Hi, Tamara,
I have read a few books on Shackleton's Antarctic expedition. South: The Endurance Expedition is Shackleton's own account. I also recommend Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing and Endurance by Frank A. Worsley. Another book I have been wanting to read is The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard, a member of the Scott expedition.

I am interested in people's experiences of the cold. Why they braved it, what they saw and so on."
It’s not a new book, but Dr. Nielsen’s account of her experience as the Antarctic’s only medical doctor is an eye-opening account of life on the most challenging place to live on the planet. Her reasoning for accepting the assignment, planning, preparation, and insight to survival are exemplary. I was completely captivated by her every story.
Ice Bound: A Doctor's Incredible Battle for Survival at the South Pole by Jerri Nielsen

I am Lincee and I love travel, food and learning. I published my first book and am learning how to navigate this literary landscape. I never thought it would be such an emotional and mental rollercoaster. Anyone else feel this way? My gym workouts and resistance to chocolate are my biggest challenges. I have to pray every day otherwise I will stuff my face with chocolate and cry at the gym.

In terms of books to cold places - a couple that stick in the mind are Farthest North by Fridtof Nansen, a Norwegian explorer who took his ship the Fram to the Artic circle, intending to get it stuck in the ice and float to the North Pole. The book is his account of this journey. It’s hard going at times (style of its time) but you definitely start to understand the incredibly hard conditions he endures during his exploration.
Benedict Allen - Into the Abyss - a journey in Siberia. He’s a current British explorer/traveller and has a very accessible style. You should also be able to find video footage of him.
And I want to read Fatal Passage by Ken McGoogan about Dr John Rae, who was from the Orkney islands in Scotland and was an Artic expert living in Canada. He investigated the disappearance of the Franklin expedition (they were looking for the Northwest Passage) but the family of Sir John Franklin did not like his findings and set out to discredit him.
Hope that helps - sounds like a good course!
Sarah

I guess now it’s my turn.
I’m so happy that I found this group! Reading and traveling- couldn’t be better :)
I come from Germany, I’m married and we’ve a dog- my other passion. Further I love green tea, harmony and nature (especially forests and mountains), I like running, hiking, kayaking and yoga.
My reading goal for 2023 is reading more books in English to improve my English skills.. Hope it works :) We’ll see…
I read almost every genre, except erotic literature and kitschy love stories.
If you think, we’re interested in the same kind of books, you can add me, I like looking around other bookshelves.
And if you’re learning German, we could read books together and learning from each other.
🧳 Happy traveling 🧳

I retired recently and I'm thrilled to have so much time to read. I've spent the last few decades primarily reading nonfiction for my work as a Health and Life Coach and I wanted to reconnect with reading for fun.
This year I set my goals around reading a variety of genres. I picked 6 fiction and 6 nonfiction genres and set a goal to read 2 books from each. I have one book left to complete that goal. I also joined another GR book club that had a Genre of the Month Challenge and I've read 4 books each month to complete each of those challenges.
After seeing several posts about reading the world I decided that would be my long-term reading goal. I've decided to read 2 books, 1 fiction and 1 nonfiction from each of the 195 countries. I expect this will take me a few years since I also want to other books on my reading list while working on the challenge.
With nearly 400 books to research and select, I'm glad to see that there are several challenges in this group that may help me narrow down my focus so I don't get overwhelmed.

Enjoy your book journey!

Hi Dani, I'm a resident of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean. I'd love to be friends. I speak French, English, Hindi, and Spanish. Hope you read a book from my country, even if there is not a lot of choice!

I was in Germany for three weeks in August and September in the northern part of Germany and loved it.
My first trip out of Canada since Covid.

I’m another Canadian and travel lover. In my first career, I lived and worked around the world (Australia, Nigeria, Oman, Switzerland, and of course, Canada). Now I write about some of these places and more. My first couple of books were no fiction travel. Now I have moved into the world of fiction.
Hopefully I can include this as part of my intro - my next release will fit into the Malta category where the story is based. It’s a mystery suspense novel:

Be It So First Series

I’m currently reading a book set in Montana (while not a country, pretty sure it’s the first book I’ve read set in that state) and I just finished some excellent books, one set in Morocco and one set in Portugal.
Looking forward to finding some new books to read!

Hi, Penelope! Welcome to the group! Are there any books from Gibraltar you can recommend?

Hi Theresa, just take it one book at a time. Happy to have you in the group!

And, well, after all said and more importantly; Shaheen Shiraz Sultan is a renaissance nomad who lost her caravan at Al-Andalus, Spain. She is often seen with her typewriter and guitar - sipping qahwa (coffee) at old bazaars and penning her (perpetual) manuscript !
Cheers.

Though I really enjoy fiction, I am hoping to read a lot of non-fiction this year, Islamic, Financial and Productivity-based. Pleasure joining the group.

I'm Anouk, 32, from Belgium. I like the outdoors and my favorite country I've traveled to is Norway: simply stunning.
I love to read travel stories and get to know different perspectives and places. Lately, I seem to be on a memoir kick, but I'm looking forward to diving into some of the recommendations here.
I don't really have many friends who like to read a lot, so I'm happy to foster new connections!
Have a nice day everyone,
Anouk
