Welcome to the group, Andrew! Nothing beats real travel, but traveling through books is the next best thing.
Oma wrote: "Hi! I am Oma and I'm very happy to be here with so many friends!"Hi, Oma! Welcome to the group!
Hi Mome_Rath! Well, it's a small world! I didn't expect to find anyone on here that I'd 'met' before! I'm impressed that you even remember my old blog. That was so many years ago. It's taken quite some time to write a book worth reading (at least, I hope it is worth reading!) Hiking 7,000-miles was far easier!
I appreciate the welcome from Rosemarie, George P., and Diane as well! Thank you.
Diane, yes - real travel does beat traveling through books. Or, does it? Reading (or writing!) a travel book can be a profoundly deep journey, and perhaps, arguably, a more thoughtful journey - given that it can be done more slowly, without the action and immediacy of physical travel.
I wonder if the comparison is worth a whole discussion thread!
hey! i'm ibana from maldives. so excited to find this group because i'm trying to diversify my reading habits as much as i can these days. very into arabic literature currently, like mahmoud darwish etc if anyone has any recommendations for nonfiction lit from around the world, id love that! especially poetry.
Emily wrote: "JD wrote: "Hi, I am John, a travel writer who specializes in the battlefields of Europe and the things to see and do around them, I'm always on the look out for books about the esoteric and unusual..."Yep agreed. Third class book. Avoid it . You have been warned!

Welcome to the group! There are lots of great poetry books from around the world. I will have to start a list.
Do you have any authors you can recommend from Maldives?
Hi,
I'm Jenny - I may have joined this group before and left, because I didn't participate much, but between Covid and my medical history I find myself travelling through books more. I also do some reading challenges over on Litsy that last the year - this year I'm travelling through Asia and next year it's Africa. I live in Dorset, England.

Hi, Jenny! Glad to have you back! Let me know if you get stuck on finding any books for Asia.
Hello, I'm John and I live in Austin, TX. I've been fortunate to travel around many parts of the world and enjoy learning about and experiencing new places. Probably makes sense since I'm a cultural anthropologist. I'm also an author and just published a book that sort of, kind of, deals with travel. It's a bit of an anthropological memoir about my experiences in Japan and elsewhere--but mostly Japan. Looking forward to reading posts hear and learning about the experiences/reads of others in the group.
Hi everyone, I'm new to the group, just started recording what I read by country in an effort to continue to diversify what I read. I travel a lot to east Africa for work and have particularly enjoyed learning more about the history and culture of place I travel through reading. I have also participated in the Read Harder challenge from Book Riot for the past few years.
Looking forward to contributing and hearing suggestions from others!
-Lauren
Welcome to the group Lauren! Please forgive me for being so bold, but I see that you travel to East Africa. Do you have suggestions for books on Djibouti, particularly on the history and culture?
Hi, I'm Elaine an American ex-pat living in Italy. My book "EIGHT EUROPEAN CITIES ,,AND ME talks about my travels in these eight fantastic cities. Lots of interesting information and some that "could only happen to me" experiences! I'm on Amazon ebooks and there's a list of my other books on Goodreads.Hope to hear from you. elainemaryb@yahoo.it
I can send a pdf copy for an honest review.
Grazie in advance!

Hi I am in Chennai in South India. Used to travel a lot before the pandemic. Now look forward to reading books recommended and discussed in this group. And gain from the interactions.
I wish I could travel more but yeah I want to respect covid. I haven’t been reading too many travel books but I have them on my list.

Hi. My name is Monique, I live in the UK, love reading books from other countries. I’ve read lots of books from other countries and am looking forward to reading lots more in 2022.
Hello everyone! I'm Amos and I live in London, UK & work in publishing. As a younger person, I especially liked reading Russian and Ukranian literature but I'm now keen to consciously broaden my geographical reads and learn of great new reads from your recommendations. :)
Hello! As a mom of four, I started pandemic gardening on the advise of my sons who wanted to grow something in the backyard, and now I have a new hobby, and lots of fresh vegetables. Hiking and gardening provides me lots of opportunities to explore audiobooks and have grown to love them just as I learned to love my Kindle.
I’ve been lurking for about a year and decided to join a group challenge this year as motivation to read more. I do tend to lean toward reading non-fiction - autobiography, biography, history, political campaigns, Western Civilization, Korea (North & South) history, inventors, religions, and science. My fiction reads tend to be thrillers, suspense, a touch of fantasy, and historical fictions.
Look forward to sharing and discovering books from fellow ATW80 members.
Diane, thank you for keeping this group tidy and organized. I’ve been awestruck how you keep the board moving along and doing it all on your own. Well done!
Happy New Year to all!
Hello :) I am Adie from the UK and have rediscovered my love for reading during the lockdown. My favourite genres are Memoirs, Sociology, psychology and wellbeing, Graphic Novels and I am always looking to discover new books to read..
Hello everyone! I just discovered goodreads groups and decided to join here. Last year I challenged myself to read more, especially a wider variety of books. So I decided to try to read my way around the world, especially as we can't travel these days
Genre isn't so important, nor is fiction/non-fiction, but I'm aiming for writers FROM those countries rather than anglophone writers setting their books IN those countries.
Can't wait to join this journey with you all!
Thought I'd say hi, as I'm a member of this group, but to-date, not so active on Goodreads ... I'm an author of two books, Torrents of Our Time, and The Fiddler in the Night. My third book, Love, Guns and God in America, will be coming out in the spring. I'm a former columnist and fiction editor at the Prague Review. So yeah, hi, and hope all are well?
Hello all, I'm Elizabeth and a stay-at-home mom from central Alabama. I stumbled across this group by accident during a Google search for reading challenges for 2022. After reading a bit of the threads and the challenges, I decided to join.
Rosemarie wrote: "Hi, Elizabeth. Welcome to the group. I joined in 2016 and haven't looked back."
Thanks, Rosemarie! I saw this and the options for completing the challenge and immediately thought of the old 19th century grand tours... this could be such fun!

Hi everyone! I’m Angela, from the Philippines and I live in Viet Nam. I’ve been on GoodReads for a long time but only became active this year. I’m a voracious reader and usually go through phases of reading a genre/topic. This time though, I’m trying to take breaks as it can sometimes be overwhelming to keep reading about animal conservation or genocide. My time in Tanzania brought certain issues closer to my heart and mind. Excited to have reading challenges and goals as I don’t often know enough people who have tastes as eclectic as mine.
Hi everyone! I'm Lisa. I live in Canada and teach grade 2/3. I love to travel and read... and have been trying to read a book set in every country as a lifelong goal. I'm in awe of those of you reading 80 books a year! My goal is 12 new countries a year.I guess that makes me a "circumnavigator"? Once I figure out how this group works, I'm looking forward to finding more new books and chatting with you all.
Hi, Lisa. Welcome to the group. I live in Canada and am a retired teacher, but I taught in middle school.
Rosemarie wrote: "Hi, Lisa. Welcome to the group. I live in Canada and am a retired teacher, but I taught in middle school."Hi Rosemarie. Thanks for the welcome! I've also taught middle school, but am back to the little ones now.
