I'd love to try that recipe but Dave is allergic to dairy. He can have sheep and goat cheese though. Can you think of a variety that would work?

That bread looks amazing. It's crying out to be dunked in balsamic and olive oil.

That recipe depends on the cheese really, both for taste and for protein.

Greek feta by law is made only from sheep's milk or sheep and goat milk, so that would do. The one time we had someone to dinner with a no-dairy request, when the Yellow Mountain was served as a vegetable dish in place of plain cauliflower cheese, we made it without the sauce and with a plentiful supply of cubed feta. But you have to cover the dish with foil so that the steam from the veg keeps the feta moist (otherwise it dries out), and that makes it a different dish.

But what you could try is gently heating some olive oil, melting the feta in it, and then pouring it over the made dish, and baking as usual. I've made pasta sauces this way with enough success for people to remember them and ask to have the dish again.

by André Jute

FROM THE STORMING OF THE WINTER PALACE...

In the beginning they were impassioned young revolutionaries risking only own their lives for justice. The prince, the soldier, the peasant and the baroness became the founders of three families, steadfast in love and war, whose generations are enfolded in the sweep of humans and inhumans, inquisitors and victims, the betrayals of friends and family, the show trials of colleagues, the psychiatric tortures of dissidents, that was Russia under the Communists, right up to glasnost, when the fourth generation must answer the question, Was the result worth three generations of tragic suffering and sacrifice?

And the Americans who opposed them for liberty, the patrician Adams family, the refugee Hirches, the redneck Remptons who became political powers in the land, the McQueens who did not count the price of rising from smalltown mid-America to the highest levels of the nation, the Drexlers who had always served their country, the implacable Southern Hubbells who could — and did — threaten Presidents, and the clever Talbots whose shy Joanne married the handsome Russian who was the cleverest traitor of them all.

In his first novel for two decades, a storyteller who has always had a knack with the true history of men and women will touch your heart and thrill your mind with the risks these men and women took with their lives and their families for the ideals they were born to — which some betrayed, and some paid too high a price for in love, even with their lives.

VANGUARD ELITE Book 1 of COLD WAR, HOT PASSIONS by Andre Jute

REVIEW FROM LIBRARYTHING:

The time is 1917; the scene is St Petersburg; the event is the Bolshevik Revolution. Those are the central historical facts forming the beginnings of Andre Jute’s Russian saga. The story begins not with politics but with a character introduction straight out of Russian literature; a peasant and soldier, dislocated, hungry, in the midst of the chaos and abuses of power of a society breaking down. But then Russian history seems to be a state of permanent social breakdown.

For me this was the best part of this story, and recalls Russian literature at its finest. But the entire book was interesting and well worth reading. The Bolshevik Revolution is not a period of history I know much about, or was ever very interested in, to be perfectly honest. Based on what I know of Andre Jute’s work I assume he has portrayed events accurately and fairly represented the policies and personalities of the leaders of the emerging Bolshevik hegemony. At the risk of introducing spoilers, I must say the ineptitude of both sides was a major surprise (some Mexican revolutions were better planned) and in that sense the Bolshevik Revolution prefigures Soviet era society. But I may be guilty of reading more into the story than was intended. The foreshadowing of the coming "Bolshevik Terror" is, I'm sure, deliberate, however.

Dreams #1 was a real pleasure to read, the writing is rock solid and flawless – every word is the right word, in the right place. The only problem I had is that the first volume of this multi-volume saga is too short. The next volume is written and awaiting publication. Bring it on.

Interesting Readingå
"This is more of a critique of Larsson's work then a biography, but it is an interesting book. Jute goes into the story of his family conflict over his estate and the history of how the books came to be published. He delves into the weaknesses of the story and Larsson's writing and apparent unwillingness to edit. I enjoyed the book and I think anyone who has read Larsson's books would find it worthwhile."

A FEAST OF THE IMAGINATION
Carnival of Cryptids: An Anthology of Strange and Mysterious Creatures
Editor: Bernard J. Schaffer
REVIEWED by Andre Jute

A cryptid is an imaginary creature. This is the second volume of short stories in which all the proceeds go to a most worthwhile cause, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. But never mind that you're doing a good deed by buying and reading this book, what are the stories like?

Well, they're what I would call "substantial commuter stories". Substantial because they're not short-shorts, they're pretty meaty in ideas and length. And they're commuter stories because several of them, if you're a nervous type, you'd better not read in bed, but on the train or the bus going to work, when there are guaranteed to be plenty of people around.

As for "meaty", I read the interesting author bios at the back first, and then, since I was there already, and since I know Matt Posner from his YA series School of the Ages about the young Jewish magician, I started with his story "The Paring Knife", which is about a kitchen from hell, a TV show from the boiler room of hell, and a supply of cooking ingredients and condiments from a truly olympian imagination. Posner tells his story as a TV script, which is clever, because it makes his almost universally nasty cooking contest competitors instantly accessible to the reader without in the least stereotyping them. I wish I thought first of the cook who tries to use the contest to poison his detested sister right out in public!

Gone With The Bolsheviks?
Review by Doug Glassford

How do I describe this book... it reads like a literary classic and as a screenplay for a historical documentary miniseries. The language is lush, vibrant even when describing the horrors associated with the Bolshevik Revolution... as with any great nation that suffers the chaos of change brought about by a sudden shift in government. This story follows the lives of three generations of strangers who became fast friends in a decidedly unfriendly environment. Idealists and realists intertwine as things that keep spinning out of balance are justified and vilified in this dense, tense telling of a true historical event; one that helped shape our world into what it is today.

I have not yet completed the final chapters of this amazing narrative. It is difficult to rush through. The imagery through words painted by author Andre Jute makes me feel that I am moving through an art gallery where I wish to study every aspect, explore every color... more than once. I cannot remember when I have read a book of this caliber in recent years. I know that I will enjoy reading this book over and over again throughout the upcoming years and referring back to it's wonderful descriptive use of language imagery to challenge my own writing efforts.

If you enjoy historical fiction that feels like historical fact. If you enjoy immersing yourself into a historical time period or place where you can never physically go. You will enjoy this book. If you are looking for light, quick reading, you might not enjoy this book. It is immediate and had a tunnel vision effect upon me. It might do the same to you, so if you commute be careful; you might miss your bus stop or train stop. Should you wish to read this while on your treadmill, I would suggest caution. You might fall off during a moment of visualization. This novel demands and absorbs a lot of your sensory perception so you should only read it when you have the time and proper place to do so. Even in a coffee shop don't be surprised if your latte goes cold before you've finished the current section or chapter you are reading.

You might think this pure hyperbole, but I assure you as best I can as a faceless reviewer that I am not fluffing this up. I challenge you to prove me wrong.

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments Someone said a few days ago in a post I've now mislaid that sales picked up after he/she/it fine-tuned a book's categories.

But here's a bunch of categories for Andrew's and my Larsson book, some of which I've never heard of, and including a brandnew one, added this week, in the book's fourth year on the bestseller lists, that I've definitely never heard of --
#88 in Books > Literature & Fiction > History & Criticism > Movements & Periods
-- that someone at Amazon must have popped the book into, because none of us did anything. It raises the question of whether you can, or even should, fine-tune your own categories, or just leave it Amazon.

BTW, if you want to read this book (or for that matter any book on the CoolMain Press list), and you write reviews, don't spend your own money. Just drop me a PM and a review copy will be on its way to you.

HENTY'S FIST 1: GAUNTLET RUN: Birth of a Superhero by Andre Jute, Dakota Franklin, Andrew McCoy

The Gauntlet Run is the toughest race ever run by man: across America with every man’s hand turned against you from the statue of Liberty to the old US Mint in San Francisco. There the prize awaits you: $10 million and a full and free Presidential Pardon.

The Runner is marked for all to see by an indestructible Fist, keyed to his metabolism. If the Fist is removed without the key from the Mint in San Francisco, he dies. Between the Runner and the key stand the ruthless bounty hunters, the Syndicate’s lethal odds fixers, the sinister Organ Bank chasers, the Humble & Poor Hunt, the US Air Force, and mobs of good citizens, all turned into bloodthirsty savages by the magnificent prize for tearing the Fist from the Runner — and the Presidential license that nothing done to the Runner shall be illegal.

Henty needs two million dollars to send her son Petey to the Artie stericlinic for treatment that will save his life. The care of The Caring Society is exhausted, her chicken farm already carries a second mortgage. Hopeless. But beautiful young Texas widows don’t just give up. There is still the Gauntlet Run. To qualify, you have to be a criminal — so Henty robs a bank...
No woman has ever Run the Gauntlet. No Runner has ever survived the Gauntlet.

DERRING-DO

the epic saga of ten intertwined Russian and American families who live and die by their love of liberty and the searing passions their fight for freedom arouses in war and peace.

THE GREATEST
SECRET INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN
BEGAN AS ONE MAN’S DREAM

There was David, the Boston patriarch, comrade of “Wild Bill” Donovan and father of the intelligence mandarin Joshua. And Joshua’s friends. The roistering, confessing Richard, the last soldier-priest. Joe-Bob from the Louisiana swamps, who saw the power of politics, an artist with a knife. Hillel, the penniless Jewish refugee from Germany, equally handy with a pistol or a computer. Harvey McQueen, the permanent outsider, the greatest spy of all time, who exposed Kim Philby and dug the Berlin Tunnel into the heart of Russia’s darkest secrets.

And their women. Virginia, the senator’s daughter. Nicole the Resistance fighter. Giselda the German spy. Jen whom the pressure turned into a lush. Belinda the brain. Fiona the faithful.

There were two cars. One took away their jumpsuits and parachutes. They climbed into the other car. David sat beside the driver, a woman. He leaned over the back of his seat. ‘The Contessa de Grubelli drove racing cars before the war but I hope her skill will not be called upon tonight. I asked General Donovan to send me his very best men.’

‘To do what?’ Hillel asked.

‘To take over a country.’

‘It had better be a small country, sir,’ Richard said. ‘There are only three of us.’

‘It is only a small country.’

‘Then between us and the sea we got them surrounded,’ the irrepressible Joe-Bob laughed.

Self-instruction in property defencse for writers
by Andre Jute

Piracy abounds. For instance, on ScribD, I found the slimy thief ramon1325 who without anyone's permission posted Escribir un Thriller, the Spanish edition of my Writing a Thriller. The legitimate translation into Spanish is the edition by the arts publisher Paidos which is available in trade paperback at all good bookstores in Spain and at the Spanish stores of international internet operators like Amazon, Barnes & Noble etc.

Escribir un Thriller Andre Jute

It seems to me the owners of ScribD are just as much slimy thieves for encouraging piracy with their three-strikes policy. If they were serious about wiping out piracy, they would chuck proven thieves off immediately, not give them two more chances to be caught stealing, and put in place measures under which posters have to prove under pain of penalties that they own the copyright of material they post.

It is a provocative insult to make the owner of the copyright swear on pain of perjury to some grubby merchant that he owns his own property before the grubby merchant stops profiting from selling what he doesn't own.

In general, while better than nothing, I think the DMCA notice system is a limp and cumbersome makeshift for protecting intellectual property. It is symptomatic of the low esteem in which creators are held that such a stupidly misdirected remedy could be put in place by legislators trying not to offend commercial interests. People who steal the money of corporations are prosecuted by the justice system; why should people who steal the money of writers not be prosecuted the same way? These thefts should not be left to the perpetrators and facilitators like ScribD to put straight, but should be reported to the police and routinely handled by them like every other property crime, with the criminals, both the thieves and the fences like Scribd, on conviction jailed. A few months on a Georgia chain gang will soon straighten out these soft Californian miscreants.

There should be something similar to the Lousiana Defense (which lets you off for horsewhipping someone who insults a lady) in the arts, under which writers are let off for breaking the knees of scum who steal from them.

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments A guest article you really want to read
because it could put money in your pocket
by hooking your writing into the collective unconscious.
Yah, I know, it sounds like mumbo jumbo,
but it's impeccable science.

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments Quite a few new entries on my  blog , among them a review by Matt Posner of J. A. Beard's innovative Mind Crafter, and a review by James Everington of Jeff VanderMeer's Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction. Also an entry where you can click through to get free books by a whole bunch of best-seller authors at Cookie's Book Club Annual Christmas Giveaway. Sue McLarty, who runs this bonanza for readers and writers must be very popular, judging by the quality of writers she attracts. Enjoy.

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments In the dogsledding regions like Canada and Alaska, IDITAROD a novel of The Greatest Race on Earth is pretty much a year-round staple of the bestseller lists and has been since it was first published in 1990. But the interesting thing is that each year in October, IDITAROD a novel of The Greatest Race on Earth starts climbing the bestseller lists outside the ice regions. This is because the intensely loyal fans of the eponymous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race get involved in the buildup towards the race.

Standings in the last day of 2013 for
IDITAROD a novel of The Greatest Race on Earth:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: US Top 100 Paid
#69 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Nonfiction > Sports > Winter Sports

Amazon Bestsellers Rank: UK Top 100 Paid
#43 in Kindle Store > Books > Nonfiction > Sport > Winter Sports

And elsewhere, of course, but there are now too many Amazon outlets to check them all. Also in paperback on Amazon.

COLD WAR, HOT PASSIONS
OMNIBUS ONE by André Jute

the epic saga of ten intertwined Russian and American families who live and die by their love of liberty and the searing passions their fight for freedom arouses in war and peace.

“Wild but exciting. A grand job with plenty of irony.”
New York Times

“Jute has clearly conducted a great deal of research into everything he describes, investing the novel with an air of prophecy. His moral concerns are important.”
Times Literary Supplement

THE GREATEST CONSPIRACY THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN STARTED WITH THE STORMING OF THE WINTER PALACE

In the beginning they were impassioned young revolutionaries risking only their own lives for justice. The prince, the soldier, and the peasant became the patriarchs of three families whose generations are enfolded in the sweep of humans and inhumans, inquisitors and victims, that tells the story of the KGB — which is the story of Russia in the Twentieth Century — from the day Lenin created it as the Cheka in the Smolny Convent: the Extraordinary Commission from the beginning and from the inside, motivated by its own imperatives of fear and fanaticism, through the murders of whole classes, the massacres of kulaks, the betrayals of friends and family, the show trials of colleagues, the psychiatric tortures of dissidents, right up to glasnost, when the fourth generation must answer the question, Was the result worth three generations of suffering and sacrifice?

While on the other side of the world a slumbering giant awoke slowly to a threat, not of a Russian bear stirring, but of German tanks rumbling…

THE GREATEST SECRET INTELLIGENCE AGENCY THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN BEGAN AS ONE MAN’S DREAM

And there was Hubbell, who saw the final truth. He knew it was greater than power could ever be—and gladly risked the world for it.
