For those of you who don't know what stone = in lbs:
16 = 224 lb. and 12 = 168 lbs.
Now, this seems to me that there is more than what is being written. If no guidelines were provided for the diet and if the parents have "lower parenting skills" then shouldn't the family been given instructions on what was expected of them? It seems to me that this was a set up to doom them to fail.
What I would like to know is who decided that these people were wrong? Did someone else turn them in for abuse and this was discovered? I agree that children are becoming larger than they should at their size and ages, and while I am in support of the rights of large people, this is a hard one. Taking away someones kids because they don't feed them or are abusing them is one thing, but this is a fine line. Is it abuse to have a 12 year old weigh 168 lbs. or is it more medical than that?
When I was a teenager, it was suspected that I may have a thyroid problem, but the doctors were reluctant to prescribe any medications that would have helped me due to the fact that I was still "hormonal and unsettled" due to my age. So I was a 200+lb. teenager and was told to diet and exercise. As an adult with no insurance, no one would run the tests to see if I did indeed have a problem. Not until about 7 years ago when I found a sliding scale clinic did anyone bother to test me and find the hyperthyroidism that I do have and am being treated for now. It took me until my 30's and 300+lb.s before somebody decided that maybe I wasn't too lazy to help myself.
If more kids were tested for this sooner and got treatment, along with healthy foods and moderate exercise, we would be able to head the problem off at the pass. Not all fat kids are fat because they eat too much or have parents who don't pay attention. If the families can't afford the health care or the good food, that is a problem for all of us. If they refuse to give the child good food or care,that is abuse and we should take the kids away.

I found this today on Yahoo!Shine. I am so angry, I'm shaking. Watch the video from ABC news that is part of the story to get the full impact.

I am so angry, it's not funny. While I agree that we do need to be healthy, this is beyond outrageous. Since in your face campaigns have worked in the past, this group, and I really hate to give them any space here, so I will refer to them only as "the jerks", claim that they are trying to get the state of Georgia to wake up. I am not saying that 40% of the states child population being overweight or obese is not a problem or that 1st and 2nd graders being diagnosed with hypertension is a good thing, but I can and do protest their methods.
On a whole, our country does need to be healthier. I don't deny that. What I am having a royal problem with, is the premise that fat = unhealthy, every single time. This is getting out of hand, and when you have PDA's and what not screaming this,what is wrong with us as a nation? People come in all shapes and sizes, and yes,that means *gasp* fat people will be among them.
What criteria are they using to diagnose children now? When I was a teen,it was suspected that my thyroid may be out of whack (it was for many years) but because I was a teen, they did not want to give me any pills until they were sure. By the time I was an adult, I had no insurance, so I went untreated until about 7 years ago,when I got into the no/low cost clinic that I am with now. So, under the apparent new rules of diagnosis, we will give kids pills for high blood pressure and cholesterol, but there is no mention of thyroid conditions........
I think we are so pill happy in this country that we are not seeing the bigger picture here. It starts with "think of the children" and mushrooms into "a war on...."
Again, when did people become a war?
