Silver I have been throwing around ideas in my head about the possibility of mixing things up with how nominations are done a bit. Though we can still have open nominations in which members may nominate any book of their choice I have been thinking of now and than doing something a little different.

For example I have been considering the possibility of maybe once month select a particular theme, or a specific country, or choose a more specific time period within the groups bracket, select a specific author.

Also I know someone mentioned in our last nomination period the idea of nominating books from the to-read bookshelf of this group, so I thought maybe once I could take those books and put them in a random generator and than just have people vote on the selection chosen.

I just thought it would be fun and perhaps also open the range to our reading experiences if now and than we did things a little different.

I would like to here any feedback and thoughts you may have on the idea of adding more variety and making some changes to how nominations are done, or if anyone has thier own ideas or suggestions.

MadgeUK | 5213 comments I don't care what changes are made to the nomination procedure, I would just like those who nominate and vote to take part in the discussions!

I am no longer going to use my pension to buy a book in anticipation of a read after the poll has closed, I am going to wait to see how many voters actually turn up for the discussion.

Sasha I like that idea, Silver. I think that sort of narrowing down perks people up sometimes and leads to some interesting places.

Ellen (karenvirginiaflaxman) | 220 comments Silver, you have some great ideas here. I think I was the person who suggested that we look at the to-read shelf when looking for books to nominate, and I think that would be a good idea - I mean, what's the point of having the to-read shelf if we don't consult it? I believe all group members can place books in that shelf, right? You could definitely use a random-number generator to choose a bunch to show up in the polls.

I also like your idea of choosing a theme or a time period on which to focus our selections. Excellent idea.

Thanks for coming up with these good ideas, Silver. I'm looking forward to seeing what others have to say and whether the nomination process changes in the future.

Will Bill Silver, I really like the idea of choosing a theme or time period, then polling for a discussions book. I think it will focus the discussion and open readers to paralleling the discussion with outside books. It also reminds me of the structure of my college English classes.

Kristen | 142 comments i like the idea of using the bookshelf and a random number generator as well. it seems to work well in another group i'm in.

Kim (kimmr) | 317 comments I also like the idea of choosing by theme, country or time period. It might also be a good idea to have a preferential voting system rather than a "first past the post" one, so that readers have had the chance to vote for more than one book in the first part of the poll. Maybe the vote could be narrowed down to three books, say, which would increase the chance of something everyone is prepared to read being the chosen book.

(I'm not sure that I'm explaining myself very well and I accept that it would make the voting process more complicated. But it might lead to greater participation than the current system.)

MjerrieT | 5 comments I haven't had time to post with the group nor vote, been busy with extra work. However, I have been following the groups threads and getting some very good books to read.
Everything mentioned are excellent ideas which is why I like following this group.
