Thanks, Diane.

message 203: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am now in Albania, reading Chronicle in Stone: A Novel.

Jessamy Judy wrote: "Jessamy wrote: "Gaeta1 wrote: "Still with Scott and Cherry-Garrard at the South Pole. What with an enormously long book audio book, and the accidental background reading I've been sort of compelled..."

Shackleton and my party in South were there just after Gaeta1 and their party. I came across some references to Scott and Cherry-Garrard in my book.

In all the part of South Africa that is South Africa, I guess. Plus the part that has Solomon's mines and a utopian paradise hidden in it.

Vicky (thesevagabondshoes) | 155 comments Jessamy wrote: "Shackleton ... managed to talk a lot about tea as well: how much they had, then how much tea they didn't have ..."

I climb mountains (well, the ones we have in the UK) with my climbing buddy for the sole purpose of having a cup of tea on the summit. I also kayak out to islands to stop for a cup of tea on the shore. We plan our trails around tea-breaks, getting back in time to go to the cafe and so on. It sounds like our kind of book.

message 208: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Gaeta:"Sir Ranulf Fiennes's looming self-regard blocked all vistas, so no."

Hahahaha!

message 209: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I am SO enjoying every minute spent in the company of Ismail Kadare. What imagination. I adore the writing style. I don't care WHAT he describes. It is how he does it that is so magical. In my view, this book, Chronicle in Stone: A Novel is much better than his other book The Three-Arched Bridge. He talks about childhood memories: his old stone village, magic, war, rain drops, women........

Janice (jamasc) I'm still in Iran (The Blood of Flowers) and will be there for another 5 hours of listening pleasure.

I will be arriving in the Antarctic, missing Gaeta1 and Jessamy by an iceberg, I presume. I will be cracking open the book Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage as soon as I turn off my computer.

Anne (reachannereach) I'm still in Belgium, but I'm also in Britain with The Sense of an Ending.

My mother always told me that " you can't sit with one tuchus at two weddings" but, with armchair travel you sure can.

Anyone else know that saying?

My mother used to say "With one tuchus, you can't dance at two weddings." My family is of Jewish heritage and my mother spoke Yiddish which is a German/Hebrew creole.

message 225: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Shomeret,
My mother used the "dance at two weddings" alternative as well. We are also Jewish, but my mother didn't speak Yiddish. But these phrases crept into the German language.

message 226: by Chel (last edited Jan 09, 2012 05:56PM) (new)

Chel | 187 comments I am leaving Italy for Germany to read The Adventurous Simplicissimus, which many consider to be one of the greatest German novels written. It takes place during the 1600's during the Thirty Years' War that devastated and negatively impacted Germany for two centuries afterwards. The character Simplicissimus is an itinerent soldier during this time period and also goes through many adventures in various capacities. Many say that this is one of the few records that puts a human description to that era. I am so excited about this one!

message 227: by Diane (new)

Diane | 370 comments I was (very) happy to finally leave Paulo Coelho behind in Brazil and set of for the jungles of 18th century Cote d'Ivoire with Queen Pokou. I have now escaped from that violence and tragedy into nearby Mali with Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali (Longman African Writers Series).

message 228: by Mikki (new)

Mikki I was stuck in Morocco forever, "walking, walking, walking, today and tomorrow, today and tomorrow" listening to Ahmed recount his life stories in A Life Full of Holes. It was draining and not even for this challenge as I started it in December!

Finally, finally moving on to Australia with Remembering Babylon!

I'm also reading Sightseeing, which has me in Thailand, simultaneously. I keep feeling to pulled to add the other books I'm reading to my list, but then I'd be duplicating countries...

Don't laugh but I tried this past summer and I can barely remember how to string together a sentence. I always want to answer the teacher in German and often combined the two and created Spagerman.

Judy, I'm in Australia now and might go straight to Vietnam next and then into Thailand, so I'll probably start Sightseeing at the end of next week...maybe.
