carol. | 2616 comments Agree with Ala. He has mystical elements, but I wouldn't call any of them fantasy.

Mach | 572 comments Pillars of the Earth is definetly not fantasy. One hundred prosent historical.

I seem to be the only one but PNR is a sub genre of fantasy as far as I'm concerned. It's an obvious mix of urban fantasy and romance.

I say Anita Blake should be in too.

I did. :p Yes, I like the series that much, especially the last book.

message 205: by Traci (new)

Traci I love Sherrilyn Kenyon but I do have to agree it's romance.

message 206: by Laurel (new)

Laurel PNR is wonderful, but it's Romance, not Fantasy.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Yah, The Pillars of Earth is a good book, but historical fiction...

The only Anita Blake book I ever started was pretty much erotica...I wouldn't even say PNR

Haven't read Wind-up Girl.

message 208: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) Wind-up Girl is scifi. Pillars of the Earth is historical

carol. | 2616 comments Anita Blake's first couple are UF but then its sleeze erotica. Unless it's fantasy because it has wereleopards?

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Anita Blake is what I'd consider erotic UF in the later books.

message 211: by Traci (new)

Traci I read PNR and the Anita Blake books were even too much for me.

As a dedicated and shameless romance reader, PNR is NOT fantasy. It is romance. Trust me on this. In fact, PNR stands for Paranormal Romance.

message 213: by Traci (new)

Traci @ KevinB Eliminating books on the list doesn't mean the book isn't good enough it just means that the majority of readers doesn't consider it fantasy.
btw I am not a serial killer was one of the best books I've read this year.

Yes, PARANORMAL romance :p I'm not denying its romancyness (new word?), but I consider anything 'paranormal' (like Twilight, Sookie Stackhouse, ...) fantasy too. Just because something is one genre (i.e. romance) it doesn't mean it can't be another as well (i.e. fantasy).

There's plenty of, say, urban fantasy that crosses into horror or thriller or noir territory. I recently read a book that was a pure detective story, only it was set in an alternative world with demons and shape shifters and magic so people classify it as a fantasy.

But if the majority says no PNR on the list, then I'm cool with that. :) At least it will mean that a number of popular but i.m.o. awful books wont polute the list. :p

^This. Especially the last line - very much so.

Also this:
