I think two reads in the same month is fine. I think they should be consecutive, rather than simultaneous. I got the feeling that the two were competing for the same few sets of eyes. Two weeks for the first, then leave it open for stragglers and focus on the second... or, maybe offer a "main read" and an alternate, rather than two full fledged group reads discussed on the same thread?

I don't know if I have strong enough feelings on the question to lean one way or the other too far.

Again, I think that's more reflective of the number of people participating in the group read. The more participants, the more two reads make sense. What was the vote count?

Oh that wasn't the question I was asking. We had two reads because there was a tie, and we didn't have time to do a runoff.

My question was about people nominating a book in a series that isn't the first book.

For example, Jonathan wanted to nominate the second book in the Jack West series after we had read Seven Deadly Wonders.

I wouldn't normally have two group reads in a month except for the fact that there was a tie.

That's a good point though.

Oh, in that case, I'd say, only if we've had a group read of the one before it. (no reason not to continue on in a good series)... as for a book that's not first in a series, I'd say, only if it truly works as a stand alone.

For example, I've been told that Pendergrast III works without reading Relic and Reliquary...

Your welcome.

(It's amazing what new meds can do for your psyche, even when their just Antibiotics to help with a nasty sinus infection! It's got me a little frisky... as you can probably tell if you've read any of the posts I've put up in the past hour.

I knew I shouldn't have asked for the tripple venti at Starbucks. (I know Faith... it's not worth it (sigh) but... it sure tastes good)

A moderator helps to run the group. All those boring, annoying tasks that allow the members to hang out on the group and have fun.

If you look at post number one on this thread, I posted two general moderator duties. If you have any other things you think should be on the list, I will happily add them.

Just letting the other mods know that I am deleting the old group read polls from last year (so it doesn't get too cluttered in the polls section), and I am archiving the old group read and theme nominating polls in the Group Reads Archive. I will leave all the book discussions in the folder until the end of the year, and then archive those. They will not be deleted.

Is it my imagination, or is something going on with Goodreads?

I know they mentioned upgrading things and that it might take "hours" to get things running, but, now it doesn't look like it's working right, or maybe I'm just confused?

message 128: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Literary Adrenaline Junkie (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 5150 comments Mod
There has been some connectivity issues with Goodreads the past couple of days because they are doing some upgrades. So it's not just you, Hugh!

Yea, I'm seeing people with posts (on my update thread) that just come up with numbers...and that's it. And, seems like sometimes things are updating, sometimes I'm sure their not.

Whenever they do a major overhall on GRs, things get wonky.

message 131: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Goodreads is still not working correctly and it's getting a little annoying. I sure hope they correct things soon.

Just a heads up. My laptop modem (or something) crashed and it has chosen to withhold the internet from me. Once we get it to therapy...right now, I'm thinking hammer therapy would be a good thing...for me...

I have some connectivity at work but I may not be around till I get the kink's worked out.

Eileen wrote: "Happy to hear you and your computer both survived the ordeal, Hugh."

We are starting couples therapy as soon as we find someone who's okay with mixed couples. (I made the mistake of telling this joke with my wife. She was on board until she asked "What did you do to fix it?" When she heard my answer, "I just reloaded/restored the settings from a restore point before the problems started." She didn't think it was so funny, "So, you went with a younger version of the same thing huh?" It took me a while to get the connection too... keep thinking about it, it'll come to you.)

Eileen I was thinking about all the great new headers or banners on other Goodread groups. I was wondering if we should do something like that here? I don't have any ideas what should it be, just thought it might be a fun idea. What do you think?

message 147: by The Pirate Ghost, Long John Silvers Wanna-be (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) | 5326 comments Mod
I think it sounds like a great idea (the banner). I say Hell yes...

of course... I don't have any idea how to do it, or what it should be like either? ... something with guns... maybe the 007 jingle they usually run coming back form commercial when a James Bond move pays on TV. You know where bond walks across the screen then turns and fires and the telescoping eye covers with blood then falls.

But then... that hardly covers everything.

message 148: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Of course there will be guns involved. I'll do some research and see what I can find.
