Help - title please?

A friend of mine is trying to locate a book, but she doesn't remember the title or author!

It's about a young girl who lives on an island - maybe it's in New England.
She takes the ferry to school
She can project herself, somthing to do with using an amulet, into an Eagle.

does anyone have a clue which book this is?
