Katherine | 16 comments Amy wrote, If you were being interviewed or were reading/listening to an interview, what questions would you like to be asked?

My favorite question from an interview was, "How has your life's journey contributed to your writing process?" It made me think about my life and my writing on a very deep level.

I also liked being asked about writing groups -- whether they are helpful or hurtful -- because they can be a great support in a writer's life, or they can knock a writer's self-esteem way down, depending on the group.

Gotta hand it to Tom, women still throw underwear at him.

The only time a woman threw underwear at me, it was mine.

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Re ipod songs, we went home and Young Relative said her computer was broken and could we suggest how to put some songs from CD onto her ipod so in a fit of helpfulness we put them on our laptop to our ipod and the intention was to transfer them from our ipod to her computer.

Alas it worked a little TOO well...and we spammed her with 256 assorted songs from Tom Jones and Rolf Harris to the ones from the kids' playlist for Other Young(er) Relatives....A Little Mous With Clogs On / Ernie, The Fastest Milkman In the West etc etc etc.

Somewhat dischuffed, she deleted them from her iTunes. Then she plugged her ipod back in and it downloaded them all from her ipod again. So she deleted them all from her ipod and it downloaded them back from iTunes again. About the fourth time it re-spammed her, I was ejected from the room because I was laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe and it wasn't helping her any....

Eventually she managed to get rid of them all (apart from one of the Rolf Harrises, bizarrely) but had her own revenge when the thrash metal she'd requested kept replicating itself on our ipod.

There we'd be, driving along listening to some chillsome blues or classical or the 70s playlist or something and suddenly there'd be a screeching screaming bashing sound like a lorryload of kettledrums falling on a bagpipe-playing cat, and once we'd managed to control the involuntary swerve we'd be going "But we already deleted that four times....!"

Bill Talcott (billtalcott) | 80 comments I would like to ask or be asked, "Which author, if any, had the most influence over you?" Might seem like a simple question but I have been influenced by authors I have never read. John Grisham, Stephen King. It's the stories of how they got their first novels out to the people that I find compelling.

Generally, you're probably right, Sabine, but lots of readers want to know their favourite author is human, with human foibles, just like them. I doubt Terry Pratchett lost even one reader when it became known he is developing Alzheimer's Disease. The ghouls among us probably look for the symptoms in his latest.

I dunno, but I know I care about the person behind the words and I think other readers do too.

There is a well known author whom I have come to loath. Ok, just short of that. He treats his fans like idiots and his work like a hobby in which he has lost interest. I don't plan on giving him any more of my money.

Then there are Authors like Michael J. Sullivan. His books are very good and he is a likable guy. His wife too. He is an indie who "made it" and I think part of it was because the guy behind the words is real and normal. (PS...indies should read their blogs, they help). I'll buy and read just about anything he puts out because I know it will be good and I know I am not supporting someone I wouldn't like in real life.

Just my thoughts though.

Ooooo, I know who your author nemisis is...

message 75: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Splitter, I'm with you on that. If someone is rude and obnoxious and treats their readers like fools, I certainly don't want to give them my money, indie or trad. Not quite "voting with your feet" (with your wallet, maybe?) but just as I wouldn't want to buy a coffee for someone like that, I don't want to buy a book from them.

I wouldn't give a good book a bad review because I hated the author, because that's not right either; the book is separate from the author. But if I read a fantastic book and then discovered the author was horrible it would put me right off the book so I'd probably get rid.

Which is a bit inconsistent now I come to think of it, but true.

message 76: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (greeneyez2012) I'm with splitter too. I've read some good books but had bad experiences with the authors even some indies!!! So I just don't support them.
I won't talk smack unless someone were to ask me what I thought but I don't buy their work or promote them.
Without readers and fans, they have nothing.

I agree Splitter. In some respects (especially in networking and promoting) you aren't just selling a book you are selling yourself too.
I have had a few bad experiences and I'm with you guys, I stop supporting them. ;)

Does music inspire you and if so, is the playlist for your novel.

You'd get about 1000 words straight off from me about that one...

Oh and on the embarrassing songs... well it might be Yes Sir I Can Boogie by Bacarat or there are several by Neil Diamond - although he's sort of anti cred. Oh and I quite like the Wombles.

I am an avid reader - and I want to know about all of these things because it makes me feel like I know the author a little bit more as a real person. Not just a name on the cover of a book. If I love an author's work, I feel like that book means a little bit more to me if I like the person who made it come to life.

I also love it if the author has a sense of humor - but that may just be me. But anyone who can laugh at him/herself and find something light-hearted to say bumps them up on my "I will buy their next book" list.

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Hey, an idea!

Why interview just the authors? Let's set up a "Meet the Peeps" thread where every week the mods invite a person to do an "about me". They can answer any of the questions on here or anything we ask, and it can be readers, reviewers, editors, regulars, randoms, whoever catches our interest this week!

Suggestions for people to ask can go to the mods and they get final decision (in fact I'm not sure they shouldn't do the initial set of interviews). It can be a couple of people a week - I for one am curious / nosey enough about the rest of you to come back and read them all.

What do you think?

I LOVE this idea and I might steal it for my blog. Great thinking JA!!! You know, this will sound silly but sometimes when I read magazines and see interviews on TV i wonder why its only the celebrities that get interviewed (of course I know why) because people who aren't celebrities (regular people- for lack of a better term) are people too, they have lives and stories to tell, opinions about things. What makes their experiences any less interesting? It doesn't. In fact, they probably have a lot more to offer in an interview than most celebrities....

How about, Who would you most like to go up to and say, 'I wrote a book even though you thought I never would/could.'

That might be an interesting question.

For the record when I am done with the rewrites, if anyone asks me my name and book title I am going to be happy.
