Jane(Janelba) (janelba) | 232 comments Hi I'm British by nationality but have lived in France for 14 years where I am an English as a Foreign Language Teacher and a Cello & Piano Teacher. I was principal cellist of the City Hall Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia for 7 years prior to moving to France. I love to read and am looking forward to this around the world reading challenge to open up my reading experiences and travelling from the safety of my armchair ! Looking forward to getting to know people. I already recognise a few names from the posts.

Welcome to the challenge Jane! The piano and cello are my two favorite instruments. I wish I knew how to play either one of them.

Robyn | 91 comments Hello all. I'm Robyn from Australia.
I watched my daughter do the challenge the first year (refer Tanya - Page 1).
Joined in during the second (got just over half way and with all regions - impressed myself!).
Am greatly looking forward to continuing this year (maybe I can complete the alphabet challenge - hmmm...)
Good luck everyone and enjoy!

Diane, your new picture is positively "wicked". Did you see the musical lately? Maybe some of us could trek by broom for Halloween.

Thank you. Shamefully, I have not seen the musical (and it has been in my town for the last few weeks, and for the second time since I read the book). I would love to see it. I am probably one of the few people who really liked the book (the ratings are not so good).

Mercedes (mercysbookishmusings) Hey hey, Im Mercedes from the U.K. I'm 21 and graduated a few months ago so i've been finding lots of time for reading :) I've never followed a group before but thought this looked fun because i've been reading alot of foreign books recently. Do we decide in advance what books we read and let everyone know or just tell everyone every time we read one?

Welcome to the group Mercedes! You don't need to decide in advance what you are reading, unless you want to.

message 64: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Hi, I'm Jen and I just found this group. :) I have never done this type of challenge before, but I love the idea of it, so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm currently a stay-at-home mom to two boys (ages 5 and 18mos), which leaves me surprisingly little reading time, but I sneak in a few pages whenever I can and listen to audiobooks in the car while my oldest is in school. I also enjoy cooking and running, and I'm always trying to organize and clean my house (a feat with two boys). I look forward to participating!

message 71: by Pepita (new)

Pepita | 240 comments Hi All and thank you Diane for expanding into this new site......Tanya, fellow library colleague in Australia, (page 1) got me hooked on this armchair travel caper a couple of years ago and the first year I think I was short one title to complete the combo of 80 countries and 50 states, actually I did 50 including Washington DC but didn't finish my Alaskan read until a week or so after the cut off date!! Wasn't able to keep up the pace this past year and only got half way round the world and even less of the States of America (I did however read On the Road by Jack Kerouac so felt like I had travelled coast to coast a few times plus a dip into Mexico!). Anyway, now I can't kick the habit of sussing out where a book is set before deciding to go there.....
As I mentioned I work in a library so good for customer service to be able to recommend different features of a book, other than story or genre etc. and my 3 children all grown up and flown the coop...mostly...so no excuse for not giving it another go!

Dee (austhokie) | 438 comments haven't been stationed overseas yet (was in Norfolk for 4 years) - but done some decent port visits - Seychelles; Jordan; Oman - I spent a lot of time in 5th fleet. Welcome to the group Karen! I'm so glad that you joined! How cool that you're going in alphabetical order. "L"s are hard. I think I have only managed to read two of them in the two years I have been reading around the world. A lot of the "M"s are challenging too. Several years ago I "cooked around the world" and featured a different country each week, going in alphabetical order, so you are now reading on the same route that I cooked in!

Kristina | 274 comments Hi! My name is Kristina Marie and I live just north of Atlanta. I recognize some people from TNBBC and the Seasonal Reading Challenges. It has become harder for me to compete in the season challenges so I am here to have some fun in challenges that can be "carried over". I am also looking forward to the group reads next year!

message 85: by Diane , Armchair Tour Guide (new)

Diane | 13052 comments Welcome to the group, Kristina Marie! There are quite a few of us from both TNBBC and The Seasonal Reading Challenge. You live near me (I live in Cobb County)!

message 86: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 438 comments hi Kristina Marie - i'm in TNBBC and SRC as well...I try to integrate all my challenges...I did a pretty good job with this one and SRC this season...I think I managed to fit like 10 books in from different countries and I did the same with last season's as well

message 87: by Diane , Armchair Tour Guide (new)

Diane | 13052 comments I took the first season off in over two years from SRC (and it is killing me!). I have been able to fit the majority of books I have read into both challenges, plus a few other challenges I have been participating in.

message 88: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 934 comments I'm trying to do the SRC, the challenges in this group, three library book groups, and occasionally reading the monthly book for a few online groups. I've been able to use most of the books for more than one challenge. I'm probably not going to complete any of the challenges soon, but I'm not going to let it worry me. The important thing is to enjoy the reading and the groups, and maybe learn a few things along the way.

It's never too late to start. I have found that sometimes it seems to take longer determining what books you are going to read than it does to read them.

Hi, I'm Antía. I'm 31 years old and live in Spain. Besides reading, travelling is my biggest passion.. still, I haven't got the chances to visit most of the places I dream about so reading about other countries is a way of comforting myself about it. I have been reading mostly european classics and english-american contemporary fiction, but I always try discovering new authors. I don't know if I'll be able to join your challenge (too many books on my to-read shelf and not enough time) but I hope you can recommend me and I can read new books with you so I can learn about other cultures

message 95: by Diane , Armchair Tour Guide (new)

Diane | 13052 comments Welcome to the group, Antía! Very well put sentiment. That is exactly how I feel, too.

message 96: by mstan (new)

mstan | 130 comments Hi everyone! I am a school-teacher from Singapore. Dee from the SRC (a challenge I am part of) mentioned this group and I found it really interesting. I have unfortunately tended to (unconsciously) limit my reading to more traditional settings featured in the Western canon, and am looking to expand my horizons. I will try the US roadtrip challenge together with the frequent flyer challenge, but will take both at a relaxed pace...
