The story takes place in a Sudanese village, a seven year old boy is trapped in a country so corrupt that war is the main strategy to survive and gain freedom. Everyone of different ethnicity is fighting because the color of there skin, it effects how there villages are ran. In chapter 1. it explains how Emmanuel Jal gets to were he is. He seen a lot of things in his life, his mother and father were well off for a short amount of time because his father was a police officer in his village. But as war with the SPLA (Sudan People's Liberation Army) got more intense his family was separated. Only to be brought back together in another village which was safe from harm for a short while.
