Lori Goshert (lori_laleh) Hi! My name is Lori. I am American but currently live and work in Prague, Czech Republic. I love books of all sorts, but especially classics and historical fiction. My favorite author is Walter Scott. I've often wished I had someone to discuss books with, and I was very happy to discover that Goodreads has book groups!

Hi Jason! I spent some time in Sarajevo as well, about 6 years ago. My favorite place in the world!

Welcome, Rob. My book-shelves on Goodreads are also non-fiction only. Tho I read fiction, I don't review it. Logically, one of my shelves is Travel though Memoir has more titles on it so far. Look forward to seeing what titles you add or recommend.

message 1712: by Brodiew (new)

Brodiew Hello. I'm Brodie. I'm married with three kids under 10. reading travelogues has been my tenuous anchor to nonfiction over the years. From Iron and Silk by Mark Salzman to Alive by Piers Paul Read to To the Field of Stars by Kevin A. Cobb, my interest in travel stories has steadily risen over the years. One of these days I would really like to walk the Camino de Santiago.

Yuuki Nakashima (yuukin) | 4 comments Hello everyone!
I'm Yuuki from Japan!!

I like to learn foreign culture and history through books. And actually, I sometimes learn Japanese culture and history by a book written by a foreign author!!

I love both fiction and non-fiction. Although I'm interested in Mexico (I haven't been there, though) I haven't read any book that is set there. So I hope I can find a good one here. :-)

In addition, I'm a translator and I sometimes translate books that teach you Japanese culture! I'm proud of myself!! haha

Precarious Japan taught me some issues Japan currently has and our culture and national characteristics. BIG WAR, Little Wars was also good. The story is not set in Japan, but I could learn a part of our history. I have read some more books that are set in Japan. Those books made me realize some things that are normal for us but unique for foreigners.

Stephanie | 55 comments Hi, I'm an American living in the Pacific Northwest. I am trying to expand my reading comfort zone outside of fantasy/sci-fi and young adult books. I dream about traveling around the world and thought the idea of reading books about other cultures maybe outside of what I would have considered would be fun. I am an aspiring author as well and I really hope that the greater I expand my reading experience, the better my writing will become. I am excited to see what I will learn from my involvement here!

The (lopsided_dimples) | 2 comments Hello!

I joined this a while ago and have yet to post anything about myself. I am currently going back to school while working part-time. That sums up my life for the moment.

Thank you so much for starting this group, Diane! I feel it important to expose oneself to works from around the world. I recently just found out that only 3% of books published in the U.S. are translated works. I am actively trying to read more translated books. This group is a great way to find recommendations on foreign works.

Sincerely,
Rachel

Hello, Rachel! Welcome! I was not aware of that statistic. Hopefully it will change. There are so many books I want to read that have not been translated into English.

Ran Zilca (ranzilca) | 3 comments Hi everyone! I'm Ran. I am a big fan of road-trip books, especially in America: Travels with Charley, Blue Highways, On the Road, etc. Most prominently Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
These inspired me and always captivated my imagination, until five years ago I got on a motorcycle and rode solo from NY to California. Spent 5 weeks on the road and published my first book about it.

Would love to know if anyone can recommend US road-trip books. I read the classics but I'm sure there are more recent ones that are noteworthy.

Hi, I am Kate from Utah. I love reading classics, and nonfiction. I am also trying to expand my reading through the 1001 books and I have found a lot of new authors I might have never known about.

Currently I am reading Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens .
