kharis (webkinzfan69) | 1 comments Hey everyone! I'm a student from Indonesia and I've always been fascinated about the histories of other countries. My dream is to ride a subway train and have a huge philately collection. My favorite books are We Are The Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson and All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Hope to be friends with you all! <3

message 3054: by Erin (new)

Erin Hi, I'm Erin - I've been working on a read around the world project since 2018, adding 10-15 new countries per year, so it's going to take me a while (also because I keep adding new places that aren't technically countries to my list! - and seem to 'revisit' places even more than going to new ones...) I'm at about 100 countries now.

I read a lot of translated lit but also about 20% of my reading is in languages other than English.

Rosemarie | 3956 comments Welcome, Erin. I have favourite countries to revisit too.

Kat Medina | 44 comments Hi, my name is Kat Medina. I am an entrepreneur, world traveler, and public speaker, and author of The Joys of Jet Lag: How to Use a Traveler’s Mindset to Not be an A-Hole in Daily Life.

I have traveled to more than 35 countries, and lived in Ecuador, Argentina, France, and Spain. I draw upon my passion for travel to inspire joy in others, teaching people how to show up and live fully by embodying a traveler’s mindset in daily life.

I am a contributing author on Optimal Living Daily and Optimal Relationships Daily podcasts, I have written for TripSavvy and Verywell Family, and was featured in Maynard Webb and Carlye Adler’s New York Times best-seller, Rebooting Work.

I currently live in South Lake Tahoe, California with my husband, two sons, and giant Golden Retriever named Donut.

Do we have anything in common?

Thank you for the warm welcome Rosemarie! When was the last time you went to Europe?

My last trip was to Prague and Germany solo trip with my 5 month old baby. This year I also hope to go to Norway and Sweden with my husband, 2.5 year old, and baby.

message 3059: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 3956 comments My husband and I took an organized tour of Spain and Portugal and spent time on our own in Bilbao, Barcelona and Coimbra.
Travelling with a toddler and a baby will be an adventure.
This year we're going to Switzerland on a tour that focusses on mountains and trains-two of my favourite things.

message 3062: by Germán (new)

Germán (german1138) Hi all, hope you doing good! I'm Germán, I'm 23yo and I'm from Argentina. Usually I like to read fiction books but nowadays I'm trying to get into non-fiction genre; started with one from Jaron Lanier about social media and with Sapiens of Harari. If you've any other recommendation would be welcome !

At the same time I'd like to ask, have any of you had any problem lately with goodreads? or the way they manage communities/groups? I'd like to know if is there any common issue.

Thanks!

message 3063: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie | 3956 comments Hi, German! I'm generally happy with goodreads-it's a fun place for me.

Elizabeth Wunder | 1 comments To give my passion for reading a jumpstart after years of dormancy due babies and homeschooling. I started the year off challenging myself to read one book from different regions of the US. Books for me, and not the kids schooling! In four months, that has turned into reading over 100 books from 23 states and 6 countries. Now the goal is to read from every state and every continent. This has been such a fun adventure. From the Carolina coast, to Denali, and Brazil to Nigeria. I can't wait to findreccomendations for further adventures.

Angkhan | 1 comments Hello All,
I'm from Thailand. My grandfather was British. My parents are both Thai. I'm in the UK just now studying history at university. My passion is to travel, but at present I'm basically penniless and for now will read my way around the world.

message 3078: by Bianca (new)

Bianca | 2 comments Hello Everyone,

I'm in Glasgow, Scotland. Thank you for letting me join your group. I'm now reading every night. The TV went out the window (not literally - I'm not strong enough for that). The library here is free to join - yippee. I'm trying to read travel, history, historical fiction and thrillers - I'm hoping to find fact-based thrillers/suspense.

Also, please be my friend. I have a room, unfortunately, in a very rough neighbourhood and socialising is no longer in the day-planner.

message 3079: by Mitch (new)

Mitch I'm harboured up in the Welsh Valleys. I work outdoors, mostly on farms, walling, fencing, and general repair work. I was a focused on my rugby, but a knee injury has put me on the sidelines for good. In the off-seasons, when finance allowed, I took to the mountains: mostly Asia and the Himalayas. I took to reading whilst recovering from my surgery. It's becoming a big thing. As one door closes, another door opens.

message 3085: by Mark (new)

Mark | 1 comments Hi to everyone.

I'm a surveyor, I own a sea kayak, live within a stone's throw of the briny and luckily work in coastal surveying.

I yearn for fiction that asks me think: join-the-dots, figure what is happening, where the plot is taking me.

message 3086: by Dottie (last edited Aug 30, 2024 06:52AM) (new)

Dottie | 1 comments I'm Dottie (not in my head).
I’m trying every day to be kind to the world we live in and wish to read about those things that touch the world we live in. I don’t do paranormal, sci-fi, romance, fantasy, role-play, etc: you get the picture.
I'm not an eco-zealot. I'm not at all interested in screaming and shouting about what's wrong, whilst throwing litter all over the place and running off. A few years back, I spent the day listening to Greta Thunberg, when she left so did the crowd: a sea of litter was left behind. From that day on, I've lived a simple life: reuse, repair, recycle. I grow my own. I use solar power whenever possible. I don't buy new clothes. I don't use make-up. I cycle everywhere. I'm self-employed and work making and repairing clothes: mostly for the little ones. Take an old coat, clean it and sew a few flowers on: like magic, it's new and can be sold at the farmer's market. I don't buy new books. I use the library or buy second-hand from the market. My table is next to the bookman's and we get on like a house on fire. And just like my grandparents did, who both kept their wits and lived to a fine old-age, I don't do heating. I do an extra jumper.

message 3087: by Leo (new)

Leo Anthony (authorshow7000954leo_anthony) | 5 comments Hi. My name is Leo. This looks like my sort of group. I have travelled and lived in many places, since not long after I was born really. So perhaps it's not surprising that I would have an affinity for a group like this. Look forward to reading your book recommendations and sharing a few of my own...

I was born in the UK, grew up Africa (Zimbabwe/Rhodesia formerly) and have lived both in the UK and latterly Germany in the last 15 years. I'm now 45 yo.

Have just read:

The Solitary Elephant and other stories by Jay Wood which very curiously is not on Goodreads. I'll try and rectify that. It very much enjoyed it. Short stories from San Francisco student days to Kerala India in recent times. The latter setting is where the story begins. Very poignant. You can find it on Smashwords https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

Also recently read The Shadow of the Sun which must surely rank as one of the best bits of journalistic memoir on Africa from the last century. Kapuscinski was a true adventurer and master stroryteller. Also highly recommend his final work Travels with Herodotus

I'm heading south as soon as I can. I've stopped going out in the evenings: where I'm living, it's not safe.

Books are where I'll be for the foreseeable. Making friends would be good for me.

message 3097: by Vicky (last edited Sep 05, 2024 06:40AM) (new)

Vicky | 1 comments I'm Vicky, the apprentice cobbler. In three years I'll be a qualified (junior) shoemaker. The father of my dad's old army buddy is the craftsman. If I work hard and stick at it, I'll be fully qualified in seven years. I first walked into his shop when I was 12 and that is all I've ever wanted to be. I work as a waitress four evenings a week so as to keep my head above water.
My life is: shoes, food, books. And sleep.
