Megan I think I read another book of this series. I think it was called Vailant? I couldn't get past the third chapter. After her mom had sex with her boyfriend, I found it too squicky for me.

If you read that one, did it get better?

woah...that is pretty squicky. What the heck?

I might have to look in to that ;)

I love squickiness. sometimes.

Megan So you didn't read it? I thought Tithe was part of that series.

Yeah, Valiant is in that series... but I never read any of them. :D

Didn't plan on it. All the drugs and alcohol... ugh!

message 11: by Kiara (new)

Kiara I liked this book. I didn't exactly love it because it did get a bit confusing. Its true they talk about drugs and alcohol... but so does (i think) wickedly lovely. Have any of you read that?

message 12: by Megan (last edited Oct 14, 2008 05:29PM) (new)

Megan That book (Wicked Lovely) is on my to-read list.

It's not the drugs/alcohol/sex that bothers me exactly . . . just the way it was handled in Valiant. Too casual. Not enough consequences for the characters' actions. I didn't think that was believable, and they weren't really relevant to the over-all plot. (That is, as far as I was able to read.)

I don't mind these sorts of things if they are central the the story, but it seemed to me that Holly Black just put them in there for the "wow" factor. I guess it's just not my style.

Kiara Oh, I kind of get what you mean. Like you wish the author wouldn't make it seem smoking was common or drinking.

message 14: by Megan (new)

Megan Exactly! I mean, I can understand if it pertained to the story -- like if the main character's father had a drinking problem, and abused them or something. But when the author just puts it in to make their character sound cool, it really bothers me.

message 15: by Kiara (new)

Kiara It makes it seem as if smoking was cool.

message 16: by Megan (new)

Megan Yes. And smoking without getting lung cancer.
