Alexa Kelly The first book I selected was "My Mom Can't Read" by Muriel Stanek. This is the story of a first grade student in need of help with reading. However, when she goes to her mother for help with her homework, she learns that her mother cannot read either and has been pretending that she could. When Tina tells her teacher about this, her teacher finds them help and Tina and her mother end up learning to read together. I really enjoyed that this story was written from the daughter's point of view and found it quite touching.

The next book I chose was "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut" by Dr. Suess. I chose this book because Dr. Suess was by far my favorite author growing up and I still own a ton of his books. However, I never read this particular book. The book teaches children that it is possible to read with your eyes shut but you can see a whole lot more with them open. This book, like many of the Dr. Suess books I read when I was younger, is excellent for beginning readers because of the rhyming and repetition, which are key features of all of Suess's works.

The third book I chose was "I Took My Frog to the Library" by Eric Kimmel. I was interested in this book because the title hinted that it could be a cute, silly story, which it was. This is the story of a little girl named Bridgett who decided to bring her animals to the library. Her frog, elephant, hen, hyena and python cause chaos in the library and the librarian is forced to ask her to leave. So instead of reading in the library, her elephant ends up reading aloud to everyone. I'm glad I chose this story because it is a great example of a book that children would love because it is a fun adventure.

Laura As you know, I am a huge Theodor Geisel fan! Dr. Seuss books are great beginning readers. However, there are many with deep meanings such as, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, Yertle the Turle, and many others. My most favorite is the Lorax.
