Welcome to the group, Smitha! I'm so glad you have joined!

My name is Alistair and ten years ago I left England to move to sunny Australia. I love reading about travel adventures, especially those that have a hint of humour (normally when things go wrong)...
I'm looking forward to discovering some enticing travel books and will add a few reviews from some of my favourites.
Happy travels,
Alistair

Welcome to the group, Alistair! That was a huge move. I don't know if I would be brave enough to move that far away from my home country. What a great experience, though!
Hi All
I'm Julie ,from Ohio . I've been trying to find an online book group that sounds interesting , had challenges ,and is well organized. This group definitely fits the bill . There are so many different challenges to try, I really don't know where to start .
I've always liked reading travel books ,so this should be lots of fun .
I'm not able to do much traveling in the "real world", so I'll do my traveling through books .
I'm excited to get started ,so I think I'll begin with this month's group reads .
I'm VERY impressed with the organization in the group ! Good job to the leader, Diane :)

I'm an American expat living in France.
What a great resource of world lit you've created here! Just poking around for now to see what's what.

There's a great new book called Coyote in Provence

that is about an American expat(woman) in France. You might like it."
Thanks Vivek!

Welcome to the group, Dean! Cool job. I am very envious of your travels. I used to live in the Norfolk area. I have degrees from both ODU and NSU.

Hi, Jim! I would love to live in France! How amazing that must be! Welcome to the group!

Hi Diane! Thanks for the welcome. I agree, travel is wonderful. So you have spent some time in the Folk of Nor? It is so magical here.....
Dean

lol. I spent 12 magical years in the Folk of Nor...

My name is Jennifer. I live in the southern part of Illinois. I have never travelled outside of the United States except through books. The only U.S. states I have been to are Tennessee, Missouri, Ohio, and Florida. In fact, crazy as it seems, I have never been on an airplane lol. I hope to change that all some day. Right now I will have to settle for travel in books. One of my favorite books is The Shadow of the Wind.
I am married, have 3 kids, work full time, and am going to school. I still fit reading into there--it's a necessity for me ;). I am especially looking forward to the UK challenge. I think I am just going to poke around here until the first of the year.
This looks to be an awesome group. Can't wait to get to know some of you!!
Have a great day!

Hi, Jennifer! You certainly are busy. No wonder you haven't had time to travel! Hopefully that will change soon. Welcome aboard!

Jennifer, I do hope you get to travel one day. I do not think there is anything else quite like it in life. I think one of my favorite books that got me going on reading about travel was Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises." I lived in Spain for five years, and was astonished at the similarities from then to now in regards to the culture being the same. Why is that some pockets of Europe stay relatively the same, and we "Mericans" change so drastically? I have always pondered that.

Hi Jennifer,
I'm an Iowa boy myself. I didn't travel outside of Iowa till my mid-twenties. Then I took a trip to the U.K. at twenty-six and that change my life. I became a bit of a world traveler after that and finally settled in Croatia. I still love going back to Iowa, though, but only between May and October.
I always thought about writing a book while in Iowa. No subject matter ever grabbed me. I credit my move to Croatia with giving me the boost I needed to write my novel, Into Hell's Fire. I'm writing my secod book now, and it is set in rural Iowa. Funny how life works, huh?
If a chance to travel abroad ever comes your way, take it. You may or may not enjoy it, but you'll probably regret if you don't try it at lest once. These days, there are all sorts of tour guide books and web sites where you can communicate with other travelers to get the 'lay of the land' before you even reach your destination. Don't be turned off if it is not an 'English-speaking' country, either. These days, for a tourist, it is not a problem, and you should be able to find English - speaking people to help you almost anywhere.
Enjoy life - it is too short. Unfortunately, there are too many fascinating places to see and so little time.
Bye,
d.
Hi
I'm Gary Morris (Gary A.M.Morris to avoid confusion with the other author Gary Morris). I am the author of two recently released books on Kindle: 'The Journals of The Guardian' Book1 'Dawn of a Hero' . and 'Miao Shan' 'The Awakening'.
Both books are the first of a series. Both are YA, paranormal fantasy, and the Guardian is also sci fi.
I am currently trying to organise a massive give way of both books, via Amazon. So if you would like a free Kindle copy, please contact me so I can organise a way of letting you know when to download the books .

Welcome, Gary! Thanks for letting us know about your books and offering copies to group members.
My pleasure, and thank you for being so welcoming. It is truly appreciated :-).

This is such a great idea for a group, can't wait to talk to you guys and read some good books from around the world. Im always open to suggestions, message me anytime :)

Hi, Missy! Scotland is high up on my list of places to see, too. Welcome to the group!

Welcome, Niki! Hope you will find some books here to inspire you. I love discovering new books about faraway places almost as much as visiting those faraway places in person. It is certainly easier on the budget. ;)

Thanks Diane :)

Welcome to the group, Leigh! Happy reading!

I'm Siddhi, from India, 21-yrs old and studying.
I'm new on goodreads and want to make some friends here."
Hi, Siddhi! Welcome to the group!

Behind that facade is someone who started going walkabout at age three. The small town police department reinforced that behavior by buying ice creams before the trip to Grandma's house. I once calculated ground hitching rides of 30,000 miles by the time I reached 27 years.
After HS, enlisting in the USAF, I requested Germany or Japan. In his wisdom my Uncle Sam assigned me to a hole in the ground near Omaha. The flight operations center was across the street from the barracks ... to flights to air bases on both USA coasts. My favorite was a New York Air National Guard flight from Homestead, Florida to Brooklyn Naval Air in a cargo plane where I was the only passenger, along with many cases of Puerto Rican rum.
About four years after leaving USAF, a P&O liner, loaded with young adults returning home down under, took me to Australia and New Zealand. After hitch-hiking back and forth across Australia, working for a while at Kambalda, and then around Tasmania, there was an eventful ride on a French freighter to the New Hebrides, Tahiti, and the Marquesas. The scheduled stop in New Caledonia was skipped due to 1969 tropical storm Colleen.
Disembarking with diarrhea in Panama, I gulped down a quick acting liquid cork and commenced hitch-hiking across Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Hondurus, before taking buses to the USA border. One long ride the length of Panama with many army checkpoints in a car with bullet holes from back window through front passenger window. Delightful man, just out of jail, denying gunrunner allegation, took me to his mother's house near the border.
The following year, after completing a BS degree, where my favorite classes were anthropology and cultural geography, I drove back to Costa Rica, and inadvertently hitch-hiked in El Salvador. Think my benefactors there were death squad. Car repaired overnight at interesting Salvadoran port town.
Upon return to Oregon, too restless to focus on starting grad school, I took out the VW's front passenger seat, inserted a slab of plywood for a bed and headed for the Canadian Rockies and the Trans-Canada highway, with a cooler for beer and bologna sandwiches.
After first year of grad school, some island time on Barbados and St Lucia.
Have been back to Canada and Mexico many times, and to Europe, but those were more conventional, rental cars even.
Now travel confined camera dominated day trips from Central Oregon.

Welcome to the group, Jomon. You had some exciting adventures!

Thanks for the welcome and hope you can enjoy the randomness of my use of your site. To start, I'd like to take a trip from Sunda to Baja 16kya.

Finding this group was quite exciting! A great idea if i wasn’t travelling, but seeing i will be travelling FOR REAL.. and indefinitely for that matter (Ha! well at least that’s the Plan of the Hour).. then i think i’d like to try to make it so i’m reading a book from the actual city or country i’ll be in at the time! I think that would be rather cool!
So.. lots of research to find books situated in the current time (or at least within the last couple of decades), because i want it to be the real city i’m IN, not some past historical or fantasy version.
Anyway.. hi! *waves* And thank you Diane, for running this wonderful group!
P.S. If anyone thinks that i should visit their city/town on my journeys (and maybe get together for coffee), then please do tell me! I like to meet new people and keep my mind open to new possibilities! Plus, i’ll be keeping my eyes open for places i’d like to LIVE for a month or so!

Welcome, Gypsykat! Oooh, what a wonderful plan you have! I am soooooooooo, sooooooooo envious! Please do keep us posted of your travels so that we may travel vicariously through you. Happy travels!

Thank you Diane.. i will! I just wish i could go NOW. It's SO hard to wait until the spring! BUT.. lots of planning to do, so i'm busy and the time is flying by!

Hi Gypsykat, I have sent you a friend request as I would love to follow the books you choose for each country, I would love to do what you are doing but will have to do it from my armchair most likely. I am trying to read a mystery from each country and state in US. Have a great time on your travels,

Of course Carol.. i'd love to have a friend here! :-) And i too, am hoping to find some good modern mysteries to fit the bill! I hope you have a wonderful armchair tour of your own! I really do love the idea of this group!

Thank you Jennifer! It's a big (scary) task, but exciting too! Once it's closer to the time of leaving, i guess the next thing to do is to start a Travel thread? Maybe in the new 2014 Challenges List in the new year? Is that how it's done?

I'm an American writer who lives in France. (My debut memoir comes out next October-- so far away, yet so close!) Anyway, when I'm not writing, I read. And I'm looking forward to getting to know the ATWI80 members. If any of you have any questions about southwestern France, hit me up! I'll do my best to answer you!
Ciao for now!
Bisous!

Welcome to the group, Samantha!

I'm Tony and I'm from a small town in northeast Nebraska. I am currently living in Lincoln Nebraska and recently graduated with a degree in biology. I'm trying to make a little money now to help finance a masters degree in the near future. I haven't been able to do much traveling in my day and the continued education might put a damper on that, but i can always dream! I hope to find a few book recommendations in this group to fuel those dreams:)
