The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
I have read this book when I was in high school. I enjoyed it very much and continued to read the next three books. I am going to try to fine the book and reread it.
Hi, I'm joining the group read next month so that I can give the book I borrowed from my friend since last month. Haha. Have fun guys!
I'm excited this won. I need to finally read Tolkien so I won't keep getting teased because I haven't read it.
I am excited about reading about Bilbo again...he is a very memorable character...
When I was in 3rd grade, I had a case of chicken pox on top of poison ivy, on top of (measles or mumphs). I was a miserable boy. My father stayed home to take care of me and, read the Hobbit to me. I wanted to read what he was reading. I may have had nightmares from events in the woods (don't want to spoil it) but I still remember that as the best time I was ever sick. I read it for myself in High School and that lead to a couple of close friends reading it and enjoying it.
Now I'm reading it to my 6 year old daughter. I've had to start over a bunch, but she always asks me to read the Hobbit. So, I do.
This is a great story with so much for every age to enjoy from pedia-care to medicare. Both this book and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy are fantastic. Have fun.
hi there, just joined the site and am going to read the hobit. Is the first discussion throughout september or do we read the book and then discuss it in october?
Hi, Melanie. You can start discussing any time after September 1 on this thread. The thread will stay open after October 31, but the active discussion is up until the end of October.
Just got a copy of the Hobbit today....EXCITED!!!!!
I think you should read this first! Absolutely. It does precede LOTR in the time line. Bilbo is Frodo's Adoptive Father. The Hobbit takes place before Frodo is born. also, you'll find the "tone" of the Hobbit is much different than LOTR. Tolkien published the hobbit then spent years with his writing group, including C.S.Lewis pumping out Narnia Books left and write, trying to "prefect" LOTR so it was "finished" many hears after the Hobbit.
I have read this twice or three times a year since I was 10 (I am now 52) as well as reading the Lord of the Rings Trilogy 2-3 times a year. This book sets up the story to follow in the Lord of the Rings but is much more childish than those books. I taught my daughter to read at age 4 (she is now 18 and was always homeschooled) and she reads this and LOTR a couple of times a year. This is charming but it shows the elves and other creatures in a silly light which definitely changes in the more adult LOTR. I do love this book. Tolkien was such a genius at creating worlds and histories/languages for them. He put a tremendous amount of care into his work and it shows.
Sashana wrote: "Do you guys think I can still read this even though I've never read The Lord of The Rings?"Yes, by all means. It is the first book. It sets the stage for the rest.
Hugh, I completely agree with you regarding the tone of The Hobbit. It's been quite a few years since I've read it and I remember demolishing the thing within a week then eagerly moving on to the LOTR trilogy only to halt in bemusement over the abrupt change in writing style. The Hobbit has a decidedly more whimsical (almost fairytale-like) tone compared to it's austere, adult trilogy that followed. I remember finishing the trilogy and overcome with a severe sense of melodrama, re-read The Hobbit again just to lighten the mood. hehe

It's eather read the Hobbit again or Bubba and the Dead Body (yes it's a real book). Bubba's not exactly a classic of literature though.... yet.
well I will be joining soon....I can't wait to start....
Hugh (The other Hugh) wrote: "And I think the Ents are going to be a little angry at what Irene did around my house."If there is any part of the house you hate, knock it down before your 'ents see it and blame it on Irene.
Hugh (The other Hugh) wrote: "My Ent Polly wouldn't like that Becky Thatcher!"Just thought I would put my idea out there!
Loved the hobbit ever since I was a kid. My dad loved these books when he was growing up & insisted I read them. I fell in love with them as well. I wish they would make a Hobbit movie. Never understood why they didn't with the popularity of the Lord of the Rings movies.
Theresa wrote: "Thank god! (kidding Hugh!) hehe"I didn't even get to my Ent-chalada joke either.

That's how I first heard the Hobbit. I've read it several times since and now I'm reading it to my kids.
I thought they were making a "Hobbit" movie?
I am officially starting today....In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit!!! OOOOOO love this book!!!!

Nicolle wrote: "Ok I can't wait to start, I'm starting this evening...has anyone else started yet?"I'm with you. I'll go pull it off my shelf now. I haven't read it in MANY years.
How far is everybody??? I am still on the first chapter...didn't get as far with it as I had hoped to yesterday..I guess that's what happens when you have 2 kids..and an accident prone husband:)
Hugh (The other Hugh) wrote: "It's exciting. The first ... lets call it a "mini adventure" reads almost like a folk tale."I read 3 chapters last night and had to put it down so I wouldn't just keep going. That first "mini adventure" as you call it Hugh had me hooked again. I really don't think I've read it for 30 years. Forgot what I was missing.
I am heading to my parents this weekend for some much needed R&R I am hopefully going to get through a good chink of it!!!
I loved the movies but never got around to reading LOTR or The Hobbit. This is a good time to do that.
They are making a Hobbit Movie. It's in Pre-production right now and Peter Jackson is the producer and director again, so if you liked the other LOTR movies by him, this one should please as well. They're actually breaking it up into two movies because there is too much in the book to cram into one 2 or even 3 hour film. I've seen some pictures for the dwarves and I'm VERY excited! My husband proposed to me with a note in the Hobbit book and we read that and LOTR our first year of marriage. Since it's been 10 years now, it'll be especially fun to revisit. :)

I think it gets better from there too. Both in pace and fun-quotient.
I'm up to chapter four now. These elves seem like fun, and I love the idea of the moon letters. Bilbo is adorable!!
Bilbo is a very unforgettable character....I just love him!!!
