Welcome, Julia...from a retired elementary teacher, living near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I am an armchair traveller too, concerning international travel, at least. This is a great group.

message 1007: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliastrimer) Thanks, Laurel--it's been a joy to peruse some of the threads, and Diane is the most organized, helpful moderator I've found on goodreads :-) Looking forward to learning a great deal.

You are welcome. Let me know if you are interested in any of the challenges. Happy to help, and it takes awhile to figure out how things work. I even taught myself how to make a map for my countries that Ihave visited trough reading. I am not computer savy, but I manage. I am sure you will be way ahead of the game having been a high school teacher, no doubt with considerable computer expertise. One thing for sure, you will add lots of books to you TBR list.

Hi, Julia! Welcome to the group! I hope you will find lots of wonderful places to travel through books. It is so nice to be able to escape to a far away place just by opening a book.

Don't worry, there are also a lot of people who know where Nepal is :D
I have never been there but I associate it to colors: in nature, dresses and scents of good food.
I would like to receive good recommendations of books set in Nepal or by Nepalese writers.

message 1013: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Laurel...I am all for the map idea...gotta get going on that. I travel all the time so will use colors for where I have actually been and where I have read my way there.

message 1031: by Amy (new)

Amy Hi everyone. I have been sort of lurking here and trying to catch up on all the ATW book ideas - I love to let authors do the traveling for me (cannot travel internationally at the moment!). Some favorites of mine that come to mind are: all of Paul Theroux's travelogues via train; A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush by Eric Newby, Bill Bryson's books (particularly enjoyed In a Sunburned Country); books by Jeffery Tayler. I particularly enjoy reading about treks through Africa, Russia, China, North Korea, and any Polar adventures.

I just finished Swimming to Antarctica: Tales of a Long-Distance Swimmer which takes long distance swimmer Lynne Cox all over the world.

Just prior to that I read To the Moon and Timbuktu: A Trek through the Heart of Africa. Both books were fascinating and easy reads.

Hope to follow along with you all and contribute as best I can.

Joana Gomes (tuanita) Hi everyone! I’m a Portuguese girl doing a PhD thesis in France and I love to read since I was 10. I also like to travel, and therefore reading about different cultures and countries is just the best of both worlds!
I still remember how “The historian” from Elizabeth Kostova made me wish I could take some time off work, grab my backpack and explore Istambul!! (have not been there – yet – but I will!!)
Have a nice day!

message 1033: by Jan (new)

Jan Hello everyone! I decided to join this group because I really want to broaden my horizons. I have been reading all your posts and getting some wonderful ideas for my ATW reading plan for 2014. I live in the US and always enjoy reading a holiday book or two in December. I thought it would be fun to read something that takes place in another country. Any suggestions?

Roberto Ferrari | 2 comments " Hallo to everybody,

I have just published a book about the adoption of my second child, a little boy from China.
It was a wonderful experience, not only for the adoption itself, but because China is a Country I love very much. I had the chance to travel for almost a month in the Province of Shanxi and in Bejing and visit with my son places that I could not have visited as a tourist.

In a couple of days my first giveaway initiative will start. If you are interested, have a tour on my author's page.

All the best!

BRAVO Hazel!! (my mother's lovely name too). It's power to the people and it works. Nine years ago the city intended to shut (with 2 months notice) our neighborhood recreation center. Now it is livelier than ever, maintained better and the happiest place in the neighborhood because the whole neighborhood volunteered to take it over.

message 1050: by Powder River Rose (last edited Dec 16, 2013 08:32PM) (new)

Powder River Rose (powderriverrose) | 93 comments My name is Rose and like everyone on Goodreads I like books...in a variety of genre though I must admit not romance, but nearly any bit of history, historical fiction or even a good fantasy or sci fi can be quite pleasant.

I live on the beautiful Oregon coast where many authors have found comfort as well as seclusion and penned some wonderful stories. I share my home with "the evil twins" (two little dogs something along the lines of devito and schwartzenegger) and a great husband.

Because of my active lifestyle and a love of sewing reproduction victorian clothing both for competition and fun I don't have time to sit and read (and besides I just fall asleep) so I've found audiobooks to be my perfect match. Admittedly the audio selection from the statewide online library system is not perfect but we look forward to increased titles soon.

I joined this group a few weeks ago as it sounded like fun traveling atw and across the usa with so many people through books. I've perused through the various threads and am excited to see what others are reading and what they think. With members from all over the world there's knowledge about and discussions of so many books I've never heard of and I'm sure to find favorites among them.

Happy reading now and always.
