http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-boi...
(explains why it happens and how it's prevented)

(This article at the above link gives some other interesting related information.)

I bought the following ceramic disk for $2.99. It's about 2 inches in diameter and prevents boil-overs. They call it a "Pot Minder":

The articles at the links above explain how it works.

PS-I found the ceramic disk yesterday in the "Kitchen Collection" store at the Adirondack Outlet Mall (on Route 9 in Lake George).

It was fun looking around at all the kitchen gadgets.
(Not that I cook or do anything so work-oriented... !)

I also enjoy browsing through hard-ware stores.
(Not that I can fix things or do anything that useful... !)

I just like to think about it.

Nina | 6069 comments Good info about the boil overs. We have a great kitchen store in the city and I am going to go have a look to see if they have one of those preventables. And I also loved reading the history of Coddled eggs.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I didn't see the bit about coddled eggs. But below is a Wiki link which explains what they are:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coddled_egg
"In cooking, coddled eggs are gently or lightly cooked eggs. They can be partially cooked, mostly cooked, or hardly cooked at all..."

I like my eggs soft-boiled on toast. While at the Kitchen Collection store, I bought an egg-poacher. I used it today. It cooks an egg similar to a soft-boiled egg but instead of boiling the unbroken egg in water, it uses the micro-wave. The egg is broken BEFORE it's cooked instead of after.
