptation :D

Trace Riles No, I haven't. Didn't even know it existed. I'll have to source it out. Thanks for pointing that out, Sofia.

message 164: by Mary (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mary I own the 1940s version with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. As far as an adaptation, it is pretty bad, but if you shed all of your Austen purity it is kind of funny.

Yes, they didn't respect the plot nor the details. But for me it's more like a comedy. Not bad if you want to entertain yourself :)

message 175: by Marren (new) - rated it 2 stars

Marren I have watched all the versions of Pride and Prejudice (well that I know), 2005 film is my favourite and the greatest to me. Yes, it is not exactly like the book but it adds colour, texture and fun for viewers. Matthew plays Mr. Darcy very well.

message 176: by Anja (new) - rated it 3 stars

Anja I definitely prefer BBC's version. Actors,in general, are better. I find it more authentic and book-like(the scenery, dialogs, costumes). The biggest flaw of the 2005 movie is Kiera Knightley. Her portrayal is nothing compering to Jeniffer Ehle's and it doesn't suit Lizzy's character from the book. Elisabeth is very opinionated and sarcastic even, but she lived in time and society very different then ours, which Kiera didn't portray. Elisabeth is smart, but never rude or disrespectful. Kiera is quite the opposite. She acts more in a manor of a spoiled, pouty 21st century teenager, which is more like Lidia's behaviour.
Scenes in the 2005 movie are spectacular, very visually impressive, but for me, it is too much of special effects.
Another thing I was bothered with was Bingley's sister and forgotten other sister. It's ridiculous. Caroline is so modern and lacks in sarcasm, pride, and above all class. And I know Mr. Hurst(other Bingley's sister) isn't extremely important character but adds to the story and image of whole Bingley family (like Mary Bennet for example).
Wickham's character in the 2005 movie also lacks some important characteristics. He' to mellow, has no presence,no charm,he's just pretty, which isn't Wickhams main characteristic.
There are some good thing in the movie, like Mr. Darcy. I love Colin Firht, but Matthew did an amazing job. He made it his own,but stayed very close to character from the book. He is definitely above all the other in the movie. Also,he's gorgeous :D (so is Colin,so hard to choose XD).
I also like Mrs. Bennet. Brenda Blethyn is fabulous actress. I like other sister, too. Especially Jane. Bingley and Mr.Collins are also fine.
Even though there are some good things in the movie, BBC's version has everything that I imagined while reading the book.

"shed all your Austen purity" LOL, I love it!

message 179: by Kyla (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kyla Pyne I didn't like that the 2005 one skipped so much of the book. I absolutely loved the one from 1995.

message 180: by Robin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Robin The 1995 version of the movie was good.

message 181: by Megumi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Megumi In my mom's words (picture a Japanese accent) "The movie is the readers digest version, the series has a lot more detail and story. Plus Colin Firth is hot". And that is pretty much my opinion too.

Other than Mr. Bingley, Caroline, Kitty and Lady Catherine, I found the actors/characters leaving me wanting a little more.

message 182: by Robin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Robin There is an Indian take on Pride and Prejudice called Bride and Prejudice for another take on the same theme.

Coffee&Books The BBC version. I tried watching the Kiera Knightly remake and I just couldn't stand it.

message 184: by Robin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Robin I liked Keira Knightly in The Duchess. Have not seen her in Pride and Prejudice. She is no Jennifer Ehle.

message 185: by Janine (new) - rated it 5 stars

Janine I definitely vote for the 1995 BBC version. I had read Pride and Prejudice in school, and wasn't a fan of that type of writing at that age. But after my aunt introduced me to the mini-series I completely fell in love with the story, characters, costuming, and locations. That led me to give Jane Austen's books another try, and I really appreciate her writing now.
My love of period dramas today is a direct result of watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice mini-series.

I doubt that would have happened if I had watched the 2005 movie version. The 2005 version is a mediocre movie, and I would sooner sit and watch the entire mini-series all over again (despite the slow pacing in parts).

Exactly--one of my favorites and one of the points where the 2005 was especially well done. I also like Mr. & Mrs. Bennett so much better in the 2005 movie. But, for the rest, I think I like the BBC mini series better, especially the lesser characters.

Lynn G. The BBC version is the best. It is authentic and holds closely to Austen's work. I thought the Keira Knightley film was a poorly done and butchered the story.

Ricardina Guimarães I loved the film version of "The Portrait of a Lady" a book by Henry James. The film has Nicole Kidman and John Malkovich in the main roles.
Another book adaptation I really liked is "Rebecca" book by Daphne Du Maurier and the film version was of course directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Main roles are played by Ingrid Bergman and Sir Laurence Olivier. I really loved this two!

message 195: by Samara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Samara Bouie I just have to add, with respect for the people wondering if lizzy and Darcy would have had sex, I would say that ending sounds out of character for the book...not because those two were perfect people, but because the book clearly draws a line between their characters compared to the people around them for instance wick am was clearly a foil for Darcy and to suspect that he would immulate wickams behavior in any way is just wrong, nothing to do with morals, everything to do with character

message 199: by Andres (new) - rated it 4 stars

Andres Just to let everyone here know, on September 29 (this coming Saturday) at 3:30 AM PST, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will be showing the 1940 version of 'Pride and Prejudice'. It's a uniquely fun take on the novel and worth checking out if you haven't already.

Purists be warned! This version is faithful to P&P's comic spirit but charmingly unfaithful to some of the events and characters.

Set your DVRs now (if you have the channel)!

BBC version. I didn't really enjoy the Keira Knightley version as it just lost the essential feel of the book for me.
