This book sounded like the script for a soap opera. Was it published on the author's credintials rather than talent?

I enjoyed this book as well. I like how it was written and was very interested when it all came together at the end. The author had me locked into the characters lives, I couldn't put it down.
I really enjoyed this book - grest setting - loved the apple orchard references! Joyce Maynard is an amazing writer who I heard lecture at the Aspen Institute last March....an interesting author with great talent.
