Rebekah I really would like to read I Am Number Four and the next book, The Power of Six, both by Pittacus Lore, but I have a ban on all incomplete series. I'm not patient enough and do not have a good enough memory to read things bit by bit. But I have been told that they can be read as stand-alone books, and that it would be ok for me to read them now. Thoughts?

rose I don't think there stand alone AT ALL! I immediately wanted to know more the minute I finished the book.

Lilly Povey Well, you are on Goodreads, and the purpose of this website is to keep track of what you read. As for being patient, you don't always have a choice. I usually check back to my read books to see what I've missed. You could also make a shelf that says "Unfinished Series" and write a summary of the book to help you remember what it's about.

rameau I have the first one on my list, but I haven't exactly been in a hurry to read it. Not because of the unfinished series issue, but because of the general quality implications.

This reply...well, it would have been nice if her question had been answered. There are a lot of nuances in a book that a synopsis/summary won't always help you remember. If you know enough about yourself to know you won't remember enough by the time the next installment comes out, why not wait? As for patience she does, obviously, have a choice - not reading an incomplete series as she said. That was the entire point of the question.

Sorry, rebekah, I haven't read this. I was trying to decide if it was worth it and I just never garnered enough interest in it to overcome the fact it's YA.

But whether or not you wanted more after it was done, was each book complete in and of itself?

See, almost everyone I know said the first one was much better than they expected it to be. I don't think I know anyone who didn't like it, even those who dislike alien-related things. This gives me a lot more confidence.

That's ok, Alicia. But jsyk, everyone I know who's read it liked it much better than they expected it to. Food for thought.

Andrew Hildreth I got IANF as a gift shortly before the movie released in theaters. I wanted to read it before I saw the movie, and like many others I enjoyed the book more than I expected.

When I finished IANF, I immediately pre-ordered TPoS and (patiently) waited for 6 months before I got it in my hands. I enjoyed the second book more than the first!

If you're wanting to wait until this becomes a complete series, I'm afraid you could be waiting a very long time. I'm sure we won't even hear about getting book 3 until next year. And who's to say this series couldn't go more than 3 installments.

In my opinion, they would be kind of okay as stand-alone books, but you could tell something was missing. Where they each leave off are decent ending points for a book. You are certainly left wanting more.

For me, I'd rather get what I could of it now and just wait until the next one comes out. At least I got something. Besides, I have plenty on my reading list to keep me "occupied" until my next Pittacus Lore fix.

It probably just boils down to how well--or not well--you are willing to wait. You are missing out on some great reads though, in my opinion.

Good luck!

Rhea They are def not stand along books they are all going to be connected and there is alot of things in power of six alone that would not be understood if you havn't read or even watched i am number four and i've just finished power of six and i'm not going to lie i want that next book like Now and it's going to be a pain in the ass to wait for it to come out heck i don't even think it's written yet

M. I thought I am number four as a book was a disappointment. The characters were insipid, the writing style childish at best. The movie was way better.

Anachronist I quite agree with Michelle - "I Am Number Four" is, imho, a horribly written and generally very schematic novel. If you want to read my very nasty review here is the link:

Laurie Jameson I disagree with Michelle and Anachronist. I thoroughly enjoyed "I Am Number Four" and am currently reading "The Power of Six." While true that these are not "Deep" novels, they are pure Scifi enjoyment. It is frustrating to begin a series and have to wait for the sequels, but what I do is reread the previous book before starting the next in a series. This allows me to refresh my memory and really doesn't take long, because I usually remember the major points and can kind of skim through.

These can be stand alone books, but you will want the story to continue after "I Am Number Four." Can't say yet about "The Power of Six" because I am not finished yet, but I suspect it will be the same and leave me wanting more.

Don't let the negative folks here scare you off. Read it for yourself...if you don't like it, you don't like it...but you may Love it! :)

M. I agree that people have to read the books for themselves, but I would recommend getting it from the library or borrowing it from a friend. When the reviews are mixed, it's usually the safest approach. I wish I had paid more attention to the reviews before I bought it. I really dislike spending money on books that are mediocre(in my opinion, of course).

hunger games and K POP LAVA!!!! i loved the book and it is a good book to read wen i have spare time on my hands i read even if i dont want to because i borrow books from the library and people want it to so i gotta read quick

message 16: by Anachronist (new)

Anachronist I would never ever say: don't read this book. I am not trying to scare anybody off. I would even suggest: do read it. Just be aware that some people out there simply hate it and they can give you their reasons. It is my right to hate a book I personally consider to be horribly written.

Well not really, I thought each one was kind of a cliff hanger.

Like you, I also have a ton of books I can read while waiting for installments. I'm still deciding, but I'm leaning toward just reading them. Thank you for your thoughtful input!

I'm probably going to end up reading them. Not right this second, though.

I do the same thing, where I reread the previous books before a new one comes out, but sometimes the books aren't that good and I feel like it's such a waste of time rereading them, but it's got to be done because I barely remember anything. That's the main reason I've stopped reading series. Well, that and the frustration comes with waiting. Thanks for your help!

Thank you. If I do read it, I will definitely check out the movie after.

Rebecca THIS IS ONLY FOR IAN4 because I have yet to read TPO6. The writing isn't great and the plot may have some issues (although I personally enjoyed it when I hear some of the arguments for the "hate it" side I can see their points). But I still liked it I mean I didn't expect to have my mind blown so I wasn't disappointed. I wanted an action book that would be a fast read and this was it. The ending lets the reader know there is more to come but it isn't a complete cliffhanger (like the main character or one of his friends is in a life or death situation- that's not how it ends it has an ending but the book itself is also a beginning) I hope this was helpful... It looks like you are going to read them and I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you :) I'm not expecting much, just to be entertained and not hate it.

message 26: by AlbertaJenn (new)

AlbertaJenn I would say don't read it for a totally different reason: James Frey treats his ghost writers like crap! They get no recognition and no pay, and he gets everything!

Google "I am Number Four controversy" before you pick up these books. It is an eye opener, and turns my stomache just thinking about how slimy this guy is.

message 27: by Anachronist (new)

Anachronist AlbertaJenn - I found out about that particular issue only after reading I Am Number Four. I was appalled by it as well.

Kimberly No way. I'm glad I read I Am Number four, because it filled in a lot of "huh?" moments for me from the movie, but I wish I had just stopped there and waited for the entire series to be written.
