No - and I have absolutely no intention of trying it. If my mother, who is a wonderful cook, can't get me to like spinach then nobody can. I find it has a nasty metallic taste that nothing can get rid of.

No I haven't. 'My step mothers an alien' has Kim Bassinger (is that even how you spell her name?) in it.
Its easy to take things up as harsh when they aren't intended that way - but really we are all about friendly teasing rather than harsh words here.
Which is exactly as it was meant of course. Guess I'll leave the oiys to Simon in future. He does it so well.

I just paid £3.50 for a kilo of manky tomatoes. Argh!!!!
Veg order £20 this week and I got virtually nothing.

I've had lettuce butties for my lunch & am planning pasta with mushrooms,cheese & tomato sauce.....that should allow a few of you to have my meat portion for the day.
Ok - I'll have meat, meat and meat for dinner.. Although I am feeling quite drained at the moment from this cough, so i might just have chicken soup instead.
THE GREAT BRITISH ONION BHAJI I just thought I'd post my really simple, but really effective Bhaji recipe. It's cheap and fun and very easy.
200 g gram flour
1 Tablespoon Tandoori Paste
1 clove garlic, chopped
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
One large Spanish onion (chopped)
chopped coriander
cumin and red chille
lemon juice
cup of peas
salt
vegetable oil for deep frying
water
Put gram flour in a bowl
Add turmeric, lemon juice, coriander, garlic, cumin, chille, salt and tandoori paste. Mix together thoroughly.
Add onion and peas. Add to bowl and mix.
Then add as much cold water as is necessary to make a creamy (but not too watery) blend.
Then make into small balls/ bhajis and deep fry until crispy.
NB. Take out after a few minutes. Cut a small hole in the middle and continue frying for a few minutes so it's cooked inside.
Serve with homemade raita
That's it!

If anyone spoke of diets in front of my Mum she used to say "There is a lot of folk in the graveyard would be glad of my appetite"!
This is an appeal for recipes. My husband has just been diagnosed with diabetes. He's got a really sweet tooth so I wondered if any of you had any nice recipes suitable for diabetics please. Particularly crumbles as I've been making a lot lately. If I substitute sweetener instead of sugar - any idea what proportions I should use? I'm hoping that it's less sweetener than sugar because when I looked at the price of artificial sweetener it was quite expensive for a small amount - also, if I used the same amount of sweetener as I do sugar then I would be using up the whole tub!
I've been reading the info that we've been given already and we are already eating a lot of the right things like wholemeal bread, pasta and brown rice etc. I make the crumble mixture with half oats and wholemeal (often non-wheat) flour. So I'm just wondering how to reduce the sugar - would the crumble mix taste ok with no sugar at all if I just put it in with the fruit? Advice from experienced cooks would be appreciated!

'Silver Spoon Light' is supposed to be a good substitute for sugar (: (it's recommended by doctors a lot). When my grandma cooks for us on a Sunday (my uncle is diabetic) she just increases the apple and decreases the amount of crumble. I don't know if that helps..
Also Karen, if you increase the starchy carbohydrates he eats (pasta, etc) and include more fruit/veg, he can still have some of his sweet things ;) What my uncle does is have a 'treat' on a Friday night where he can have 1 item made with a normal recipe (just a smaller portion)
Also, have you tried using dried fruit in crumbles? They usually don't need sugar with them if you used dried fruit (except maybe a light sprinkling on the top)

Weight watchers used to recommend stewing rhubarb in low cal (sugar free) lemonade for crumble & pies, so no sugar there.
Glad to help, Karen (:Sponge cake is one of the recipes that comes to mind where you can half the sugar and it still works fine!
Foods with sweetener instead of sugar don't keep as long, just so you know (:

He's had a couple of tests and we'll be talking the results over with a doctor on Monday and will find out if he needs medication and if so, what. Or whether we can manage it with his diet. We already eat quite healthily so we might just have to tweak things a bit..

I hope Bill just needs to manage it with his diet! You eat pretty healthily anyway, so I'm pretty sure it will just be controlled with his diet (: Fingers crossed for Monday!

I've made a few "Diabetic recipes" I found a webiste (might have been the one above) that said just cut down on the sugar and add some fruit instead. I have never added extra fruit to anything but have cut down the sugar (sometimes by nearly a third) in some of my recipes and they taste just the same. Much healthier for everyone involved. You just cant do it if your using yeast.
