Paul Perry (pezski) | 122 comments Utterly appalling. Hopefully the ubiquity of media now available will help stamp out this sort of barbarism - but only if other countries governments and citizens condemn it.

MadgeUK Absolutely barbaric and medieval:(:(. It is to be hoped that our governments protested about this on behalf of gay people everywhere.

Mahatma Gandhi, when asked what he thought of Western civilization
Indian political and spiritual leader (1869 - 1948)

I wonder if Iran will ever be a part of civilisation?

MadgeUK It is sad isn't it, as Persia was once part of an early civilisation with great art and literature and enlightened ideas for the time.

(I think Ghandi was an itsy-bit prejudiced, being a Hindu:))

From what I understand, there are a lot of people in Iran (youth in particular, as in many Middle Eastern countries) who crave democracy and liberty. However, with spies and "morality police" everywhere, it's extremely difficult for them to form a movement. I think that it's inevitable that where there is a desire for it there will someday be positive change, but before or after a terrible war is a tough call.

MadgeUK I think it will happen as new ideas sweep across the Arab world and as they are disseminated through TV, satellite and the internet. One of the obstacles is that the Iranians are Shias and the other Arab countries are predominantly Sunni. They are rather like Russians during the Ages of Reason/Enlightenment, when the Russian Orthodox church held sway and held them back.
