I've never heard a real Scot say 'the noo' either, and I worked with a lovely Scottish boss for 5 years.
We English are rarely heard to say 'Tinkety-tonk old fruit' either - but, ne'mind eh?

Well, I've finished it. I often thought about reading an Atremis Fowl book to see what it was all about. I still don't know why he's got a girlie name!
If it hadn't been a group read there's a possibility I wouldn't have finished it. I found it all a bit too much of a muchness. Another problem I had is that to enjoy a book fully I have to empathise with at least one of the characters and they weren't 'real' to me.
It is very popular with young people and I can see why. It's the sort of fiction where you need to suspend your disbelief - I have to do that with quite a lot of Real Life at my age!
Nevertheless, I like to try something different and I'm glad I read it. Thanks Jud for suggesting it. Not easy trying to pick something for a group as diverse as we are.

Glad so many people have at least attempted to read it and understand that its not to everyone's taste but that was kind of why I choice it, thought it would be good to try something different that most people wouldnt usually have gone for.

Hiya Jud , heres one € on the Kindle copy its the next to last page of chapter 3
Root nearly popped a vein.
'Four €,' Four years? It's a wonder you lasted this long!
As there was a proper question mark and a proper exclamation mark I just puzzled a bit as to what the € could be, but its not vital to the plot ;o)

PS In this copy the quote from Lynne says "Four...Four years?"

Oh, and I'm Scottish (though lived in England since I was 4), and I say "the noo", as did both my Glaswegian parents.

Each to their own - plenty of people have enjoyed it. Maybe it was because I have a couple of books I'm really looking forward to reading, and went for this first because it was the "club read" and I wanted to get it read.

She then said " I enjoyed them when I read them - but I was younger then" (she is 16 :) )

I read for entertainment and escape so I like fantasy novels.

I will save the rest of my comments for one of the other threads in case they spoil the plot.
