Let me just tell you how much I hate group projects.. i think i expressed this in another post..

I get stuck with people who don't do anything..and..well I'm a perfectionist. I'll admit it. So I end up doing everything because I want it done well.

So today..I spend literally all day on a section of our strategic plan..I give my partner 2 little subsections to do..I strategically pick these because I know they are easy to find and won't take long for her. I just get a text telling me that she hasn't started them and she won't have them done for tomorrow because she wants to go to bed because she was gone all day... ughh. I am FURIOUS.

so..what do you all think of group projects..a good thing or a bad thing?

message 2: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I think it depends on the people in your group and the topic.

I am also not a fan of group projects. Most of the time I prefer doing projects on my own.

message 3: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 143 comments hate hate hate them.
I also get stuck with incompetent people who just end up annoying me. It's faster just to get the work done myself.

hmm..maybe I am beginning to be antisocial..haha

message 4: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I hate group projects. I totally agree with you. I'm always the one that does everything, because I don't really trust other people to get things done well. I'm working on a project with a girl right now, and it's really weird, because we're both that kind of person. We both want to take control, but she's getting the stuff done faster than me, so I feel like I'm not helping with anything, and I don't like it...

message 5: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) We have to do a group project in my English class the next couple of weeks...ugh.

message 6: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (kelseynicole) awl i dont get to do projects anymore...

oh and kels..i HATE that..i think that's why sometimes i pick someone to be in my group because i know i can take control haha..it's weird when someone else is the same way.

message 9: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (kelseynicole) haha sometimes its fun though..i remember when i was in school i literally TOOK OVER a project about guns rights and etc..my group was so useless to me. But the fun part was that i got to grade them and vice versa..little to say they failed and i passed =)

hahah nice! i always couldnt stand people who were like "lets just give each other A's"...oh yes..right..that is a great idea..i do all the work..and you get the same grade. Sounds good to me!

message 11: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments Group projects drive me off the wall! I could so much better do the whole project alone in less time then with a number of other people. It is astounding when I actually get a group that works well together!

message 12: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) We got the assignment for our group project and its actually pretty easy. There is actually two parts. Part one is a group presentation on the subtopic of the chapter we were assigned in "Don't Know Much About History" where we have to give a brief summary, tell how the particular part of history affected us today, and finally tell what we learned. The second part is actually are second paper which is a research paper and we can choose any of the sujects/subtopics. I already know which one I am gonna do which writing about Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and how it was so controversial. I did a research paper on this in a history class I took so it will be easy :).

that sounds like a decent project!
is the paper individual or a group effort?

message 14: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) paper is individual effort

ughh..the group presentation thing that I was talking about..got worse. I ended up doing EVERYTHING..and this week we have been meeting as a group because our presentation is on Friday..and this one kid hasn't shown up to ANY of the meetings..at all..he has not a clue as to what we are even talking about for our group project. it's horrible! he didn't even come today after we emailed him several times. So now someone..aka ME..has to take over his part..as if I have time to do that..

group presentations give me migraines!!

so we presented today...

the kid didn't even show up for class. he truly fell off the face of the earth. oh well. we did it..it turned out alot better than I thougth it would be..it really really did. The professor seemed to enjoy it..so i'm glad..and even more glad that it's OVER!

message 18: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I hate people who don't do any work for group projects! Isn't that the best feeling though, when it's all finally over and you don't have to think about it anymore.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
it's horrible when everyone gets the same grade. Why should I do more/better work than others in the group and they get the same grade for doing nothing! Sometimes professors will give you a paper so you can grade the others in your group..i love when that happens.

but..i'm glad its over..and when it came down to it yesterday..we pulled it together right before the class..and i didn't mind the people in my group so much. Now..if we would have done poorly..i would have still been ticked. haha.

message 20: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 143 comments that sounds AWFUL jamie.

i realized through group projects that I don't work well with others. haha.

message 21: by Haley (new)

Haley Walsh (haleymatisse) | 1 comments I'm actually in the middle of doing a group project...by myself. Some people really irritate me when they don't do their work. It's really not going to kill you to do your homework.

Ugh. And I will not accept a bad grade on a project, so I'm stuck here in the middle of the night finishing this project last minute.

!@#$%^&*

aww Haley!! I totally feel your pain..for sure. i had the project from hell last week in which i ended up doing ALL the work because I wanted a good grade. Good luck!! Feel free to rant and rave as much as possible on here..it sure helped me to get it all out so I did not let those unfortunate people in my group get the wrath that i have been known to render once in a while.

ps. Welcome!!

I don't like group projects, and would much prefer to work on my own.

All our professors seem to think this group project idea is the gospel of a good education. It certainly is if the education you are after is there are people that are lazy and ride on others' work. Also, these same people are the ones that are more than willing to take credit for everything. I don't think that is the education they want for us to get from the group.

I have found that if I tell my self that a project isn't a group project even when it is, I feel a little less stress about doing all the work myself.

message 24: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I have to write this 4 page research paper on a current event. I'm gonna do my paper on Prop 8 and how the passing of it has affected people. Easily make 4 pages. :)

My last group project for this semester was finished today! Yay! For some reason, my professor thought groups of 5 or 6 were a good idea and each group does 5 presentations this semester. Have you ever tried to get that many people together on a meeting time? Impossible. I think we accomplished it once.

message 26: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Tami, thats crazy! Professors just don't get that everyone has a life outside of class. It's hard enough trying to coordinate a meeting time for a group of two, let alone 5 or 6!

message 27: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) That is crazy! I hate that profs. think this is a good way to do things. BLAHHH

Mine right now is crazzzzy. AGAIN. I have to do the whole data summary in one night. I get the stats (HOPEFULLY) by 8 tonight. I was supposed to have them yesterday at the latest. And I'm not even going to care about what they want in it. I'm sick of being outvoted.

I am sick of working on the weekends and over breaks. And it wouldn't be a big deal if it were unavoidable. But it's COMPLETELY avoidable. I just have people in my group who insist on doing things the hard way. And the longest possible.

I'm so irritated right now. We've already been given an extension on our extension. It's ridiculous that it's taking this long. We could have been done with, but these people want to take every last bit of time we can and make it last as long as possible.

ughh kate. i feel your pain on that one. good luck!!

i think i am done with any group projects for the year..and hopefully the rest of my life!! haha

message 29: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) =( I got the stats a half hour late and they're gibberish. It was sent to everyone though and the only guy in our group was like, "yeah, I don't think you have much to go on Kate so don't worry about it for now."

I was like, thankyou. At least I'm not the only one who can't make sense of the scribbles. It's prolonging it, but if you saw what I had to work with...yikes.

aww kate :(
why must teachers torture us with group projects!!?? i think that should end once you hit college..i mean..we are busy people!! I need to do things on my own time schedule!

message 31: by kate (new)

kate (katelucia) Yeah!! I thought the whole point was that we got to be our own time managers!! I feel gypped.

Molly (slinkyxo) | 153 comments omg!! i had a similar experience jamie. i DESPISE group projects. why can't people just do what they are supposed to do?? i feel so mean saying this..because i might come off the wrong way..but why are so many people incompetent when it comes to school work?? or maybe it's just laziness! i don't know..but i have only had a few good experiences where we had a group that really jived and got our work done in a fair manner and got a good grade.
