So we have a case where you and your sister do not share an opinion about a book!

Excellent! I love that a lot of the members who read this book gave it 5 stars! Think it's our most successful group read yet.

And this has motivated me to get on my mum's back again and prod at her to get on and read this book!

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

I gave my copy to my mother-in-law a couple of days after I finished it and told her she had to read it. It wasn't a suggestion, it was an instruction! (I'm not really that bossy but we get on very well and she loves to read too - I know she will love it)

message 109: by Jessi (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jessi | 49 comments I'm still struggling through this book. If I don't pick up pace soon I may just give up on it all together. But I'm at the part where Max just got to their house so maybe that will help me change my mind.

message 110: by Char (new) - rated it 5 stars

Char (CharmaineElaine) Awww... really Jessi? You're the first person to not enjoy it. That makes me sad. :(

message 111: by Jessi (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jessi | 49 comments I'm really trying to but I just can't get used to the author's writing style.

message 112: by Char (new) - rated it 5 stars

Char (CharmaineElaine) I can see why you'd find it difficult. I peresonally like writing styles like that. :)

message 113: by Jessi (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jessi | 49 comments Well I'll keep trying but it's taking me longer than normal to get into it

message 114: by Char (new) - rated it 5 stars

Char (CharmaineElaine) Okay. :) I've been known to get through a book without actually getting into the story. It makes me appreciate books I love more.

Credit to you for not crying. I was a wreck. I have to be honest, I'm glad you found it at school because I think it's a brilliant book for teens to read as it's so much better than YA.

I agree, credit to you! When I got to the end of the book there was no way I was ever going to manage to get away with not crying. I freaked out the boyfriend! He came upstairs to find me crying into my pillow and couldn't for the life of him figure out why!

I too am very happy to hear that you found this book at your school library! It's definitely the sort of book I feel that teens should be reading.

message 121: by Cynjit (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cynjit | 33 comments Okay...so last night I cried myself to sleep...Thanks to The Book Thief...What amazed me is that you know what's coming...because death already tells you..but you don't know how or when...and then....wow...shocking and heartbreaking. I have never read a book that affected me this strongly...I felt so connected to the characters...and I loved the POV.

I pictured death as a man...dark and shadowy... I loved his humor and the way he saw the world. My favorite character was Rudy... he was so loving and forgiving.

I agree with what someone said early on about being able to forgive these characters even when they did things wrong...I was surprised by myself that the stealing didn't turn me against them.

I adored it...Thanks for encouraging me to read this. I don't normally read modern historical fiction..but I am so glad I did. And I recommended it to all my students.

message 122: by Char (new) - rated it 5 stars

Char (CharmaineElaine) I know, when I read Death saying how it ended I was like, oh, I don't need to read this now, but I'm glad I did, I found myself hoping that Death had got it wrong because you just fall in love with everyone. The POV was incredible, I think it was a stunning idea.

I think everyone loved Rudy best. I'm Team Rudy too! (If I was on Twitter I would've hashtagged that, in fact I nearly just did!)

I think it was the reasons behind the stealing that enabled the forgiveness.

Aww, no problem Cynjit. I think it was a great way to get a lot of people out of their comfort zones when it comes to reading. Woo! More people need to read this book. :)

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I found this novel predictable, but still liked it. I think having Death as the narrator was a very interesting touch.
