Hello there!

I'm Kathryn, I'm 23, and I live in a tiny coastal town in Northern California. I read just about any genre I can get my hands on, but Romance, Fantasy, Young Adult, and Historical Fiction are my all time favorites. I'm here to hopefully find some new book ideas that I never would have thought of reading before as well as read books that give me a good view of other places in the world.

Looking forward to being here! :)

L.W. Clay (laur_clay) | 4 comments Hi. I'm Laura and I just discovered that i like historical fiction...a lot. I recently read "I Am Livia", about Caesar Augustus' last wife and it was amazing. It's by Phyllis T Smith.
I want to find good historical fiction to read. Because I'm very new to the genre and need help, I'm relying on everyone here to lead me in the right direction. :)
I also enjoy sci-fi, memoirs, and Christian books (both fiction and non-fiction).
Hope to make some reading buddies, because i don't have many in-person friends who like to read.
Happy reading!

Hi, Laura...welcome! You might want to check out the Historical Fictionistas group, I belong to it as well as this one, and you can find lots of great suggestions there too. Don't know if you have discovered the Listopia function, but you can find lots of great books there that suit your interests and genres you like.

Try Lavinia by Ursula K. LeGuin. It is a reworking of the Iliad from a female point of view. I liked it. There are many others. Enjoy.

Hi, Laura! Welcome to the group! I just purchased I Am Livia book on Kindle but haven't read it yet. I am glad you liked it. I have heard a lot of good things about it and look forward to reading it soon. I, too, have a weakness for historical fiction and read a good bit of it. I love how HF books transport you to another place in time. I read The Cairo Trilogy: Palace Walk / Palace of Desire / Sugar Street recently and absolutely loved it.
Another good resource for finding books set in a particular era or during a particular event in history is the group: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
It is moderated by one of our fellow ATW80 members.

Cameron Kamran | 3 comments Hi, my name is Cameron and I live in Washington DC but spend a lot of time these days in Africa and the Middle East for work. I'm mostly interested in Middle Eastern historical fiction. I thought I'd share one of my favorites-- an older book about the life of the famous medieval Persian poet Omar Khayyam but with plenty of political intrigue as well. Some will find it interesting, particularly in light of what is going on these days in Iraq and Syria. Samarkand

Look forward to participating in the group.

That is my sad little list. BUT! It will grow, I am sure of it:) As for books, I love too many to count. Genre doesn't matter so much as content, and I'm always game to read any recommendation. I'm stoked to be a part of this group now! WOOT!

Laura | 2 comments Hello! I'm new to the group and dipping my toe into the waters of international fiction. I've set a personal challenge of reading books from all the continents this year, and found this group when looking for book recommendations. I think I'd eventually like to do the 80 books challenge, but feel better starting small. I'm especially interested in fiction or nonfiction written by authors from the identified country or continent. I enjoy books set in other countries by American (or other western) authors but want to push my own boundaries with this challenge and find books that don't approach their topic or narrative from a western perspective.

message 1316: by Will (new)

Will | 2 comments Hi, I'm Will. I currently live in Las Vegas, NV, but I'm from upstate New York. I decided to join the group because I love to read book from other cultures. My favorite regions to read about are Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, but I've read books from at least every (inhabited) continent.
As Far as my travels, I haven't gotten very far yet. I've moved across the country twice, so I've been to a lot of places in the US, but other than that I've been to:
Ottawa, Canada
All over Upstate New York and NYC
San Antonio, Texas
Reno, Nevada
Anaheim, CA
San Francisco, CA
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
and most recently Detroit, Michigan

Elizabeth (needmoreshelves) | 2 comments Hello! I'm Elizabeth, born and raised in the Midwest (USA), and I love vicariously traveling to other cultures via books! I read widely across all genres, and it seems lately I have 2-3 books going nearly all the time (print, audio, and ebook). I'm married with 3 1/2- year-old twins & a father-in-law to look after which doesn't allow me to read as much as I'd like, but I do the best I can. I'm looking forward to reading along with all of you!

Etain Feeley | 2 comments Hi Everyone,

Its as simple as this, I just love reading and I've got worse in later life, as I read all the time, whenever I can fit it in,am attempting to write flash fiction, very new to all of this.. Prefer reading to movies and t.v, visual media, is good but find it sometimes lacks in the sense of the imagination, no matter how good the film or video is perhaps,it will never quite capture the true, essence of a book, the depth and the atmosphere, plus the emotional content, have studied film before, and am not averse to this form of communication in any way, but I would chose the latter, although I do appreciate, both have a special.
appeal., depends on your perspective, I guess.

Really enjoy reading travel and about cultural traditions etc.

Am currently reading "A Mercy" by Toni Morrison.

Hi, Etain! I feel exactly the same way about books vs. visual media. Since I started reading more, I lost interest for television. I have watched very little TV in the last four years.

WroteTrips | 5 comments I travel a lot through books, and since I'm a freelance travel writer, I travel a lot in real life.

I try to find images to go with my reviews, since I like to be able to imagine the place I'm reading about. Sometimes, we choose our travel destinations based on a novel I've read; other times I select a novel after I've gotten a press trip.

My book posts are really part review, part travel feature. I have two up now, but I'm having a bit of a problem. Can anyone tell me how to get YouTube links embeded? I've gotten the images properly formatted, but I can't get the video links embedded properly.

I'm trying to get my Goodreads posts to look like my blog posts.

Thanks for your help.

message 1336: by Ann (new)

Ann L. | 11 comments Hi Everyone,
I am both an avid reader and traveler through books as well as beginning my own mystery series where each book is set in a different country. I grew up stuck in the middle of the woods with parents with no interest in travelling. I had to break out of that in my early 20s and have never (ever) looked back. I did it in a big way by moving to Japan. Since then I have visited over 25 countries. I enjoy reading books set in those countries before travelling to them (but also enjoy reading them while I am on-site). The last number of years I have been increasingly picking up well-written mysteries which are set in the country I plan to travel to. I live in Portland, Oregon, USA right now; but most of all I enjoy expat life.

I should add some examples....though there have been so many it is hard to recall them all. Before travelling to Scotland, I read M.C. Beaton's Hamish McBeth series. Prior to travelling to Israel/Jordan, I read Agatha Christie's "Appointment with Death". Now, as it is looking increasingly probable I will travel to Scandinavia, I am reading Helene Tursten's "Detective Inspector Huss."

I just noticed the World Traveler for Mystery group....but please let me stay in this group too :) To absolve myself....everytime I travel to Germany I re-read Thomas Mann....anything by him, but particularly "Little Herr Friedeman". Setting is in Germany; but I also enjoy getting that 'feel' / 'ambience' of the deeper culture/personalities prior to travel. I feel like an expert on the people before even arriving...probably foolishly so.

Welcome to the group, Alex! Panama is a tough one. There doesn't seem to be too many translated Panamanian authors. I did read The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914 by David McCullough, and enjoyed it.
