I have very mixed feelings about Ty. I won't state the obvious drawbacks to him, but I will say this: In the end, I kind of loved him, too. Just like Gemma. There was some inescapable quality about him, some beautiful innocence that you wanted to protect at all costs. The image of him inside a cement jail was perhaps the most disturbing part of the entire book. Not the kidnapping. Not the dehydration. No, it was thinking that such an innocent, broken, confused soul would be thrown inside a jail cell with inmates so much more terrible than him.
I felt the need to protect him throughout the reading, felt the need to hide him away where nothing else could hurt him anymore. Not his father or his mother or his past or his memories. Because, though Ty was a man on the outside, I think part of him--perhaps a rather large part of him--was still a lonely little child lost in the desert.
