The book takes place in a town Dickens chooses not to mention. In the beginning of the story, Oliver Twist's mother dies from giving birth to her child and he is placed in an orphanage and sent to work. At the end of the first chapter Dickens describes the death of Twist's mother and the decision of the doctor to give the baby up for adoption. At the end of the second chapter Twist is sent off to a new home for children who are shipped off to work and get paid next to nothing.
