^ | 86 comments I have a paperback 4th printing 1971 of "Below Stairs" by Margaret Powell first issued by Pan Books Ltd, London (UK), in 1970. The ISBN is identical to an edition attributed to Macmillan in the Goodreads database, and the cover is identical.

My Pan published copy states nothing of Macmillan. It only refers to first publication by Peter Davies Ltd in 1968.

Inspiration has not been forthcoming from the Goodreads Librarian Notes attached to the record for Macmillan published ISBN 0330025031.

Now, in 2011, I see Pan and Macmillan have merged at some point in their histories. See
http://www.panmacmillan.com/home/defa... That would explain the acquisition of assets, including a back catalogue of ISBN numbers.

My next thought was to just manually add a new edition (without an ISBN) with the observation of the ISBN in the edition field; together with attaching a Library Note: - however that won't help anyone who performs their initial search by ISBN. So is there a better solution to this predicament?

Please advise.

Many thanks (as ever)

Sandra | 31511 comments Nope, your suggestion is the only one available. The process is exactly the same as an alternate cover edition, as per the librarian manual.

it seems at that point in time it was just Pan Books, until it became a part of Macmillan in 1987.

Catherine (catherineeilers) | 45 comments ISBNs do get reused, but in this case, I think that the publisher's name is simply in error in the book data. If Macmillan has ever published this book, it's not in WorldCat. (There does appear to be a 2011 edition from Pan Macmillan with ISBN 0330535382/9780330535380.) If I were you, I'd just changed the publisher's name to Pan Books and, of course, note the change in the change log.

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments I agree with Catherine in this case, and think it is an error and do not think this needs an Alternate Cover Edition.

First - the image of the cover CLEARLY states Pan Books.

Second - Chuck made a good note about Pan Books becoming part of Macmillan in 1987. The internet did not exist then, and it's likely that older Pan Books were added under Macmillan for ease.

Third - The Amazon entry has changed to Pan Books.

So yes, in this case I think it's okay to update the publisher.

^ | 86 comments AOK. On the edition record for that ISBN I'll change the publisher from Macmillan to Pan & will note the change in the log.

Many thanks
