Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments Couldn't find the active recipe thread, so I'll post it here. There's no obligation to buy one of my books just because you like my recipe!

ANDRE'S VEGETARIAN LASAGNA, PLAIN SPINACH EDITION

This takes a standard white sauce, if your standard white sauce is made with grated nutmeg and English mustard.

The lasagne sheets I like are the corrugated ones; ours are usually the Roma brand.

All the other ingredients are uncooked, or pre cooked in the tin.

Opens enough tins of finely chopped spinach to feed everyone you expect. Slice a large onion per every four people thinly. Open a tin of cooked, peeled, tomatoes to any size chop you like; you can get some with herbs or garlic added and when I find those in the cupboard I always use them. Open a small tin of tomato puree for extra taste, or squeeze in a whole tube of puree. Chop or crunch a vegetable stock cube; don't add salt on top it. Crush a very large clove of garlic or two smaller per every four diners (yes, even if there is already garlic in the chopped tomato). Throw in some chopped fresh basil if you have it, or herbes de Provence from a bottle if you don't. Mix all these ingredients, together with a glass of the wine you will serve with the food, in a glass bowl. If you're smart and trendy and not very strong-willed, white wine will be expected. If you just want good taste, use a robust red; I like South Australian Shiraz for this, but then I like the South Australian Shiraz for everything, including just drinking.

To prepare the lasagne dish, pour in a teaspoon or two of olive oil and a few drops of chili oil. They'll mix on the piece of kitchen roll you use to wipe the dish thoroughly.

Grate two ounces of mature cheddar per diner. Slice a large tomato into flat slices.

Layer sauce, lasagna and the filling mix several times in the lasagne dish. When you get near the top, lay out an artistic arrangement of tomato slices. Sprinkle liberally with cheese and then with a good thick shake of paprika.

Baking instructions are on the lasagne packet. I bake mine in a fan-oven for about thirty minutes at 190 degrees, which is a bit hotter and shorter than advised by Roma or most recipe books: it keeps my lasagne al dente rather than soggy, and browns and crisps the top. I like a bit of crunch even in soft dishes.

Serve with a small salad. (Small because it will be wasted. People, having discovered how unexpectedly great a spinach lasagne tastes, will clear the dish for seconds and thirds, and be too full to eat the salad. But it looks mean not to put the salad on the table. And it's good for you, right?) Don't serve with bread; it's barbaric to serve pasta with bread.

PS I stole this recipe from my pedal pal Helen about twenty years ago. Recently she heard me expound on it, and thanked me for giving it to her! The wicked will surely inherit the earth, or at least all the good recipes!

I hated to love this book about Millennium!

"I just finished the ebook-version of André Jute’s Stieg Larsson: Man, Myth & Mistress and if you only read one book about the Millennium-series, I strongly recommend this. Not because it worships Larsson in all his glory, but quite the opposite: It is probably the single most critical book I’ve ever read about Larsson, Millennium, Salander and the whole hoola-baloola around the phenomenon that Millennium has become. But it is so d*mn informative and entertaining, so give yourself permission. Hey, it’s only three bucks!"

Hate it or love it - but do read it
By Christopher Marcus

STIEG LARSSON Man, Myth & Mistress (Kindle Edition)
As a longtime webmaster of a Stieg Larsson fan site, sallysfriends, I thought I would really loathe a book that tore apart pretty much everything about the Millennium Trilogy - and the positive stories about Larsson and Eva Gabrielsson in the media. But aside from being a thoroughly entertaining and informative read (rant), I do suspect that the author - Jute - wants to like the books. Otherwise, why waste time lamenting Larsson's "errors" in terms of writing, trying to come up with alternatives, and - most importantly - wasting time writing this book at all? If you think Larsson was a saint and the Millennium stories are perfect, you will probably see red reading this analysis/review.

If you - like me - enjoyed the books to no end, but were aware of (and not seldom annoyed by) their chaotic structure, dead-end subplots (like Berger when goes to the daily) and perhaps a little concerned with the, er, morally incongruent uses of sex and violence in the story, well ... then you'll get something out of this.

After all, if you loved the stories, and especially Lisbeth Salander, as much as I did, you won't begin hating them after reading this. You'll just come away with a fuller understanding of how they came to be, and how they can be read. I'm pretty amazed at Jute's accomplishment in this regard, he even rips apart Salander, one of my fav all-time fictional characters, and still I was both intrigued, educated and entertained while reading. No mean feat.

Read it - the ebook version is priced properly in this day and age, and you will get your money's worth.

What did you two innocents expect? Stieg Larsson is probably the best loved writer, by the unsophisticated, that the world has ever seen, and you two tore him apart as if you were dealing with high literature. I'm surprised they don't assault you in the street.

Fabulous review, though. But your brinkmanship will one day be the end of you.

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments "Stunningly Intricate and Fascinating Tale of Adventure"

An extract from the
5-star review by Matt Posner "The Dean" of
IDITAROD a novel of The Greatest Race on Earth
$2.99/€1.91/€2.60

I bought this book to read for pleasure because I am already a fan of Andre Jute, as an author and as a human being. I'm very glad I did, as it was thrilling. Andre's deep research led to a stunningly intricate and fascinating tale of adventure with two appealing and admirable young protagonists. I really liked both Rhodes Delaney and James Whitbury, a woman and man with courage and integrity, ingenuity and athleticism, who are racing each other in the Iditarod as a way to resist their nigh-irresistable attraction to each other, an attraction that is fed by rivalry and danger in the greatest race on earth.

I was not initially convinced that the Iditarod would provide steady interest as the subject of a book. I didn't think there would be enough variety in the situations it presented to a reader. I changed my mind right away when the race began with a lively series of problems and challenges for the young people. There is not one possible threat they do not face and overcome, in an atmosphere so authentic that I can't help wondering if Andre took part in the race some time under a pseudonym and doesn't want to tell us...

The best praise I can offer this book is to compare Rhodes and James and their dogs Toots, Delilah, and General to beloved characters from my childhood in the 1970's: Alec and the Black, from Walter Farley's Black Stallion series. Those books, showing the union of a young person and a working animal through love and respect, defined a genre. Iditarod might be the best book of its kind since.

Thanks for a great read, Andre.

I can just about remember the Berlin Wall falling. We lived in Europe a lot through my childhood years, and I can honestly say I didn't know it was that bad.

message 132: by Andre Jute (new)

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments It wasn't bad at all where you were living. I drove through Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro before the deep doo-doo hit the fan there. Some of the most striking scenery in the world, but you couldn't tell that centuries-old resentments simmered unless you had a really good grasp of rather esoteric history, and the few people who knew, unless they were ivory tower specialists at the better universities, like me got their information from the essayist Hubert Butler who passed through there in -- wait for it -- the 1920s. Sixty years later Butler was proved precisely right in his forecasts.

The real Count Dracul lived in those parts, and his Elissabetta, fearing that he'd been killed because he was late home from work (like most rulers around there he was a brigand and a soldier), killed herself, but he was just working overtime impaling live Turkish invaders in their thousands beside the roads. Be interesting to know where Bram Stoker got the story. I got it from Butler when on my arrival in Ireland I made pilgrimage to pay homage.

It's that history which burst like a boil once the heavy ordering hand of Josef Broz Tito was lifted from these disparate little states.

But, as I say, only a tiny minority of scholars and literati knew it would happen sooner or later, and the State Department and the Foreign Office clearly didn't know anything, but at this late date that should hardly surprise anyone.

So no, I'm not surprised that a teenager in Cologne or Munich or Paris or Turin didn't know that reading English books invited torture in Prague.

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments If you're talking about the orange cake with the plum, I should imagine so. Any of the North African restaurants will probably serve a more authentic version than I ate, if your calorie allowance can take the sugar. Many of the good hotels and restaurants will probably have a westernized version, like the one I'm showing, on the menu.

You can probably make a fair approach yourself by soaking sliced sponge cake in freshly squeezed, strained orange juice, and serving with a plum poached and left to cool, with the juice reduced and served over it. The juice has as much sugar in it as you like, and, especially if you reduce the sugar, add a clove or some other spice. The authentic thing is sticky sweet, the one I had at Isaac's had a nice tang.

If you mean my prawns, try one of the Mexican or anyway South American restaurants; that sauce is just a cooked mild salsa. A good approximation in any French restaurant would be prawns on the tail with the sauce Americaine -- in Nice at least, elsewhere armoricaine -- that they probably have on the stove already to serve with lobster.

The sea bass you can get in any fish restaurant when it is in the catch; I can't now remember whether it is caught in the Med or only in the icier waters of the North Atlantic, but there's bound to be an acceptable substitute.

Here's the rest of the menu

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments REVIEW
*****
5.0 out of 5 stars
One of the best thrillers I will read this year
By Matthew Posner

EIGHT DAYS IN WASHINGTON by Andre Jute is a revenge thriller that pits an on-the-outs FBI agent against a revengeful female killer. The crimes fits the crimes, as it were, with each of the mostly politically connected victims murdered creatively according to his own wickedness and perversion. These murders are striking and awful to contemplate, but they are, in every case, richly deserved. All the same, I couldn't help relating to the viewpoint character, FBI agent Denny Cartwright, who, despite great skill and strong political connections, has been "on the bicycle," i.e. being transferred from one undesirable posting to another by his FBI superiors in order to humble him. Denny is a very human protagonist, skilled but flawed, more realistic than some thriller protagonists in terms of vulnerability.

Supporting Denny is a cast of hard-nosed fellow agents and supervisors, slimy Washington insiders, stupid police, many muddleheaded civilians, and one charming Italian fashion designer, Gelica, who gives the book a sympathetic humanity to contrast with the awful violence inflicted upon the deserving victims.

Although it has the feel of a police procedural all throughout, Eight Days in Washington is not without touches of Andre Jute's characteristic depth and tough-minded view of the world.

I'm sure this is one of the best-written thrillers I will read this year. Andre Jute is a writer I trust to give me a good book every time.

Andre Jute (andrejute) | 281 comments Allan Regier's review of THE TIME-LIFE CONSPIRACY on LibraryThing and Goodreads:

"...a fascinating story about background influence and political intrigue at the pivot point in history when television drastically altered campaigning and politics. Those changes are still in force 60 years and 14 elections later."

Though its power is waning, television's influences on mainstream culture is platitudinous. Rarely do we ask how it came to be the most powerful medium, and when. Andre Jute answers those questions in The Time-Life Conspiracy. The transition from print occurred earlier than I thought. The events in the story took place in 1952, about the same time as television became the most popular deliverer of the daily news. The story focuses on the schemes of Henry Luce, the co-founder of Time magazine and the most influential publisher of his day, to end the long drought of the Republican Party. It is Luce who determines Eisenhower can win the election, and helps persuade him to seek the presidential nomination for the Republican Party and orchestrates a television campaign to win the primary.

Revealing the barest plot summary shouldn’t hinder anyone from enjoying the novella. It is a fascinating story about background influence and political intrigue at the pivot point in history when television drastically altered campaigning and politics. Those changes are still in force 60 years and 14 elections later.

The novella was a bit hard to follow at times due to the number of characters in it, but that’s politics and can't be avoided. I was intrigued by the self-critical views of television people regarding soundbites, images and lack of in-depth reportage. I applaud their honesty and wish the visionary marketers of the internet were half as honest.

I read the novella An Election of Patriots, and quickly scanned through the screen and radio plays in The Time-Life Conspiracy omnibus. The author wanted to tell the story in the characters own recorded words, so the plays were good forms to achieve his objective. In the novella Jute uses dialogue very effectively to characterize the players and present historical events.

An Election of Patriots was an entertaining tale and I learned something; that makes it story worth adding to my bookshelf.

YELLOW (BLUE) MOUNTAIN:
A CAULIFLOWER, TOMATO AND MUSHROOM BAKE

Cut a cauliflower into florets. Quarter tomatoes. Or you can use cocktail tomatoes whole. Slice button mushrooms into halves or if small leave whole. Mixed small mushrooms in a bottle from Italy are also good; I don't name the particular ones we have used because there are any number of varieties available -- look on a shelf near the pesto. (No pesto where you shop? Why do you even bother going there?) Grate mature cheddar, or crumble blue cheese.

Next, ascertain the personal tastes of the diners. Some want their cauliflower steamed soft, some want it cooked al dente, some just want it steamed a tiny bit before it goes into the oven, I prefer it to go into the oven raw as I like the crunch. Steam accordingly accordingly.

The tomatoes and mushrooms go into the dishes raw.

Arrange the vegetables in individual dishes. Remember, this is an entire course, or an entire meal, so you need large ovenproof bowls.

Sprinkle with herbs. I like basil for this; it goes with the tomato and fights everything else. Great. Oregano is also good, and a better alternative for those who complain that basil tastes "medicinal".

Make a runny cheese sauce. This can be cheddar or, for a sharper taste, blue cheese sauce. Or you can make the sauce cheddar and just sprinkle a few nuggets of blue cheese across the top of the made dish for an interesting appearance and a bit of a sharper taste here and there.

Pour the cheese sauce over your individual dishes. Sprinkle (optionally) with crumbled blue cheese. Dust generously with ground paprika.

Bake at about a 190 degrees Celsius (fan oven setting) only until the top is browned. Serve in the bowl straight from the oven. Warn people the bowls are hot. We have wooden platters to distance people's fingers from hot bowls from the oven.

Got the dough from a local bakery, added chopped sundried tomato and olive oil and a few flecks of basil, used a knife to make paving bricks, baked it. Tastes good.
