Jacob Sebæk | 15 comments Thx Diane. Kurban Said/Lev Nussimbaum indeed had an interesting life, short as it was though. But "The Orientalist" is much more than his life story. It is as much a geopolitical trip on a time machine, that among a lot of other things throws light on the current conflict in The Caucasus area. Really worth the reading.

Brina Hello my name is Brina. I'm from Chicago, USA and live in Ohio. I have always been interested in different cultures, especially Hispanic culture and history. Two of my favorite authors are still Isabel Allende and Julia Alvarez. I joined this group to learn more about a variety of cultures and am excited to participate here.

Cedricsmom,

To post a book on the bookshelf, click on the bookshelf link in the upper right hand corner of the group's home page. Enter the title of your book in the search field on the top left (under "Around the World in 80 Books"). Find your book in the search results, and click on the "Add to Group" button.

To post a book under one of the country threads, find the country you wish to post to. Start a comment box at the bottom of the page. Click on the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box. Type your book's title in the search box. A list will appear. Find your book on the list then click the "add" button. The "link" and "cover" options on the bottom enable you to choose to add the link or the picture of your bookcover.

Veronika Gasparyan (goodreadscommotheratseven) | 8 comments Hello :) My name is Veronika
I'm new to a goodreads and I came across this group right away. My favorite books are the true stories and non fictions as well as autobiographies. I am also finishing up my own book about my childhood. Its called Mother At Seven. So, I wanted to see what are the topics and how detailed the discussion can be when it comes to books in general and in case I need an advise or have a question. Plus its seems like the perfect way to find the best book to read :)

message 1923: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy (chrissyblue) Hi everyone! My name is Christina and I'm a college student living in Colorado. I'm studying biology, but I have a passion for the social sciences and for learning about different cultures. While I plan to travel in the future, I don't yet have the resources or time to travel much at this age with school and work, and have never been out of America. Therefore, books set in other countries or written by people with different backgrounds are my absolute favorite. I'm looking forward to reading and participating in discussions in this group. :)

I love reading and talking about books but do not have many friends or acquaintances outside the internet to talk about , so I can only use social networks. I love to read mostly non- fiction or historical fiction about countries in Asia, Africa and on the United States .

message 1932: by Alia (new)

Alia | 0 comments Norwegian person here. I just finished a book about Mandarin (like twenty minutes ago) and went to find some book clubs that would help me. I am a language geek, I want to learn every natural and constructed language there is, and I also want to understand the cultures the best way I can. I consider that to be books, because while interacting with people lets me see someone's culture up close, books practically let me read their minds.

There are international and foreign books at the library and on the internet, but with this group I can know what I'm looking for instead of stumbling upon them.

message 1933: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jmckeit) This is such an awesome group - lots of handy info and resources! So excited to be a part of it! I'm an author from Kansas City, MO, and also a hungry reader--you'd think that would be a given, but I'm shocked to find out how many writers tell me they don't like reading.

message 1934: by Kim (new)

Kim | 4 comments I joined a little while ago, but figured I'd say hi and let you all know that I'm starting the book Heidi tonight, and look forward to discussing it with you guys. :) It will be my first read for this group.

I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada, and besides reading enjoy hiking, gardening, and occasionally writing. Besides classics I'm into reading books and articles on philosophy/ethics, history, psychology, sociology, nutrition, animal rights, feminism... that's all I can think of at the moment... :)

message 1935: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Hi Kim.

message 1936: by Jyotsna (new)

Jyotsna Sreenivasan Hi! I'm a writer, teacher, and second generation American (my parents are from India). I'm heavily into historical fiction at the moment for my new web site, HerStoryNovels.com and I find that I am most drawn to novels from other parts of the world, and/or novels by Americans who are part of a minority group.

Hi, Jyotsna! Welcome to the group! Those are some of my favorite novels as well.

Your website is very impressive. I love how you sorted the books by time period. Would it be alright if I listed the link under our page of resources?

message 1939: by Jyotsna (new)

Jyotsna Sreenivasan Diane, yes, that would be wonderful to have it listed! Thank you!

message 1940: by Audrey Mei (new)

Audrey Mei | 11 comments Hi all!

I'm a Chinese-American writer, classical musician, and language lover living in Germany -- usually in Berlin. I've lived/studied over 20 years in Europe (Finland, Sweden, Germany, Portugal) and also short stints in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Estonia. I'm married to a Berliner and we travel a lot.

Needless to say, I'm a reader of international/diverse/world literature, which to me is "normal."

My father is from Shanghai. I am fascinated by Shanghai. I interviewed my dad and researched Shanghai so much that I wrote a historical fiction/magical realism novel to organize the stories that I heard. I'm now working on releasing "Trixi Pudong and the Greater World" (I'll post about that elsewhere in just a second).

Currently, I'm a work-at-home mom with a 2-yo daughter, and she's reaching the age where I have more freedom to read and write again. I'm excited about this group and look forward to your discussions!

Hi Audrey! I agree, Helsinki is really pretty in the summer. For me, the sea is definitely the best feature of the city!

I noticed a couple of other members who are living in Germany as well. I'll have to take a look at the other threads to see if some of you have recommended any German authors. :)

Finnish, Swedish, and English. Unfortunately my German is not good enough to read a whole book.
