David Moore | 13 comments Turning Left Around the World

Hi, My wife and I have recently returned from a 10 month adventure around the world visiting 15 countries as varied as the Amazon Jungle, New Zealand vineyards, the Atacama Desert, The Galapagos, Easter Island, Myanmar, and as they say, many more.

I wrote along the way and so the book of the adventure, ‘Turning Left Around the World’ is published by Mirador and available for pre-order on Amazon.

It is, I hope, an engaging account of our adventure, often intriguing, frequently funny and occasionally tragic.

Many thanks
David

Hi there! This is Lucas, a language teacher living in Chile at the moment. I tend to read mostly in English and Spanish, but I'm trying to do so in French as well. Recently I've developed an obsession with world literature so I thought this group would be nice for me.

Razvan Rogoz | 2 comments Hi!

My name is Razvan. I'm 27, a business consultant by trade and a huge book nerd. I'm actually traveling around the world (been doing this for almost three years) but I'll have to stop it soon enough.

So while I'm taking a pause from traveling, I want to inspire myself to discover new places and new adventures :)

Hello to you too Diane. Thank you. It took me years to convince myself, to find the courage to do this, facing fears and dangers that never came true.

H. Dalloway (hdalloway) | 2 comments Hey Hey
H. Dalloway here. European by birth :)

Bored with the normative, love the unconventional. Tired of the common, smitten with the odd and different. Drained by stereotypes and of long term exposure to unoriginality , longing for the innovative and the absurd, whimsical, imaginative and queer...

And yeah. I'm reading science fiction novels from all around the world. Everything science fiction you could think of, from every little place on the planet you could think of.

But I need help finding the good stuff. So If you guys have some time, and some knowledge about some intriguing sci-fi book from Taiwan, Venezuela, Tanzania or Iceland. Wherever. Please share it with me.

The book doesn't have to be super rare or anything, but if it is on the everyday top 100 best science fictions novel list, then I have already read it. It can be old stuff or totally new. It's as Shakira says it: Whenever, wherever...

And by the way, this group is awsome! I have already found so much help in my quest.

Diane | 13052 comments Hi, H., Welcome to the group and thank you for your kind words. I have been seeing more and more international/translated sci-fi. I started a list of translated sci-fi/fantasy on the bookshelf. It doesn't include the books originally published in English, though.

Here is the list so far:

message 2432: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 51 comments Hello everyone,
my name is Jessica, I'm 31 and live in Germany. I grew up with two cultures, German and French, and have lived in Germany and France as well as England, which has opened my eyes on how different cultures can be, even between neighbouring countries.
Because of my studies, I already have lots of contact with English and French literature (also from ex-colonies), but there are so many more countries I would like to visit through reading, and also in real.
I've been reading ever since I learned to do so, and I have probably read every genre there is, though at the moment I prefer paranormal, fantasy, romance. What I particularly like is reading books (and then not necessarily in the genres mentioned) about different cultures or social minorities in a country, because - that's my opinion - they can open your eyes on ongoing problems better than natives can.
I hope I can get to learn some nice people here and can take part in some really exciting challenges.

I grew up (and still live in) a town near Cape Town, but I studied at the University of Iowa and have traveled extensively in the USA and Europe. I just love the texture and feel of new places - it makes one feel move alive. My novels are either set in South Africa or central Africa.

Val (coffeelant) Hello! My name is Valeria and I like to read. I've been wanting to pick up books that are different than my experiences so that I am able to learn about other cultures and other experiences. I also like to travel and the last place I visited was Spain, where I spent 6 weeks for a study abroad program for my old University. In December, I am going to Seattle with my partner for our anniversary. It's the first time for both of us, so we're really excited. I am happy to be here and I can't wait to experience different books and cultures by joining this group.

Ashley (readerandwriter) | 1 comments Hello everyone ! Happy holidays ! My name is Ashley and I’m a 32 year old woman who lives in Georgia but has California roots . I love to read . I haven’t been reading in the past several months but I am trying to get back into it . I recently have a big interest in non fiction especially about different place around the world and within the US , mainly because I’ve been watching the history channel and learning about different things and abandoned places around the world etc . A big inspiration was something about Egypt and how there can still be cities buried under the sand . So I got a book called “The Mummy”: A History of the Extraordinary Practices of Ancient Egypt “ by E.A. Wallis Budge.

Anyways that’s who I am and look forwards to discussing my nonfiction reads with you .
