In the quest to save a soul, clerics look for solutions to mysteries, if only to get the person to come to terms with their sins.

Ellis Peters pseudonym of Edith Pargeter in A Morbid Taste for Bones presents us with Brother Cadfael, who has given up a rousing secular life as a soldier and sailor for a quiet spiritual one as a Benedictine monk. Yet in these historically faithful stories, he always finds trouble with the medieval feudal system or his monastic brethren and the townsfolk.
