message 207: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I'm about halfway through The Boy in the Suitcase. I found the opening very confusing but now it's gripping. I'm curious about how the opening scenes will be worked into the resolution.

message 208: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Reading The Secret in Their Eyes which I am enjoying a lot. Haven't read very much with the setting in Argentina. Also reading an ARC of The Darlings which is about the Wall St. set and their downfall.

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments I just finished the book by Anthony Horowitz The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel and LOVED it! I hope he continues this as a series. It is def. one I would seek out!

message 210: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ This is the first book authorized by Doyle's estate. Haven't read it yet but will soon.

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Are you going to read it, Dee...

I am also wrapping up another one today called Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock, which is rockin' as well. I grabbed several good ones from the library last week!

message 215: by Dee, the Insanity Check (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 652 comments I am planning on reading The Submission - which Diane gave a decent review to, but first up is The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth: Popularity, Quirk Theory and Why Outsiders Thrive After High School

message 216: by Dee, the Insanity Check (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 652 comments ok, lied - I realized I can fit it into a current challenge since I DNF'd the book I was planning on using - I just reserved it at the library

Awww. I would be interested in the author's hypothesis, since I believe the title to simply be true!!

message 219: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanjoseph) | 25 comments Parallel Stories, a megabook by Peter Nadas: Parallelism makes explicit sexual writing no less obscene than relations among four women in their sixties who've known each other since school. Everything is tinged by the Holocaust, and for the women the extra suffering of growing old. Nadas is my exact contemporary. Is it this or that he plunges me into his lives that makes me share his nightmare? But how can I recommend it?

message 220: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Reading Until Thy Wrath Be Past. Has anyone else read this one? Also reading an ARC of The Invisible Ones and the beginning is fantastic.

Susan (susanjoseph) | 25 comments Diane wrote: "Reading Until Thy Wrath Be Past. Has anyone else read this one? Also reading an ARC of The Invisible Ones and the beginning is fantastic."

Thanks, Diane. I just got a sample of Until Thy Wrath Be Past delivered to my Kindle. We'll talk!

message 222: by ???!!! (new)

???!!! | 10 comments Just finished Lucifer's Tears (Inspector Kari Vaara, #2) by James Thompson and The Hypnotist A Novel by Lars Kepler . I like the former better, may not be intense but realistic enough. Plus some culture lessons abt Finland. As for The Hypnotist I think it tried to cover too many grounds. So I wondered why I need to know this stuff many times in the story.

message 223: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I have not yet gotten my copy of Don't Look Back by Karin Fossum which is frustrating but I am almost finished (well, 72%) The Boy in the Suitcase (Nina Borg, #1) by Lene Kaaberbøl which I like a good deal.

I am also reading (and enjoying) The Black Path (Rebecka Martinsson, #3) by Åsa Larsson . For some reason, I have grown very attached to poor Rebeccka Martinson (forgive the spelling errors)

message 224: by MARILYN (new)

MARILYN (MARILYNJ) | 80 comments I finished Lucifer's Tears and can hardly wait for the next one.

message 225: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments I need to cancel my print copy of LT and buy it on Kindle. My library already has Jim on a automatic order, so they won't need my copy.

Ellen (elliearcher) Just got my copy of Lucifer's Tears (Inspector Kari Vaara, #2) by James Thompson -can hardly wait to start but I have a waiting list! (I may have to jump my own line though; I'm just so excited).

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments I am currently reading a novel called The Good Father: A Novel by Noah Hawley. The book is absolutely breaking my heart. It is incredibly powerful and emotional. To sum it up, it is about a father whose son assasinates a presidential candidate. While trying to figure out why the son has done it, he reflects on who he was as a father and such.

The book was recommended to me and I am really happy it was.

Read this and loved it. Defending Jacob is also a very good read.

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Actually, weren't you the one who recommended it to me???

message 231: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Reading an ARC of The Lost Saints of Tennessee: A Novel. Also reading A Corpse's Nightmare: A Fever Devilin Novel which is a series I like a lot set in the Blue Mountains.

Probably, I liked it quite a bit, found it heartbreaking as well.

You know I think it is so real that anyone who is a parent could put themselves there and ask how they would react.

I through Defending Jacob on my wishlist with Amazon. I will grab it from my library if I am still around here.

message 234: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Just started Mind's Eye by Håkan Nesser It came through on my e-nypl hold so I couldn't wait, which I would have since I'm also way into Henning Mankell's The Dogs of Riga and Mari Jungstedt's Unseen. And for non-Nordic, I'm also reading Mr. Fox and The Tales of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav (a very interesting collection with helpful commentary).

message 235: by Kailey (new)

Kailey (lukutuokka) | 16 comments Now that I am on winter break from school I can read whatever I like!! I am just starting The Uprising by Vaino Linna. I have wanted to read the Under the North Star trilogy forever and had to stop after the first book because of school demands.

Steven | 2 comments I just finished The Snowmanwhich I loved and would like a recommendation of which book to read next by this author. I had a little trouble getting intoThe Devil's Star

message 237: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Reading Ice Moon and an ARC of Believing the Lie, both are very good.

Susan (susanthomas) Steven wrote: "I just finished The Snowmanwhich I loved and would like a recommendation of which book to read next by this author. I had a little trouble getting intoThe Devil's Star"

I guess this means you're not reading them in order? That makes suggesting something more difficult. I've just begun The Snowman, but I've read the series in order. I have the next book, The Leopard, waiting on my shelf. Did you read TheRedeemer?

Art | 57 comments Steven wrote: "I just finished The Snowmanwhich I loved and would like a recommendation of which book to read next by this author. I had a little trouble getting intoThe Devil's Star"

I'd read The Redbreast next and finish up the series from there.

message 240: by Art (new)

Art | 57 comments I've been reading lots of different things but not really anything Nordic or Noir at the moment...but I am listening to Cop Killer on CD as I work around the house right now.

message 241: by Steven (new)

Steven | 2 comments Actually the The Redbreastis the one that gave me trouble. I'll take your advice go back and start at the beginning. Thanks

message 242: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Finished Ice Moon which I did like, especially the main character or detective, though it is different from other Nordic crime novels, much moire psychological. Now reading Dregs which is fantastic so far and getting very good ratings, 4.57 so far.

message 243: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 22 comments I just picked up Nesbo's The Leopard will start it tonight

message 244: by Ed (new)

Ed (oct1647) | 8 comments I finished "The Leopard" today. Think "The Snowman" on steroids. Great energy, complexity, wit and style. One of the best books I've read this year.

message 245: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanjoseph) | 25 comments Just finished Nesbø's REDEEMER, though Anne reminded me that I don't like Nesbø much. Here's my review: Frelseren (Harry Hole, #6) Frelseren by Jo Nesbø

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Not the worst, but far from the best of the current crop of Nordic noirs, THE REDEEMER follows a disturbing series of murders starting with that of a Salvation Army leader in Oslo. Cinematic crosscutting of scenes adds to the suspense, and the plot is sufficiently contorted but not extremely neat. Even when balancing compassion with alcoholism, Harry Hole still is not a very attractive protagonist. Perhaps I've been reading too many of these, because I feel like I've been compulsively stuffing myself with leftovers.

Dee (austhokie) | 652 comments my Helsinki White showed up today, so i'm reading Lucifer's Tears - since I refused to read it before HW came out because of some of the reviews I read...yeah, i'm naughty...lol!
