Thank you!

You might try adding soothing music and a good reading light as well as a very comfy reading spot.

Hi, Christian! Welcome to the group! Your advisor is right. Hopefully, the headaches will go away soon.

I'm Malaysian, a GoodReads author, and my novel, THE GHOST BRIDE, will be published next August by William Morrow/HarperCollins in N. America, Hot Key in the UK & Commonwealth. Set in 1890s colonial Malaya, it's based on a peculiar custom amongst the Chinese in Malaysia called a spirit marriage, where a living woman is married to the dead. I'm addicted to books, a frequent haunter of libraries and bookstores, and am looking forward to good literary conversations in this forum!

My name is George and I recently came across this group and thought I'd give it a shot. I love reading especially about history, anthropology, and geography. I guess this group suits me pretty well. I'm excited to dive into some of the challenges. Thanks!

Welcome to the group, Christen!

Welcome, Yangsze! Your book sounds wonderful! I will definitely look for it when it is released. It is very hard to find English-language books written by Malaysian authors.

Welcome to the group, George!

Hello. I've finished reading an author from every country, and now I'm finishing up some random territories and making better substitutions. I joined so I can continue to become familiar with international authors.

Welcome, Dalaina! I don't know which statement amazes me more, that you are the Mom of 4 preschoolers or that you live in the Amazon jungle! Wow! When do you find time to read? I would love to here about your experiences in Peru. It is a place I have always dreamed of visiting.

Haha. In the bathroom, with the door locked! Actually, our village is tiny with nothing to do after dark since we have no electricity yet (solar powered satellite internet), so most nights after bedtime is book time! I usually plow through 1 per week.

Welcome, Osho! I am so glad you have joined our group! I consider you to be a bit of an authority on international authors and I am honored to have you here as a member. I have read a book set in every country, but I still have quite a few countries of which I still need to read books from resident authors. I think I will be circling the globe for a few more years to come.
Thanks, Diane. I see no reason for us to stop reading! I was happy to open this group and see that you were the moderator since I've enjoyed your posts and reading selections in the 52 books group.

Hi, Juliebird! Welcome to the group! What an awesome job you have! What has been your favorite place so far?

My name is Amith Vikram 25 yrs old. I love writing short stories, have special interest in ancient history and i love travelling.

Diane, thank you! :) Hmmm, it's a tough call. I think my favorite place was probably China. The people there was amazing, the food was interesting and the culture was awe-inspiring. :) I was able to go to Hanghouz, a tiny little village; Pingguo, a very small city; Kunming, a larger and very beautiful city (with great weather) and Beijing. It was just phenomenal and I recommend everyone go once in their life! :o)

Ooooh, I want to go there so bad! I just love reading books about China. I really hope that I can visit there someday.

Hi, Amith! Welcome to the group! You do have a beautiful name.

I am Gill from a little hamlet Lumbutts Village, in Yorkshire in the UK. I love reading books from around the world. I am particularly into Chinese and japanese literature. I used to live in Laos so reading Dr. Siri series has been a lovely reminder of the place. I have 2 kids aged 7 and 5.Looking forward to reading the chosen books and having discussions

Hi, Emily! How wonderful to be living in France! France and Ireland are the two countries in which I would most want to live. I guess I will have to live vicariously through all the group members living in those countries. I am so glad you have joined our group. I hope you will enjoy traveling through books to other lands.

Hi, Gill! I love Chinese and Japanese literature as well. There are so many wonderful books from that part of the world. I read my first Dr. Siri book last year and really enjoyed it. Laos must have been an amazing place to live in. I am so glad you have found or group.

Yep, I'm Teaching English as a second language.

Welcome to the group, Margaret!

I've been doing some armchair travel reading recently and thought it would be interesting to join a group like this. I note that this group recently discussed The Hare with the Amber Eyes, which I recently enjoyed reading and reviewing.
I live outside Washington, DC and love to travel. I'm not so keen on challenges and list-making, but I do enjoy a good discussion and hope to find many here.
Right now I'm reading Peter Fleming's News From Tartary, so somehow I inadvertently am on course for this month's country.

Hi Christian,
I have this problem as well as arthritic hands so that holding large books open can be painful. You might try audiobooks, which are easy to listen to while you're doing other things -- I listen to them while I take walks, cook dinner, and clean house as well as on car trips. I actually find that I remember what I have heard better than what I have read. Recently, for example, I greatly enjoyed listening to
The Hare With Amber Eyes: A Family's Century of Art and Loss, which was a book that was under discussion here last month.
Your college adviser is right, I might add.

Hi, Julienne! Welcome to the group! I have always wanted to travel to the Philippines. It looks like such a beautiful place. What books or authors do you recommend from the Philippines?

Thank you! I will be sure to check them out.

Hi, Alyson! Welcome to the group! I just love hearing where group members live and what they are doing. What a wonderful experience that must be to be teaching in Argentina! I don't think I would be too fond of the 9pm dismissal, though!

Wait... when does your school start because that sounds insane! I have a weird schedule too in Poland. (I'm teaching ages 7-18). We start at 1p and let out around 8p. But if you're working from the am to 9pm then WOWOWWWW. I commend you, girl! And Argentina... ahhh, I have dreams of bicycling through South America and Argentina is on my "MUST SEE" list.

Luckily my smallish city still holds to the tradition of siesta so we take a break from 1pm to 4pm... so that makes it doable! But it is somewhat intense (I'm definitely enjoying our summer break now!). And yes, Argentina is definitely a MUST SEE country - let me know if you're ever down here!

Ana

I'm from England, but have been living in Russia for probably too long now. Hopefully that perspective will mean I can help some people out here in seeing a little more into Russia via reading.
I have some reasonalble travel behind me, seeing as I'm not so young any more, but not a big traveller by many people's standards, and started very late, but am always keen to know the experience and perception of those from other parts of the world, paticularly lesser known places. Seeing films from the less dominant countries is something I like to do too, though we're always distracted by the popular, local, easier to understand or culturally reasurring.
So this group will hopefully both remind me to have a broader view and also point me towards some worthwhile reading about places and viewpoints 'alien' to me, but all too real at the same time.

Ana"
