Hehe the reason we call it the coast and not the beach is that the beach gives the impression of warmth and calm whereas the coast is cooler, windy and filled with beautiful sights and sounds that one experiences in warm clothing...definitely not swimsuits.
At the moment I don't know but now my curiosity is peaked so I will have an answer soon. Portland is a great place to visit; lots to see and do. Have a great night.

Rose, you really got me thinking . The book set in Depoe Bay (sort of) is Going to Bend: by Diane Hammond . She 's written about five "real oregon " books..have you read her.. where is Smith Family Book Store? Perfect description of why we call it the Coast. I always say that my Southern California surfer husband took off to the beach on his first visit to Road's End with his towel, wearing his suit. We laughed, he was back in 5 minutes.

No I haven't read her books but I will now.
There's a smiths in Portland and in Eugene; I don't know about online. I bet your husband was mighty cold hehe I've seen many a person do the same hehe.

Welcome to the group, Rose! The Oregon coast sounds so beautiful.

As you probably read, Kathryn an I were discussing a few authors and their books which would be great additions to the list for Oregon. I checked with the state online library and they are available here so may be elsewhere.
From my device I can't do the highlighting and author/book references as we should so please forgive me.
M.K. Wren wrote the Conan Flagg mysteries and there are (as far as I can tell) 4 books; and after I saw the cover I do remember my dad reading them. The library only has them in audio format which is great though in WMA not Mp3....oh well I'll have to use the computer.
Diane Hammond wrote 5 books only one of which is shown in audio and they are:
"Going to Bend"
"Seeing Stars"
"Hannah's Dream"
"Homesick Creek"
"Friday's Harbor"
For some reason I can't scroll in this commemt box on the nook but here are the titles for M.K. Wren:
"curiosity didn't kill the cat"
"a multitude of sins"
"seasons of death"
"oh bury me not"
If this isn't on the right thread please feel free to move it wherever it should be. After my discussion last night with Kathryn I couldn't sleep until I checked on these. Its a great find. have a great day.

Good for you Rose. I am so old I held the string for milers like Roscoe Divine to break when they ran the mile. I worshiped Jim Ryan from Kansas who ran the mile in Oregon a few times. I was BEFORE Pre when they didn't let girls do sports. I just finished reading Alberto Salazar's biography of his running history and how he built Oregon Track to what it is today. (Check my reading list) we should add that to books about Oregon too but I haven't figured out how to or where to do that yet. Bill Bowerman was still alive in my time and Phil Knight was in my Sunday School.

I'm Eddie Stack, an Irish writer. My work is mostly set in Ireland and I'm the author of four collections of short stories, a novel and several novellas. My books are on my GR author page. I've just published Borderlines...3 long stories based in Ireland which is getting good feedback. I hope I can give readers a taste and more of the lovely Emerald Isle.

I'd a look at your link...brilliant idea...look forward to delving into it. es

Hi, Anny! Happy to have you here with us!

My name is Shane Kristopher Lambert and I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I have joined this group because I am interested in meeting other writers who are interested in travel destination writing, whether travel guides or works of fiction.
All the best,
Shane

Diane and all: List of my "circumnavigation" is now 30+ books long. I am keeping an online, interactive spreadsheet at my blog, International Reads. I am also trying to post to Goodreads. I just posted today about Kafka's Curse, about South Africa.

I use Google Fusion -- I put a list into excel with the names of the countries. Then I uploaded to "My Drive" at google and created a google fusion map. It makes red dots, not colors, sadly. But I'll bet there are some nifty YouTube videos available about how to make super cool maps in Fusion. Melissa

The most recent book we cover is Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, which is set from World War I through World War II in Britain, so if you've read it please feel free to listen! We go on tangents and get off topic just as I'd imagine a "real" book club does, but we still talk plenty about our likes and dislikes so it should be fun and maybe help you notice things you hadn't before. Thanks, look forward to hanging around :)
