Amanda (amaflynn) | 24 comments Hi, I live in Northern California and I'm starting my art teaching credential and taking some time off of work. I've had a lot of time to read lately and I'm attempting to do a 40 book challenge this year. However I began in June, so we'll see if I make my goal. In the previous two years I've been focusing on teaching and read very little for my own pleasure. So here I am rectifying that and to add to my goal, I will try to write about what I read. I'm new to online book groups, and really excited about the potentiality of having good conversations about our books!

Thank you and regards.

Hi, Kathleen! Welcome to the group. You can post about your book in the Advertisements and Self-Promotion folder. Also, if your book has a specific setting, you may also post it under the folder for that country or state.

I love travelling and I do travel quite a bit. I love reading, mostly classics like Jane Austen's, Chinese novels, history-related non-fiction books and travel literature. Paula Bardell-Hedley (gaiabird) Hello all, I am Paula from North Wales and enjoy reading a wide variety of books, but especially Literary Fiction and serious (as opposed to celeb etc.) Biography. I am hoping to join in your 2018 challenges - I expect I'm rather too late for anything this year. Look forward to chatting with you!

Kirsty (kirstyonbooks) | 68 comments Hello everyone! I've been lurking for quite a while, but have finally decided that I have enough time to take part in the Around the World in 80 Books Challenge during 2018, and thought I would familiarise myself with the group and its members. I am currently a second year PhD student in English Literature, and am very much looking forward to talking to you all.

message 2268: by Paula (new)

Paula Bardell-Hedley (gaiabird) Hello Kirsty. Good to see you've joined the group. I'm a relative newby around here, too. This certainly looks like an excellent challenge in which to sink our teeth. Good luck!

message 2269: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyonbooks) | 68 comments It's lovely to see you here too, Paula! I'm so looking forward to seeing which countries you're going to be travelling to. Do you have any picks in mind already?

message 2270: by Paula (new)

Paula Bardell-Hedley (gaiabird) I rather enjoy a mystery tour, so no definite plans at the moment. How about you? Have you started selecting countries?

message 2271: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty (kirstyonbooks) | 68 comments Oh, that sounds great! I tend to dwindle away from challenges around the middle of the year unless I have a list to work from, so I've made a tentative list of eighty countries and choices I'd like to read. I may change a few of them if they prove difficult to get hold of, but I'm quite happy with it as it stands.

message 2272: by Paula (new)

Paula Bardell-Hedley (gaiabird) Great stuff! I look forward to following your geographical progress.

To be entirely honest I haven't read a lot by NZ authors. I also tend to read only non-fiction, of which Anne Salmon's The Trial of the Cannibal Dog and Michael King's Penguin History of New Zealand both come highly recommended for history buffs.

Vicky Hunt (vickyahunt) | 244 comments Hello! I'm Vicky and I love reading books about geographical cities, regions, and civilizations, both old and new. One of my favorite was Istanbul: City of Majesty at the Crossroads of the World. I'm currently reading and loving The Origins of Political Order: From Prehuman Times to the French Revolution.

Have you read Orhan Pamuk's book about Istanbul and his childhood there?

Tim Notier | 7 comments Hello everyone!
I grew up just west of Chicago and for the first 32 years of my life, and I rarely explored more than an hour away from the hospital I was born in. But now things have changed! I sold all of my possessions, and traded my behind-the-desk job for a full time behind-the-handlebars of a motorcycle adventure around the world, writing a few books along the way.

Hello Tim! Welcome to the group! Wow! What a great adventure you have embarked upon. What parts of the world have you explored and what other areas do you plan to go to?

Tim Notier | 7 comments Diane wrote: "Hello Tim! Welcome to the group! Wow! What a great adventure you have embarked upon. What parts of the world have you explored and what other areas do you plan to go to? .."

My fiancée, Marisa, and I are currently in Colima, Mexico. We spent the last 3 months riding from Chicago, almost straight west to Cali, down through Baja, and ferried into mainland. The World is our limit. We are trying to dive into different cultures and experience places with the necessary time it takes to do so. Being on a motorcycle, and camping often, we get to submerge into places pretty well. Thank God Marisa knows Spanish, or this would be much more difficult.

We are enjoying the ride so far, keeping a blog at https://www.notiersfrontiers.com/ (not a shameless plug, but if your interested, we would love for you to peek into our lives).

I wrote a book about our first short venture into the states that was our test to see if the world was really something of interest. Spoiler alert, it was successful.. I've been keeping some journals, and if anyone thinks my writing style is any good from my first book, I will give a shot at another book covering some of the places we have been.
Maiden Voyage The Prequel to The Adventure of a Lifetime by Tim Notier
Overall exciting stuff for me and my wife-to-be... Homeless (by choice), unemployed (by choice), and a new author! The best decisions I've ever made in my life!

Thank you for the warm welcome,

Tim Notier

Inkeri Hi!

My name is Inkeri and I live in Finland. I've been studying for the past two years and haven't really had time to read other than school books. I'm almost done with my studies and I've decided to get back to reading next year.

I've been browsing the groups here on Goodreads to find books to read and to get excited about them again. I enjoy reading and traveling, and when I saw this group I thought I had finally hit the jackpot!

I'm sure I'll have a ball with all of you guys!

George P. | 116 comments Welcome Inkeri. I have a Goodreads friend in Finland (Mia) who reads a lot of classic books. I read a book by Finnish writer Sophie Oksanen earlier this year (Puhdistus or Purge) and I've read The Unknown Soldier by Linna. The Year of the Hare by Paasilinna is on my to-read list.

Hey George! And thanks for the welcome.

I'm glad to hear you've read some of our Finnish classics. Finland is such a small and a remote country that it always suprises me a little when people know it, but you've even gotten to know our culture through books. That's awesome!

Did you like The Unknown Soldier? It's one of my favorite classics I was "forced" to read at school.

Nicholas Kontis (wwwgoodreadscomnicholaskontis) | 2 comments When I was 24 I took a back pack and headed to Greece for what was to be a two month trip, 13 months later I returned to my native San Francisco with not a job prospect in sight. So, I created a job in travel by starting the first travel agency at the time specializing in discount around the world airfares. Now as a travel writer and author I preach traveling the right way by immersing into local society.
As 36% of Americans have passports, it's a small audience who will like a book on experiential travel.
I'm sure if I can say this here, but I'll mention it anyway, as I'm meaning to do anything wrong.

I'm running another FREE Kindle Amazon download days promotion

Next Monday & Tuesday - December 18 & 19
