Glorious (sunrequiem) | 7 comments Oops, I forgot to introduce myself on this thread when I first joined a couple days ago. Hello everyone! My name is Gloria and I'm a current high school senior living in Beijing, China. I've lived here for over three years with my family now, and I will be attending a college in the US next year. I consider myself an international student and so hopefully I have the ability to say I've seen different cultures and places. I am enthusiastic about reading and have read a couple of authors in translation, such as Federico Garcia Lorca, Lu Xun, Anton Chekhov, Rainer Maria Rilke, Voltaire, Franz Kafka, Rumi, and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I hope to read much, much more in the very near future! Great to be part of this group.

I think that we are living in a civilization addicted to instant gratification! No one knows how to use a dictionary, encyclopedia or even a telephone directory anymore. Why should they? There's Google now. Microwave ovens, live streaming, movies on Netflix & Hulu, etc. All instant gratification. I don't even have an e-reader. I go to the library and borrow books.
I really don't care for short stories or novellas, but have read them in the past. I like novel, the bigger the better. I seem to be a dying breed, though.

message 1804: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Hey. I'm Lesley and I live in Scotland. I love reading, especially about other cultures. We are such a small world now! I love the classics but I'll read anything that is well-written with good characterisation and I've read a lot of books on psychology, counselling and theoretical works on behaviour/personality, for academic purposes. One of my goals this year is to read more history, science, feminism and hopefully philosophy, although I've set a modest reading challenge this year in place of my usual unrealistic gusto! So we shall see. The idea of being more international in my reading appeals to me, so here I am, although I suspect I already am. Look forward to keeping up with all the discussions.

Welcome to the group, Lesley! We really are such a small world now. I think it is so awesome to have so many people from all over the world here reading many of the same books and learning about each others customs.

Amy (azulaco) | 69 comments Hi. I'm Amy and I live in northern Virginia, outside Washington DC. I'm excited to try this challenge because I have been wanting to expand my reading diversity, both in terms of book settings and in terms of the background of the author. Being a Tourist here is a good start!

Rosemarie | 3958 comments Hi Diane, since I'm so new I want to ask a few questions. I notice that you have quite a few threads. Can anyone join in the discussion? I also notice the four group reads listed per month. How soon and where do you post the reads for the next month(March)? We have an extensive library system here and we can request books on-line. Thanks.

Anyone can join in discussion at any time (even for previously read books). There are 3-4 optional monthly books. I admit, I have not been so good at posting the next month's books in a timely manner as of late. Ideally, they should be listed a couple months out. I will try to improve upon that and get back on schedule. The February books will start tomorrow. I will post the nominations for the March books by tomorrow.

Rosemarie | 3958 comments How does around the thread around the world in 80 books work? I have read books set in many different parts of the world. I see that many readers have a thread where they have organized their books read by countries. I would like to do this too, if possible.

Bibliophile27 | 2 comments Hello, I'm Trijntje from the Netherlands/Holland. I am a high school student. I joined this group to become more familiar with other genres, because I mostly read fantasy books (to my father’s disapproval). I would also like to get to know people from different countries and participate in book discussions, but I am currently a little lost because there are so many the discussions and challenges here. Though I think I can manage: I just finished ‘Monique and the Mango rains’ and loved it. I am really glad that I found this group.

Well, in the Dutch language we love using two letters (mostly two vowels) to make one sound. Like for instance aa, oo, ie, uu, eu, ui, ei/ij and sch (like in the Dutch airport ‘Schiphol’). It is difficult to explain how Trijntje is pronounced, but ‘Trainsje’ is probably the closest a non-native speaker can get. Though I would probably laugh at you if you called me that :P

I understand now. Unfortunately, that is a problem Goodreads has yet to perfect. I believe they are still working toward a solution. I have a few books that I have read more than once with that problem as well.

Fem (femswan) | 2 comments Hi!

I'm Fem, 23, Dutch, living in Belgium, married to an Australian. I love reading and traveling. Very excited about finding this group.

I generally love historical fiction and (auto)biographies, but can really enjoy science-fiction/fantasy as well. I have a long list of classics I really want to read (but never get to..).
Every so often I'll get obsessed with a certain subject and read informative books about it (like fertility tracking or intercultural communication models).

Looking forward to engaging in some bookreading and discussing!

Carole | 9 comments HI everyone, I think I will really enjoy expanding my reading thanks to this group. I learned a bit about Sweden when I discovered several books by Hennings Mankel, and I read a lot of Japanese and Indian history thanks to Sujata Massey , Chinese Americans reading Lisa See and lots of French authors in French. There are many countries I will only get to visit through the literature of your country. So, I look forward to reading authors recommended by members of this group, especially Francophone authors. I live in the Midwest U.S. Carole New Feb.2016

Isabel Simões | 113 comments Hello everyone :) I'm Isabel from Portugal. I'm fairly new to goodreads so I'm still not 100% sure how it works. I just joined this group beacause I love to travel and discover new countries and cultures but since I don't have enought time or resources to do it phisically as often as I'd like I'm trying to do it through books. I'm especially interested to read books for different US states because I'm really interested in US culture and the differences between each state's people and ways of life. I'm also interested to read books from other countries as well of course and I hope I can find new book suggestions through this group! Thanks everyone and looking forward to enganging in book discussions and meeting new people :)

Violet (purplemuskogee) Hello,

I'm working in education and live in London.
I have spent most ofmy life reading classics, either in French or in English, and the last four years obsessing about Victorian literature. Last year after working in a school with a strong south-Asian community I started reading authors from more diverse countries, and this year I am trying to read authors from as many countries as possible - I keep a map as well so I can track down what I have read!

Carroll Devine | 2 comments From my early childhood I loved the thoughts of travel, and had my first train experience at age 7 when an aunt's family took me with them from New Orleans to San Francisco. I fell in love with that magical city, and until I could do traveling on my own I've loved books about foreign places - beginning with "Heidi" and "Alice in Wonderland." Torture for me would be not having anything to read or places to go or dream about going.
