I've heard that comparison made a lot between McCarthy and Faulkner, and I am a big fan of both, but I just can't see it! I see more in common with Hemingway and McCarthy than Faulkner? What are the similarities supposed to be?
I'm a late entrant to this discussion, but sometimes "better late than never." I can see it in subject matter---the every day (or mundane) is depicted in an almost epic way. Juveniles slipping over the border is depicted as (rightfully, I'd add) something as grand as Homer's "The Odyssey," or Tolkien's "LOTR." Ok that's hyperbole, but you get what I'm saying! In that sense I can see him as a literary heir to Faulkner (as well as an heir to the terse prose of Hemingway).
But I also see similarities in subject matter with plenty of other writers, from Flannery O'Connor to Leslie Marmon Silko (but key and important divergences as well).
