Megan | 47 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Megan, and I'm from Ontario, Canada. I just stumbled upon this group this morning and think it's a great idea. I love traveling and reading, and sometimes I have a hard time deciding on what to read next, so this challenge might help provide direction (no pun intended).

Since I started late in the year, I will likely be a Circumnavigator (plus I won't have to worry about deadlines). The mini-challenges look like fun, too!

Hello Anoop! Welcome to the group! I admit I had to look up what an ambigram is. They are beautiful and look like they would be difficult to create. Very cool.

message 807: by Lade (new)

Lade (ladet) hi. I'm Lade. I live in Nigeria. I love to read. I've been reading books since I was 2 or 3. I will generaly read any.
book I can get my hands on but my favorites are chick lit(especially British), romance (erotica) [except paranormal ugh!], horror, mystery, thriller, suspense, crime, most historical fiction.
I want to be a psychologist. Currently I'm a makeup artiste and a photographer-in-training. I like to bake and do crafts(mostly making accessories from local fabrics).
Once in a while, I write short stories.

One of my many many dreams is to travel to at least half of the countries in the world.

Hi, Lade! Welcome to the group! You do read from a lot of different genres. I really try to, but there are some I enjoy more than others. I think it would be absolutely wonderful to travel to at least half of the countries of the world. I am off to a rather slow start on that one!

Mike Clinton (mikeclinton) | 13 comments I'm Mike, living in the suburbs of Philly. Traveling and reading have both always been great interests of mine, so it's ideal when I can combine the two. In fact, one of the things that I most look forward to when planning a trip in advance is reading history, literature, and whatever else may tell me more about where I'm going. Not going anywhere this summer, though! except in my reading chair....

Ken (kendoyle) | 3 comments Hello everyone,

I just joined the group because I enjoy reading international fiction. I have a bias for Indian fiction, but will read most other types as well. I recently published a collection of short stories set in Bombay, India.

I'm currently in the middle of relocating from Wisconsin to a small town in Delaware. I look forward to the discussions here and hope to add many more books to my TR list :)

Welcome, Ken! Indian fiction is one of my world literature favorites. India is a very fascinating place (and it has the best food!). I hope to go there for real one day. You will have to help us find more books set in Delaware, too. It seems to be the hardest state in which to find book settings.

message 822: by PorshaJo (new)

PorshaJo Hi everyone,

I live in the US in Pittsburgh. Traveled for years and now I enjoy reading about travel and different destinations. Reading "Nothing to Envy" right now and looking for a good book on India to read next.

message 823: by Allyson (new)

Allyson Porsha-have you read The Raj Quartet? It's a great set of books that take place in North India during the Raj. There is also, of course, Shantaram, which is a brick, but a great story. If you want humorous nonfiction, try "Holy Cow." Each chapter is about a religion in India and it's a fun read. Last one, I'll recommend-we lived in India several years ago and Kiran Nagakar visited my book club there. He is not well known outside of India, but writes with the beautifully descriptive style you find there. He wrote a couple of books, "Cuckold" and "Ravan and Eddie." It's possible to buy these outside of India, but you have to do a little searching. Happy Reading! Allyson

Thanks for all the suggestions Allyson. I have heard about 'Holy Cow' and thought about that and still never read 'A Passage to India' for some reason. I purchased this some time ago so that is moving to the top of my list. I will check out the others that you suggested too.

Hello ! My name is Tia and currently I am living in Oahu , HI ; military wife and ex Navy. We move a lot and I have traveled my fair share but I would love to do more of it. I am always watching the travel channel and travel/cooking shows so I always have that itch to go to new places. This sounds like so much fun and I can not wait to start my journey around the world. I have been drawn to reading books about Detroit and South Florida this year so I am ready to venture farther out.

I've gotten interested in book outside of the just the USA and I'm really interested in checking out some of the book recommendations. I've never traveled, but I have a strong passion to do so once I have the resources and finances to do so. This upcoming semester in school I'll be studying French, and on the side I enjoy practicing Korean.

Once again, I'm glad I found this group, and I can't wait to browse and check out all kinds of new books from other cultures.

My name is Laurel, I am from Canada, and have been doing road trip USA and Canada challenges on my own, as well as keeping track of books from other countries. I thought might as well be part of this group, since I am doing some of the challenges already. I know I will meet lots of new and interesting people who share my interests. Joanne Hi Everybody! Since joining GR I have been loitering around the young adult and paranormal sections successfully adding new and exciting books to my 'to read' list. It was only last night I realised I have been neglecting one of my favourite genres. I love to travel and more importantly I love to read about new lands and get inspiration for future trips. I look forward to adding more books to my 'to read' list and countries to my 'visited' list :)

David Bell (davidefcbell) | 2 comments Hi. I'm David Bell, a writer/illustrator/creative in New Zealand, having moved here from the UK 16 years ago. So I guess I'm well travelled! Books have always been a great way to travel without the inconvenience of baggage allowances. From my early reading of TinTin, through to Hornblower and Flashman, and on to so many I really don't have time to list them all here, I feel like I've been round the world both geographically and throughout history several times over. My feeling is that the best travel books are those with stories and characters and adventures. But one 'factual' travel book I've always held in my head is Michener's Iberia- if you read it you'll live in Franco's 1960's Spain for a few weeks. And pretty much any of Paul Theroux's and Bill Bryson's travel books are magnificent. Guide books don't count in my definition of travel writing. But that doesn't mean I don't have a wall full of them!.

I started out in 2009 (about a third of the way through – currently in Chad!). This group is great for ideas and suggestions as I am constantly reviewing my ‘to read’ list (my main stipulation is that books must be set post-1990).

Hi, Ásdis! Welcome to the group! You live in one of the places I want to see most. Your country is so fascinating. It used to be hard to find English language books set in Iceland, but so many Icelandic authors are publishing their books in English now. I now have a rapidly growing tbr list of books from Iceland. I hope to see it for real some day. Happy reading!
