Susan, make the bookcases white and this looks exactly like my library, LOL. Then you need to add some stacked up cardboard boxes (filled with books, of course), and several more knee to waist-high stacks scattered throughout the rest of my apartment -- perfect! Oh, and mine are all unread, too -- the read ones are all in storage!

Thanks Lea. I figured I'd never be rich enough to live in a big mansion, but I could teach myself the skills to make my house look like one.

How can you put your poor books in boxes? (And if you come with the excuse because you need room for your kid/soulmate/pet: Just put those in the boxes!)

LOL, I'll have to threaten them with that next time they tease me about my book overflow! The worst is when I desperately NEED a particular book and have no idea which box it's in -- pretty much eliminate re-reading for me, at least until I move and have more shelf space. And yes, room for bookcases will be the deciding factor in my next home purchase!

Oh my gosh, I don't think I'm that brave! I might have a picture my husband took when I was cleaning/rearranging the books by my side of the bed -- it's also embarrassing, but what the heck!

Okay, Susan -- my daughter requests an estimate of how many books you own. I have to admit, I'm curious too!

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) This is part of my main library:

Part of my library - reading chair

Part of my library - book cases & Part of my library - book cases

I have floor to roof book cases covering two main walls and a half bookcase next to my reading chair which also holds a small stereo system so I can listen to music while reading and enjoying a nice glass of red wine.

How in the world do you get your books on the floor to stack so evenly??

Susan Rick, wow, even me with over 2000+ unread books is totally jealous!! :) I could get lost in your shelves! :)

Okay the last time I kind of counted was when I moved last December. I was close to 2065, give or take a few. Um, but now, I've added a bunch since then. Maybe another hundred or so...so maybe 2200??? :)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Glad you like my library, I've enjoyed everyone else's picture’s here as well. It’s nice isn't it to be able to go somewhere and be surrounded by your books and where you can sit and read in peace. I tend to start browsing through my books when I get in my library and sometimes don't get a whole lot of reading done! Does anyone else have that problem?

Beth (vanburren) | 69 comments Rick, I do that all the time!! I used to look through my books and read the backs of them looking for a book to actually sit down and read, but then I'd realize that I'd been "playing" with my books for over two hours!! I had to come up with a game to play to help me pick out my next book to read.

BTW, I love your little reading corner:). . .very cozy!

There's something very comforting (to me, anyway!) about having a lot of books around, especially unread ones. I get the same cozy, secure feeling from a well-stocked pantry, too, LOL -- it's like the worst could happen, but I'd still be set!

It's sometimes a bit too cosy, after a long days work, I put on some nice relaxing music, pour myself a glass of red wine and start reading my book and within half-an-hour I could be a sleep :)

Totally agree Lea, nothing feels better!

Susan I tend to over stock my pantry as well Lea! Never know when a snow storm is going to hit here in Wisconsin-LOL! Okay some times it is the middle of July but I like to be prepared-hahahaha!

Paulfozz Some lovely reading rooms here! I don't have 'that' many books as I have to balance storage with my large dvd collection so periodically go through my books and take unwanted ones to the local charity shops but my main collection of books are in a large bookcase next to an armchair in my living room, which is where I sometimes sit and read, though I'm as likely to be reading in bed or in a chair in my back garden (weather permitting!). I have another small bookcase nearby, mostly housing Terry Pratchett books but I'm in the middle of sorting out my house and getting rid of a lot of junk -it is going to take quite a long time to get the place organised as I do tend to squirrel stuff away.

I need to secure the bookcase to the wall really but though ugly the cardboard under the front feet works as well and doesn't involve me using my abysmal DIY non-skills! That's a dvd boxset of the Sopranos on top of the bookcase... I need to make room on my dvd shelves to move that really.

edit: I've moved another bookcase over next to this one and rearranged some books so it's a little different now. I've finally moved that DVD set though!

Paulfozz The re-arranged library:

The left case has Terry Pratchett, general fiction, my OS maps, DIY (as though I do much of that!) and cookery books. The right case has my good fiction including to be read, natural history, my new naturalist collection (my current obsession, they take up most of the third shelf):

then more natural history, science, classics, non-fiction and some reference, electronics and yet more natural history.

May end up with a tall bookcase in the spot taken by the small case, though I don't need one yet. I need to work out what to do with the blank space where that bookcase used to stand... and the pile of junk on the floor that was on it!
