Introductions

As for the introduction : the Netherlands is my home, I'm working as a translator (French) since a couple of months, I spent the last six years studying Francophone literature. Currently looking for a PhD position or for a more exciting job than translating (athough I am not yet sure what this new job might actually look like).
There is a lot of information and inspiration in this group, I'll figure out how it works along the way I suppose. Can't wait to get started with the challenge in 2018 :)

Hi, Malou! Welcome to the group. Let me know how I can help you along the way.

I' m Sweetly ( pen name - Sarah) from India. I am an entrepreneur by passion in Medical Field - UK based for the past 12 years and by profession I am a teacher. I am an avid reader of books.
I am basically here as a flashlight to help my best pal. Also I am here to learn a lot from all established authors and their esteemed works.
I do plan to eventually come out with a self-published book in Children's Literature in November of 2018 and an enchanting and thought-provoking script that has the potential to be made into a movie. I enjoy gardening and I am currently pursuing a new hobby knitting.
Looking forward for help and guidance.
:-)

Hi, Hannah! Welcome to the group! I hope you discover many new books.

Nice to meet you all and looking forward to making new friends.

Hi, Robert! Welcome to the group! What a cool job you have!

Hi, Sweetly! Welcome to the group!

Hi, Cheryl! Welcome to the group! So glad you have jumped right in and started a challenge!

I'm so excited to see this group is up and running. The latest member before me posted 2 days ago and was responded 2 minutes within his post is a good sign!
I love to read anything I haven't read.
And once I'm able to travel, I like to do it culturally. One of the stuff you do to get to know local culture is reading their daily newspaper, or grab a book or two by their local writer!
So anyway, I will be in Jedda-Madina-Mecca from 28th Feb to 7th March (Insya Allah). I know it will be a religious journey but I don't see why not I'm still doing the habluminannas while doing the habluminallah. I promise you, I'm just going to buy the good read and read if afterward after the religious trip is done.
So, anyone from the area? Can anyone recommend me a good writer, a good book, a good bookshop to buy it?

Hi, Ade! Welcome to the group! Enjoy your pilgrimage in Saudi.

hI,
I'm Jenny, based in the UK and aged 27 - I have been stalking this group for a while now as I am taking part in a similar challenge on Litsy so came here for ideas!
However I now find I can't resist doing the World Cup of Books 2018 challenge so thought I'd better introduce myself!
I love fantasy and mystery novels, but my all time favourite genre has to be historical mysteries set between 1688-1830 as my Masters degree was in this period.

Hi, Jenny! Welcome to the group! I love historical mysteries, too. I wish there were more set during that time period.

Hi Rachel Anne! Welcome to the group! Glad to have you join a challenge.

I am a sophomore who hated reading books all her life but loved to hear about stories and learn from them. Though I am not fond of putting myself in a tight spot, in order to get myself prepared for college and cure my hate of reading books, I joined my high school’s book club and forced myself to read everyday.
I believe I do have a very simple mind but that’s okay.
I want to see how this simple mind will face the world over time. Hmmm... I do not feel quite comfortable revealing myself online so I’ll just make it clear here that I hate questions that are personal, but perhaps I’ll bring it up myself.
I guess that’s it :)

Hi, Charito! Welcome to the group! I applaud you for confronting your dislike of reading by joining a book club and, well, reading. I think the more you read, the more enjoyable it becomes. I encourage you to explore different genres and find the type of books that will help you discover a love of reading.

I'll add just a little more to the diverse mix here, having been conceived in Spain and delivered nine months later in a US hospital (long time ago) by my Spanish mother minutes from an immigrant corner of Newark, New Jersey known as the Ironbound, where I lived until I got married, started having cats (first), then kids, then, wow, grandkids?
So, yes, it does go too fast (life) and there's no point wasting time. Love books, love holding them in my hands, reading them, love people (even the ones I think I don't sometimes...)
Nice group. I'm feeling right at home here :-)

Hola Ramon! Great to have you here in the group! Life does go by too fast. Too many books to read, too little time.

For 2018, I've already gone to:
England
Greenland
Japan
Russia
United States of America

Hi, Greg! Welcome to the group!

Hi, Doug! I am originally from Maine. What part of Maine are you from? I have to agree that tea is a perfect companion to reading.

Hi Diane,
I live in Southern Maine, Eliot to be exact; right over the border from Portsmouth, NH. I'm originally from New Jersey but I've been up here for 25 years and don't plan on ever leaving!

I know exactly where that is. I have lived in several towns along coastal Maine, but mostly lived Downeast. The farthest south I lived was probably Biddeford, but that was when I was when I was very young and I don't remember it. I am down in GA now and really miss Maine.

Hi, Emi! Welcome to the group!

I've just mapped 203 countries (197 formally recognised +) and would love to find a book for every country. It's a long-term plan and I don't expect to achieve it within 4 years.

Hi, Peter! You are from my favorite place in the world. Let me know how I can help you find books for your quest.

Thanks for the welcome. I've never been to Georgia in the US, but I've been told that part of the world is beautiful to live.

That's an amazing challenge to give yourself for your least favourite genre. I wish you all the best. I've just listed 207 countries in the world if it helps https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

Yikes! I thought there were only 194 countries but I guess what's another 13 at that point. Thanks for the link Peter.
I don't dislike non-fiction, except self-help books it's just a bit dry and it's what I had to read for 6 and a half years thanks to uni. So I've mostly read fiction since finishing but now I'm at a point where I feel I should know more, yet I don't. My knowledge is limited in that I know about the Spanish civil war but not really. Or I know about the colonial wars throughout Africa but not really. And the list goes on. So I thought I'd pick something of interest about each country, most likely historical, and give it a read. For each country before I read I'm going to write down everything I know, with the exception of the USA (my birth nation) and the UK (my adopted residence) cos I imagine it won't be much. My goal, like yours, is a long term one.

Great idea to learn more and I look forward to following your progress. Hopefully, you'll educate me as you go along :)

Hi, Keli! Welcome to the group! A non-fiction book from every country is quite a challenge, but very doable. It actually is probably easier to find non-fiction than fiction in some of the smaller nations.

What a great challenge. There are some really great options out there that most certainly aren't dry. Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity for India, Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea for North Korea, We Are All the Same: A Story of a Boy's Courage and a Mother's Love for South Africa, and The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon and The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey for Brazil come immediately to mind. Good luck as you set off on this challenge!

Thanks for the great suggestions. I have Nothing to Envy, my husband said it was really good. In fact, I'll probaby luck out around the house cos all he reads are mainly non-fic.

I have registered here ages ago but never really got around to doing the challenge until now.
If I start as a Tourist do I still have to start from Australia? And can I add books I have finished reading early on in the year?

Hi, Irene! I can totally relate to loving reading and hating housework. At the Tourist level you don't need to start in your home country, and you can count any books read in 2018.
Hi all! I am Lisa A, reside in the US and recently joined the group. Historical fiction is a favorite genre of mine, so I thought I might pick up on some reading suggestions here.

Hi, Lisa! Welcome to the group! Historical fiction is my favorite, too, along with literary fiction.
Diane- I edited the above comment, as I decided not to do the USA challenge since I don't (currently) have books on my tbr that would work. However, since the Rogue Traveler is fairly open ended, I'll do that instead. I plan to catch up on my individual posts for each book this weekend.
Book-a-neer and Diane, I am not a huge housework fan either, but someone has to do it. I call those types of chores "redistributing dust," as that's all I feel I am doing sometimes.

Hi Peter, about 10 yrs ago I realized that 90% of the books I had read were from US or British writers and decided to read more by writers from other countries. Eventually I started keeping a list. When I finish God's Bits of Wood (Senegal) in the next week, I'll be at 45 countries. Next up: Zimbabwe and Greece. Maybe we could share our favorites from the "less-read" countries.
By the way, I just read Room by Irish writer Emma Donoghue (my 8th Irish writer) and I'll read Irishman John McGahern's That They May Face The Rising Sun very soon, so the Irish writers are a favorite for me now- 10 years ago I had only read Dracula and Gulliver's Travels by Irish writers.

My name is Jacinta and until recently, I was a high school lit teacher in Massachusetts. I've taken some time off to be a mom, but I do miss discussing literature on a regular basis! Before I left my position, I taught American and world literature. This group seems like a great opportunity to expand my horizons and discover more works to add to my world lit curriculum in the future. And for now, it's an exciting opportunity to discuss what I'm reading with anyone older than four months old (although, don't get me wrong, I love Click, Clack, Moo!). I look forward to reading with you all.
