Tracey (howlingbutterfly) Does anyone know where I can find a download of JAWS by Peter Benchley for my Kindle? I've checked Amazon and The Gutenberg Project; neither have it. TIA! Tracey

Tracey (howlingbutterfly) I found it at Tradebit Download Center (tradebit.com) for $.99!

stormhawk | 542 comments I don't believe that Jaws is legally available.

I'd really like to reread it, too.

Jaws is an old book, but not old enough to be out of copyright. Which means Project Gutenberg won't have it. And most likely since it's over 30 years old, if it's still under contract (doubtful) it's probably not a high priority for the publisher to digitize. And the author is dead, so I'm not sure if whoever now owns the copyright is looking to republish it.

Tracey (howlingbutterfly) It was republished in hardback in 2005, according to Amazon. Since it was just re-released in print, it's not a surprise to me that it's so hard to find in digital form. I didn't know Project Gutenberg only listed books that are out of copyright. What does it mean (legally) when a book is out of copyright? Is it the same as when a song is out of copyright, that anyone else can publish it as their own?

Once a book's copyright period is over (I believe it's Life of the author + 70 years, though I'm not positive) it means that anyone can publish the book without having to pay anyone royalties or ask permission. You'd still have to credit the original author or else you're plagiarizing them, but you can publish any way you want.

It also means you can modify and adapt the stories without needing permission. Think Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Stephen Harper (stephentharper) | 8 comments Hey, I realize u guys had this conversation 2 months ago, but...

Has anyone read Close to Shore by Michael Capuzzo? It's a non-fiction account of the 1916 attacks in New jersey that supposedly inspired Jaws in the first place.

Not sure to I want to go 12.99 for the Kindle version though. Just wondering if anybody had read it.
