I know you were directing your comments to someone else, but I like your suggestions. But neither compares to Nesbo, I gather. Does anybody write in similar tone and complexity as Nesbo?

Sharon Nesser
Gallows Bird by Camilla Lackberg
 Indridason's  book Outrage
Fossum's The Caller  and Don't Look Back
Keeper of lost causes,  Jussi Adler-Oldson note also publ as Mercy

Helene Tursten
Detective Inspector Huss
The Torso
The Glass Devil
Night Rounds      2/12

These are roughly a few tips I have had from Goodreads since joining...hope it helps.

In my opinion, as with all character driven books, it is important to read in order and do not worry there is a new HH on the way later in 2012. Here is my list, hope it helps
JO NESBO

Harry Hole books:
THE BATMAN. 1997
THE COCKROACHES 1998.  (both not trans into English)

The Redbreast. 2000/6
The Devil’s Star. 2003/5
Nemesis. 2002/8
The Redeemer. 2005/9
The Snowman 2007/10
The Leopard  2009/11
Phantom 2012/

The White Hotel 2007
Headhunters. 2008

Children's books...

date written/date English out.

message 104: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanthomas) Thanks, Sharon...I have only read the first three translated works,Redbreast/Devil's Star/Nemesis. I didn't realize there was a new HH coming out, but that's great news. Didn't know about the White Hotel, either. Have to look it up.

Have you read Olen Steinhauer's The Tourist and The Nearest Exit? They're not Nordic, but they are good works about a troubled covert CIA operative who desperately wants out of the game. I believe there is a 3rd book coming in the series.

Read one of Helene Tursten's books after finishing Larsson, but wasn't as enamoured with the female lead as I have been with the men who write about men. Is that sexist? I don't know!

message 105: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Hi there, Thanks for the tip, noted in my Books to get list!!
Can you tell, I am a list freak!
Go ahead and read Harry.....you will need some time between the next ones anyway as they get very exciting.....!
Have not tracked down White Hotel in English yet.
Ordered the Helene Tursten books after reading about them on here.
Embarrassing ...I do not seem to get to read as much nor as quickly as some of our friends on Goodreads so my stack and lists are building rather than going down!!
Welcome to Goodreads. Isn't it wonderful to chat to people who enjoy reading and books in common, even some good chatter on here about films and series.
I am backtracking a bit to catch myself up on the earliest Wallander books. Came in in the middle and then the series(s) on tv took over and although I kept up with all HM wrote after that, except some childrens and the Africa theme ones, I never got back to Kurt til now. Rather strange to be reading book one when I have just had a sad summer saying goodbye to him in The Troubled Man. But enjoying it nevertheless.
Enjoy.

Susan (susanthomas) Oh, so we're both reading Faceless Killers? How cool is that!
I am organizer for a casual bookclub for which I read random selections by the group. The noir stuff is what I prefer and gravitate toward when I have the freedom to choose. Not complaining though. I've read some interesting books I wouldn't have picked up otherwise. This month we're doing Henrietta Lacks, which I've yet to begin. Reading Mankell first b/c I can.

Keep in touch...it's great having a common interest and being able to communicate about it via the boards here.

Susan

It looks like Sharon has already completed Faceless Killers (Wallander #1) and has moved on to the second in the series. Still want to set up a dialogue?

Susan (susanthomas) Diane wrote: "Reading The Vault and The Kingdom of Childhood. Will be starting Roseanna which is the first book in the Martin Beck series."

Diane, I read Roseanna about a year ago at a time when I didn't really know a lot about the author/series. I'll be interested to hear what you think. I haven't read another of those books since, but I'm putting them back on my radar now that I am sort of piecing things together.

Nidia (ninio) | 57 comments I haven't been doing a lot of reading lately.... Life gets in the way sometimes...but I'm almost done with Misterioso. and have The Keeper of Lost Causes ready on my iPad so I can join the discussion too.

message 120: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanthomas) I'm finishing up Mankell's Faceless Killers, then I'll get to The Keeper of Lost Causes. Already loaded it onto my Kindle!

message 121: by Sharon (new)

Sharon The Keeper of Lost Causes / Mercy is on my Kindle too and am just getting into it.
Keen to hear what you thought of Faceless Killers?

message 122: by Nidia (new)

Nidia (ninio) | 57 comments Done with Misterioso. Wow! It read like a true police procedural novel - it required all my focus to keep up with lots of characters, names and details!
I liked the complex plot and the cast of characters but I though it lacked the intensity of Nesbo Jo or James Thompson which I really love.

My next read: The Keeper of Lost Causes

I summed up my thoughts on Faceless Killers in the discussion set aside for that book. I'll just say here that if I didn't know from others that the books get better as they go along, I would not follow Wallander's career and would concentrate on other writers I prefer. Began Keeper of Lost Causes and am sold on the author already...looking forward to seeing how it develops as I've really only begun.

Also reading TKOLC, Mercy on my kindle and know what you mean ...very good start so keen to get going with it again once I finish The Dogs of Riga which is truly excellent.

Hayley Stewart (haybop) Not reading any NN at the moment - I'm on the last book of the Man Booker Prize shortlist challenge: Pigeon English. I've then got another 3 books to read on my bookshelves before I can move on to Nesbo :(

Dee (austhokie) | 652 comments hayley - i'll be interested to hear your thoughts on pigeon english, I took a look at the audiobook but since none of my friends had listened or read, I didn't try it

Also reading some non-NN: The Map of Time

Dee - it's really good! I'm putting off finishing it at the moment but not for any bad reason, I've fallen in love with this little boy and don't want to end it, that and I'm really worried about how it may end... but can't skip forward to find out! My review'll be going up soon-ish - I'm ordering myself to finish reading it tonight :(

EDIT: Just finished - Dee, read it, honest, I really enjoyed it.

Cuppa Joe | 10 comments Now reading Hypothermia.

And reading The Hobbit to my not quite 5 year old son. Trying to get him hooked on the Tolkien addiction early. ;)

message 133: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Almost finished with Feast Day Of Fools which I am liking a lot. Started All Men of Genius which is my first steampunk novel. Also reading King of the Badgers.

message 134: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I'm reading The Dogs of Riga-my first Mankell-which I'm liking and Hypothermia which I'm loving

message 135: by Cuppa Joe (new)

Cuppa Joe | 10 comments Being a fan of John LeCarré , The Dogs of Riga was one of my favorite Wallander novels.

message 136: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I've never *blush* read John le Carré, at least that I remember.

I'm distressed though-my Kindle died last night in the middle of The Dogs of Riga. I was loving it then-pixillated screen.

They're sending me Number 7: I don't know what I'm doing to them other than reading. I got a cover, I never leaned on it or spilled anything on it. This one was only 2 weeks old and it was fine fine...gone.

*grrrrr* and *whimper*

message 137: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) *Hands Ellie a nice soothing cuppa*

Maybe it's your bad luck they've decided to send you all the iffy ones :( Heck, I've done worse to my Sony and it still works, I'm quite sure my sis has spilt tea on her Kindle and it's fine - hopefully 7th times the charm :D

P.S - never read John leCarre either, just never been in that section when in the right mood :S

Wow, Ellie, I've never heard of anyone having such problems with a Kindle. You should write a book. I have a first edition Kindle that still works along with a second generation that I currently use (received as a gift). Never had any trouble. Hope you get a better model this go round!

message 139: by Dee, the Insanity Check (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 652 comments i've heard of people who have had some bad juju with them but never 7 in a row

message 140: by Dave (new)

Dave | 44 comments Ellie, you might check your Kindle cover, if it's one of the Amazon branded ones. I recall they had some issues with some of those as the prongs that connected the kindle to the cover were shorting it out. It was a design flaw and they were replacing the covers for free. Just a thought.

I actually just recently discovered John le Carre myself. I highly recommend "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold". I've read that and the first two in the Karla Trilogy this last month, all were excellent but that was by far my favorite

message 141: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Thanks for the feedback folks-the cover is new so it would only explain #7. I'm wondering if it might be something to do with power surges or some other electrical issue in my house.

I'm glad I'm not the only one behind in find Le Carre.I have a copy of Our Kind of Traitor which looks interesting but I'm really interested in, of course, is his famous one, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold

message 142: by Art (new)

Art | 57 comments Just wrapped up Lucifer's Tears (and dealing with a slight migraine myself today only added to the drama in the book) I'm looking forward to the next one.
I will be catching up on The Keeper of Lost Causes and Voices over the weekend as I can.

Halfway through Lucifer's Tears and 2/3 of the way through Henrietta Lacks. I couldn't wait to delve into LT so it's made me drag out Henrietta, but that's ok!

message 147: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I'm reading Jar City (having read Hypothermia first, for some odd reason). I loved Hypothermia & am loving Jar City now. Also reading a John Sandford which I'm also loving.

Meanwhile, I got distracted from my The Dogs of Riga read which I was also liking (Hypothermia kind of fell into my hands but only for a few days so that's why I read it) but I am so mesmerized by Erlandur I can't stay away from him!

Goodness I admire your ability to read so much at the same time. I am facing having two books on the go simply because I will not read my iPad/iPhone in the tub and finding it a challenge.

Actually, my favorite book of Arnaldur's is his second book, Voices.
