Khadija who is better? in my opinion, i'd say even though SM is awesome, she is just NO match for J.K.!! the way J.K presents the characters r just soo good and she also had many many characters in HP series to choose from, and they r all so widely different..i think it takes a real talent to make each character in the HP books...i tried once to count them all and i could say there r almost 200 characters!! imagine!! j.k has to create funny characters (fred+george) and don't u realize how its hard it is that almost every single times she mentions these two (which is often) she had to write something funny, because those two r pranksters? or when she has to write about snape who is very sarcastic and filled with critisism bottled up inside him and loves to throw it all at the students? how hard is it to keep inventing many critisism in order to complete this character? (he's there in the story ALOT) and j.k has to write wise words ALWAYS when it comes to dumbledore!! unlike SM, who writes in bella's P.O.V and that's easy because most of the dialogue is occuring between bella and edward, so it's not that difficult and the plot isn't that complicated unlike HP....and bella's so absurd!! what, with bella jumping off a cliff in new moon?lol...anyways...post ur opinions here!

message 2: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ STEPHENIE MEYER all the way! I can't stand Harry Potter at all; I love Twilight and The Host. I could barely even get through the first two and a half HP books before I gave them up. All of Meyer's books have kept me hooked.

Tami I am not sure you can compare the two. J.K. Rowling wrote amazing books regarding good versus evil in a way that everyone could enjoy them. Brigid, not quite sure how you couldn't, but anyways.
Stephanie Meyer created a love story for teens to swoon over that became a hit with all readers.
There is really no way to compare the two. They are both wonderfully talented authors. I personally enjoyed the Harry Potter series more than the Twilight ones, but thought The Host was better.

Tiamat100 They are both amazing but there is no way to compare them. they are completely different books. You cannot say one is better because they are aimed at different people and tell completely different tales. Both authors are amazingly talented.

Slaiman Do You compare that new kid on the block to J.k >? i can't say how many million copy she sold because it's increasing every day , and you dare to say that bunch of stupid vampire stories is better ?

Khadija all J.K's books r fantastic... i thought SM's books started cracking at new moon. i think if she left twilight alone, it would have been much much better...cuz in there, edward was mysterious and sweet and everything..but in the rest of the books...i dunno..he kinda changed..he's too perfect, u know? and i don't like characters who r too perfect because they seem less real...but HP's characters r flawed like any normal person, but the series itself or not flawed...the way she created the characters so they'd seem real is excellent!! i'm a J.K.R fan all the way!!! i soo can't wait 4 her next book...i heard it would be realistic and totally far away of all the magic world :(....wizardy will be missed!!

Garrett Sorry, but J.K. is without a doubt the better writer; although the writing in the Twilight series did get progressively better with each book. By "Breaking Dawn" (and "The Host")the writing was actually pretty good, but still not as good as J.K.'s H.P. series.

Tiphaine Why does it matter? Can't we all just co-exist? You can't compare the two when they both write different things...it would be like trying to compare Stephen King to Nicholas Sparks...come on, really?

message 9: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ But Meyer has more than one story to tell, which is what I admire about her. Both The Host and Twilight are fantastic, and also her short story in Prom Nights from Hell. JK Rowling has only ONE STORY that she's been writing for like ten years. PLUS she writes all those stupid "guides" and gaaah ... she's just squeezing as much money as possible out of HP. It's stupid.

Khadija ugh!! i'm soooo not gonna comment on what u said, Brigid. but i would like to say that if u think twilight rocks, just read HP and c how each character has depth AND the flawless plot. i wouldn't deny that THE HOST and TWILIGHT were great but they don't even begin to compare with HP. new moon, eclipse, and breaking dawn r just plain stupid. no offense. i think we disagree alot, Brigid, but i think i do understand y u like twilight, but to me HP is the best :)

Khadija + HP deserves all the money it got. it just proves how much it's loved!! and even though J.K has one story to tell (wrong!! she's currently writing another book which is realistic) it goes along in 7 books because the plot is too great to really understand until u read all the books. i think SM's twilights series sucks because she's soo eager to finish a book every year and she doesn't have much time to pour all her efforts and thinking in it. that's y it turned out with alot of faults. on the other hand, J.K poured alot of her time and effort into each book and created the perfect plot. ofcoursssssse she's gonna take 10 years to do that. fans waited for it all those years because it was worth it!

message 12: by Dee (new) - rated it 2 stars

Dee I enjoyed both series of books very much--for different reasons. JKR is a terrific plotter--who would have guessed that facts shown on a Chocolate Frog card in Book 1 would make an impact on the events in Book 7? SM has a good grasp on what pleases young adults (perhaps females especially) and really captures some of the angst of that age well. Both writers have amazing imaginations and develop characters quite nicely. If I had to pin "best writer" award on one of them, I would probably go with Rowling for sheer depth and perseverance, and creating a very different world than our own. But--that is in no way meant to disparage Meyer's excellent work. These are all books I hope my kid will read when he's old enough.

Janepage Stephenie Meyer. That's all I have to say.

message 14: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ THANK YOU!!! SOMEONE SANE!! lol. XD

message 16: by Lama.a. (new) - added it

Lama.a. I prefer JKR. Her books are more meaningful and have much deeper meanings, not to mention the amazing plot. The way she made simple details matter is simply incredible. Every single detail and incident has an effect. Although some may appear books later. (HP and the DH SPOILER! The fact that Harry caught his first snitch in his mouth saved a lot of trouble, investigation, and looooong unnecessary stories in DH-7 books later!). JKR hides deep meanings in the book that you have to dig the book so you could get them. I DEFINITELY agree with Khadija<< Especially on the whole character thing.

Twilight, ooooh, Silly Bella. Everyone loves Eddy and Bells, but think again. If Ed wasn't good-looking, do you think Bella would've liked him? NOPE! She loved him because of his LOOKS. Too shallow. Much too shallow. And he gave her a second look because he couldn't read her mind. How romantic... But I did enjoy Twilight, but the others, naaah!

Anyway, that's what I think. And yeah, The Host is much much better than Twilight =D

i totally agree. Ian and Wanda's relationship is much better and based on loving the person from the inside, unlike Twilight's which began with "the looks". in The Host, Ian at first attempted to kill Wanda, because he considered her as a parasite.

now, don't tell me edward felt the same about bella and wanted to kill her too. that's normal. vampires crave human blood. it's just too obvious that edward and Bella's relationship is too shallow. and it seemed like the whole point of the book was that if u were foolish and stupid u could get anything u want!! bella got EVERYTHING she wanted without sacrifices or losses or even a bit of effort. in HP books, the characters get what they want through hard work, and occasionally lose someone they love.

honestly, i loved twilight but as a series, i think it sucks. new moon, eclipse, and BD were such huge disappointments for me. on the other hand, u can count on J.K's book to turn out better than u have ever imagined!!

message 18: by Paige (last edited Nov 03, 2008 05:46PM) (new) - added it

Paige I read the Harry Potter series, and loved them, before the Twilight series and after i read the Twilight series Harry Potter was like NOTHING!! compared to Twilight and i loved the book Breaking Dawn and whoever thinks it sets a bad example for teens......
It's a FRIGEN ******FICTIONAL******** book about a girl who falls in love with a VAMPIRE not an average human a VAMPIRE. And if you are smart u might read the Breaking Dawn FAQ she clearly says IT'S not supposed to be a role model for girls it's just a BOOK. And I don't think any of you are ever going to marry a vampire. And Renesme is really adorable. Also the battle that everyone wanted with the Volturi couldn't have happened or all your favorite characters like Edward and Bella and anyone else would ALL DIE because the Volturi are more powerful. Anyways I say Twilight by far!!!!I love Renesme!!! But i also think that these books cannot be compared because twilight is based on the dangerous love bella and edward have and harry potter is about a wizard who is heroic and defeats voldemort ect... Twilight is a romance like novel and harry potter is not.... they do have the characters in HP fall in love but it's not really an important part in the book unlike twilight where it's all focused on love....

message 19: by Paige (new) - added it

Paige I also like SM's writing technique better. because she writes it as First Person and her Prefaces are sooooo good!!

message 20: by Mrs.Phillips (last edited Oct 23, 2008 06:15PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mrs.Phillips I know Happy Potter is hugely popular with many, but it never engaged me and held me like Stephanie Meyer. Whether you think she ended the story wrong, or didn't like the direction she took the story line, she writes how she writes, and many find her appealing, a page turner.

I think I liked The Host better too, but I had no problem reading all four Twilight books over the summer; I liked them that much. I never could get that into HP. Though this may not be most people's opinion, I know I am not alone either.

And Paige--wouldn't you love to read a book about Renesmee and Jacob once SHE's 18?

message 21: by Paige (new) - added it

Paige Yeah! that would be such a good book!!!! I hope she does!!!!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I like STephanie Meyer because all her books are soo interesting. I only got threw the first 3 Harry Potter books before I got bored

message 23: by Alannah (new)

Alannah I also don't think they can, or should, be compared.
But I have to say that it's a shame people can't get into HP. I grew up with the series and always found them enjoyable, even after multiple readings :)

Pearl I don't know this is hard, their both very talented author.

I grew up with Harry Potter and just recently got in to the Twilight series, I find Twilight more addicting but HP is still so special and a fantastic fantasy.

So yeah, I guess I love 'em both!

Khadija "J.K SUCKS BIG EGGS!"

i don't think soooooooooooooooooooo!! many people praise the way she writes and she is widely popular. many people would agree on that. and THAT is a FACT.

but not many people praise SM's writing. it's got alotta mistakes!! she is soo eager to finish a book each year, therefore she doesn't really think them all through...there r alot of contradictions in her story and alot of holes in her plot, unlike JK....but the host was great, i'll grant her that.

sooo....J.K ROCKS BIG TIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEEE!!

message 26: by Leslie (new) - added it

Leslie Stephenie needs a much better editor! Her books really tap into the 'sexual tension' between the characters. She's got that down to a T ; however, her publisher failed her by letting through so many errors.

message 27: by asaddo (new)

asaddo I can't say these authors can really be compared. They write and appeal to two different audiences; are two different genres completely! One takes place in a small town in 1st person perspective, and the other involves an entire world!

I have to admit, I have to get back to the Harry Potter series. I stopped after book 3, but not for lack of enjoyment, I just wasn't that hurried to go grab the next installment.

SM's books are lovely. The prefaces intrigue you, and Bella's a gorgeous character to follow. To all the criticisms about how shallow it is, well, it may seem that way on the outside, but it's a difficult thing to describe when you find your soul-mate. Of course they're irresistible! That person is just ... amazing! And SM's really captured that. Took myself 23 years, but when I met my own miracle, it floored me completely and I've literally moved continents, hehe.

Slaiman Ok i have to say the host is a good novel but ,STEPHENIE MEYER made inly 4 books in her series which sucked for her and i regret buying these vampire Ew books .

J.k rowling in my opinion is the best series writer i have ever seen ,but sTEPHENIE is a good author but i think sTEPHENIE can't write a story such as harry potter , not in her wildest dreams , she may got lucky by writing the host , but she is don't copmare to j.k .
at least j.k don't look like a vampire

message 29: by Kara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kara I enjoyed Stephenie Meyer's books, but she doesn't even come close to comparing with J.K. Rowling. Rowling created an entire world and her plots are complex and unique. Meyer's plot is simple and done many, many times before; a love triangle. I enjoyed her books because of the paranormal aspects (vampires and werewolves) but I have to admit the overly mushy dialogue and flawless characters got annoying after awhile. Rowling's books are and will remain classics of childrens' literature for decades to come, whereas Meyer is very popular currently, but I think her books will eventually fade into the background after the hype dies down.

message 30: by Allison (last edited Nov 01, 2008 04:58PM) (new)

Allison Come on. I don't understand why this is even an issue. How can you even compare Twlight to all that is Harry Potter?
First off, the characters are better. I was in love with Edward, and then I woke up and realizes that he's a condescending Gary Stu. And Bella is a Mary Sue. And I've always hated Jacob. They're all too flimsy. JKR has an entire world of realistic charcters. You love Harry, but you really just want to slap him sometimes. You hate Snape, but then you cry out for him in The Prince's Tale. They're lifelike.
The plots. JKR has spent 17 years making sure she had a solid plot. It was amazing how she wrapped it all together. I mean, she mentioned a locket briefly in the middle of a sentence in OOTP, and then it was a huge key to DH? She's a genius. Then we have Meyer, who just shoved a bunch of things together to make an interesting story. I mean, Jacob is a shapeshifter? Sorry, thats stupid.
Disregarding the books themselves, Twilight will never be Harry Potter. I mean, wizard rock, the HPAlliance. Twilight just doesn't have the strength to support it.
I do love Twilight and Breaking dawn (nothing in between). They're entertaining, and I have a button that says I was bitten by Breaking Dawn on my backpack. But it isn't even a contest. JKR FTW:)

message 31: by Abby (last edited Nov 04, 2008 04:55PM) (new) - added it

Abby O. #1: SM ROCKS UR SOCKS!!! #2: Edward is too perfect because that makes him seem less real??? He's a vampire... he wasn't anywhere near real from the start for those of you who think he's too perfect... #3: JKR's books are way to hard to read! I tried reading them and decided to just watch the movies instead!
Although, I do have to agree that the two authors cannot truely be compared. (I don't care if this is being hipocritical) They have such different writing styles, topics and audiences, they cannot really be compared.

Heidi I love them both! Personally, I'm a die hard Tamora Pierce fan. Their styles are WAY too different to be compared in my opinion!

Janepage I just hate how big headed JK is becoming! Stephanie seems much to down to earth to let this get to her head.

Kerryn Definately Stephenie Meyer, i really love the twilight series and the host. they're the best books ive read in ages. i loved the harry potter story but i never really could get into the harry potter books.. i dont know why but i love the movies they're fantastic.

MarielaBlu I am a huge fan of SM AND JK Rowling both are amazing writers. Both are two of my favorite authors of all TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 36: by Trysh (new)

Trysh I think SM and JK are both wonderful writers.. I tend to lean more toward JK cause I just can't stomach chick flicks.. (LOL) and the Twilight series is just WAY too much of a chick flick. I do love the ability of both writers to take you from reality and drop you into their world. That is the sign of a great writer.

MarielaBlu yes I agree with you, a think a person is a good writer if they can just take me into the story and keep my attention for hours and then have a hard time remebering that its not truely real.

Rebecca Sullivan JK has a better first series, but SM can write more than one bestselling series. Personally, HP is better than Twilight, but I can't speak for The Host. I havem't read it yet.

Claire They both really focus on their characters and scenarios (Rowling with wizards and Meyer with vampires/aliens) but I have to say Meyer really does over do the romance side and Rowling puts just enough in to make the over emotional/romantic teen satisfied while still maintaining a plotline. One thing I have to say about Meyer: her books plots generally suck.

MarielaBlu The Host is really great book it starts off kinda of strange but other than that it really is a attention-graber.

Marina Fontaine J.K. Rowling is a better writer, but Stephenie Meyer is more original. Harry Potter is awesome, but a lot of things are clearly derivative from other sci-fi and fantasy. At some point Orson Scott Card, upset at J.K. Rowling suing the Harry Potter Lexicon website, wrote a scathing column listing all the concepts she "lifted" from his own Ender's Game. Crazy as it sounds, point for point he was right! On the other hand, Meyer took concepts that were done to death (vampires and alien invasion) and literally turned them upside down. She has TONS of potential in terms of creative ideas. What she needs now is develop more on the purely writing skill level, and I believe it will come with time.

BubblesTheMonkey I love them both but JKR is a better writer than SM. She also has better characters than SM.

purplemunchkim Why are we even comparing? I think it's VERY OBVIOUS that JKR is the better writer here. SM did wrote an interesting book and a lot of people did loved it BUT I don't think that is enough of a reason to compare her with JKR and her books. Just sayin'

Claire JK Rowling hands down. a series of 7 with only 1 slightly iffy one. i think they also kicked reading back into play. i am revisiting the films 1 a day leading to the big finally on Friday. the Harry Potter books are a series that the whole family can enjoy and we have. We really just want to know if she's writing again, prequal, sequal, something new, anything really. we just want her to write something. mind you we can say that to SM whats happened to the next 2 book in the Host series? Give them a movie deal and writting seems to go right out the window.

Marina Fontaine @Kerri- here's the link you asked about- Card on J.K. Rowling:

http://hatrack.com/osc/reviews/everyt...

Come to think of it, Card doesn't even mention adults lying to and manipulating the gifted hero to protect him, which in the end backfires in a big way.

Good JK ROWLING

Ashlyn J.K ROWLING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you can't even comapre the two because J.K ROWLING is a better writer, more creative,non-cheesy,her story never get boring and she is more experienced then stephanie meyer!
