Nina | 6069 comments I watched "The Iron Lady" last evening. I can't say I truly watched as I slept through probably half. Yes, partly I was tired but I found it unpleasant and mostly boring. I didn't agree with the Academy as I mostly thought of Meryl Streep as herself not Margaret Thatcher. I am probably alone in this opinion. i am presently in a mountain cabin east of San Diego and although snow was predicted it didn't appear.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I have "The Iron Lady" on my Netflix queue.
Can't wait to see it. I love Meryl Streep.
Enjoy CA!

message 153: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy. I too like Meryl Streep but perhaps the movie was too depressing to me and my daughter in law felt the same. If we are older and hope not to fall victim to Alz...or have had loved ones in this situation it isn't entertaining to watch this. Just an opinion. And alas, it did snow; so up over the mountain we headed to get to a motel in San Diego. But, slippery roads and snowplows had us turn around and go a longer way rather than climb the mountains. The day before it was 67 degrees. Now I am back to normal in KS, I guess. What is normal?

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I didn't know that "The Iron Lady" dealt with Alzheimer's disease. But I suppose Ronald Reagan is included in the movie and he had it.

Here's a link to a NY Times review of a related book, Reagan and Thatcher: The Difficult Relationship by Richard Aldous:

Welcome back! Sounds like you saw some unusual weather in CA.

message 155: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments No, Regan wasn't mentioned, I did read the British were very unhappy that the movie dealt so much with the Alz...rather than her actual long term and what she acommplished during that time. It seemed to just skip over most of that to me. Maybe you will like the movie. I almost felt it was a vehicle to show off Meryl Streep's talent as an actress. See what you think after seeing it.

Glenn (vbprog) Hello all - I was brought to this group while looking at GR entries on the book Sarah's Key. I see the group book list is very interesting and overall I haven't found a way in GR to really discuss the books that I'm currently enthralled with. This may be the one!

Hi Glenn. Welcome to the group. Hope you will discuss some of the books you've read at our book thread. It's at:

Nice to have you with us.

Mike | 19 comments Hi, my name is mike, a huge reader and author. I joined this group because it's near me and convenient. I will post something when my book is almost done. Right now I'm on page 68 of it, and it's a realistic fiction/inspirational story, well actually it's a one book series(a book split into different parts for different stories). I am writing it mainly for teens and young adults, but, as with most books, anyone will enjoy it. I also just started on a novel too, but I can post about that at another time. Well now ya know a little about me, so bye.

message 161: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments To Mike and Glenn, welcome to anyone interested in joining discussions on books. Sometimes it is lively and other times informative. Look forward to hearing more about your book, Mike, and I too couldn't put down, Sarah's Key; haunting me still, glenn.

So far, I have found no one who liked the movie, The Iron Lady, mainly because all they focused on was the Alz... and little about her days and years as PM. We all seemed to agree it was a vehicle for Meryl Streep. And I guess it paid off.

I didn't mind the approach it took. I found it interesting.

Mike, here's a link that might be helpful in your writing:
http://thesaurus.com/

I use the Thesaurus quite often, especially when I'm looking for a better word to use. Sometimes I get good ideas by simply looking at the synonyms which their lists provide. For example check out the suggestions they provide to use in place of the word "interesting":
http://thesaurus.com/browse/interesti...
Scroll all the way to the bottom. There's a lot there. It's "intriguing". (Just found that word there.)

Do the same thing for "wonderful". The Thesaurus is not only "wonderful", it's "valuable". (Just found that word there!) :)

I wish I had used a Thesaurus more when I was going to school. Nowadays it's so easy with the Internet at your fingertips. (Hope you know how to touch-type.) :)

Just having the habit of browsing through the Thesaurus will increase your vocabulary. Of course, reading good books helps too.

Good luck at school!

Kerry (kerryd) | 2 comments Hi! I had the pleasure of meeting Joy today and she told me about this group. I'm excited to be a part of it and to hear about what everyone is reading. Along with my sister, I run a gift shop in Downtown Glens Falls called Downtown Charm. I was so happy to meet you today, Joy, and thank you for the invitation to join the group!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Welcome, Kerry. It's nice to meet another person from Joy's neck of the woods.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hi Kerry! What a nice surprise to wake up and find YOU here! This is the first time I'm online since I met you yesterday and it's my first post of the day. I've already used the McGillycuddy's Bug Bee Gone soap which I bought in your store. It has a nice clean fragrance; the eucalyptus and citronella scents should help keep the bugs away. The sign I bought is up on my wall already. It says:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"All you need is love... and a dog." :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I enjoyed browsing through your store. Thanks for the $25.00 gift certificate which I won at Wood Theater. I'd been wanting to visit "Downtown Charm" for a while and that gift certificate brought me to the store. Your store certainly has a lot of charm!

As I told you, I'll be posting about your store in another section of this group soon. It's called "Glens Falls-Goings-on about town." I just have to wake up and have my morning coffee. :)

PS-Here's a link to my post about your store:

PPS-Welcome to the group! In all my excitement, I forgot the most important thing. We welcome you and hope you will feel free to add comments or create new topics at our group.

Nina | 6069 comments This quote was in our Food Section of our newspaper this morning: It was one from a featured cook of the week: "And like the food I eat, I find that a life lived with balance and a sense of gratitude is one that is truly magical," Myrna Minnis. I thought it was a good one.

Welcome to our group, Kathy. Hope you will continue to post here. We'd like to hear from you.

I looked at the GR description of Gone Girl. I see it's a mystery/thriller. You might enjoy the following GR review I found:

I wonder if you will agree with it.

message 175: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Hi Kathy, Welcome try, "The Shoemaker's Wife," and "The invisible Bridge," as they have strong female characters and both are good historical fiction.

message 177: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, they were the best books that I read this year.

message 178: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments They're on my keep-in-mind shelf, Nina. I put them on my shelf when you recommended the books a few months ago.

The shoemaker's wife - Author: Adriana Trigiani
Summary:"Two star-crossed lovers--Enza and Ciro--meet and separate, until, finally, the power of their love changes both of their lives forever. Set during the years preceding and during World War I."
FROM: http://www.worldcat.org/title/shoemak...

The invisible bridge [a novel] - Author: Julie Orringer
Summary:"Set in Paris in 1937, The Invisible Bridge unfolds the story of three Jewish brothers and the turns their lives make in the face of love, art, and history as Europe hurdles towards World War II. One brother, an architecture student, arrives in Paris to deliver a letter and consequently enters a love affair the letter's recipient. Another brother, the eldest, travels to Modena to study medicine, and the youngest brother tries his hand at acting."
FROM: http://www.worldcat.org/title/invisib...

I found the above by inadvertently clicking on the "Libraries" button under the GR book description. I'm always discovering something new at Goodreads. :)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) I just want to say that I am an author and my new book, "A Secret Lies Deep," draws upon scenery and landmarks located in Glens Falls. I did alter the names of things, but I believe you will recognize many things in my descriptions.
My inspiration for looking up your city as I started to write my book centered on my using a living history museum as a critical element in the story. So, when I did a search for living history museums, Glens Falls museum showed up. The eastern location of the museum lent itself nicely to the story plot.

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Joy, I am so glad you wrote. I tried to reach you earlier, but you had some restriction on reaching you, so I failed.
Thanks for the tip regarding promotion. I didn't know about it till you mentioned it.
By the way, I recently watched the most recent "Last of the Mohicans." I don't know if you saw it but the scenery was magnificent. I am aware of the history in your territory.

Nina | 6069 comments That is totally interesting history about Cooper's Cave.

message 187: by JAKe (new)

JAKe Hatmacher (jakehatmacher) Yes, I read about the cave when I was doing my research on my book. I didn't use the cave in the story but there is reference to the falls and other sites. But, again, as I believe I mentioned before, I changed the names to all the places and to people. Thanks for the reference.
