Cristian | 1 comments I'm Cristian and I live in Texas. I am barely attesting to read more books mainly because my advisor in college said if I wanted to travel and discover the world, books will be the best way to start. I'm hanging in there, I get headaches when I read books so I take small breaks. I still love it, though. I'm reading 'The Alchemist' and like it so far and hope to read many more like it.

You might try adding soothing music and a good reading light as well as a very comfy reading spot.

Yangsze Choo | 14 comments Hi everyone, I've been a member for a few months and have loved reading everyone's posts. International fiction is one of my favourite genres, particularly authors such as Haruki Murakami, Vikram Seth, and Viktor Pelevin.

I'm Malaysian, a GoodReads author, and my novel, THE GHOST BRIDE, will be published next August by William Morrow/HarperCollins in N. America, Hot Key in the UK & Commonwealth. Set in 1890s colonial Malaya, it's based on a peculiar custom amongst the Chinese in Malaysia called a spirit marriage, where a living woman is married to the dead. I'm addicted to books, a frequent haunter of libraries and bookstores, and am looking forward to good literary conversations in this forum!

Welcome, Yangsze! Your book sounds wonderful! I will definitely look for it when it is released. It is very hard to find English-language books written by Malaysian authors.

Dalaina May (dalaina_may) | 6 comments Just found this group and love the concept! I'm Dalaina. Wife and a mom of 4 pre-school boys and currently living in the Amazon jungle in Peru (though I am from the USA). I've always loved books that give me a real picture of what it is like to live in other places. Looking forward to plowing through some of these challenges!

message 564: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello. I've finished reading an author from every country, and now I'm finishing up some random territories and making better substitutions. I joined so I can continue to become familiar with international authors.

Welcome, Dalaina! I don't know which statement amazes me more, that you are the Mom of 4 preschoolers or that you live in the Amazon jungle! Wow! When do you find time to read? I would love to here about your experiences in Peru. It is a place I have always dreamed of visiting.

Haha. In the bathroom, with the door locked! Actually, our village is tiny with nothing to do after dark since we have no electricity yet (solar powered satellite internet), so most nights after bedtime is book time! I usually plow through 1 per week.

Welcome, Osho! I am so glad you have joined our group! I consider you to be a bit of an authority on international authors and I am honored to have you here as a member. I have read a book set in every country, but I still have quite a few countries of which I still need to read books from resident authors. I think I will be circling the globe for a few more years to come.

booksofthedead (jypsel) | 7 comments Hi, I just joined today! I'm Julia and although I'm originally from Orlando, Florida I travel around the world teaching English. I'm currently in Poland until September and after that... who knows! I've been to Spain, Costa Rica, Poland, Germany, China, Russia and various states in the USA (although I really must see more!) When I saw this group, I almost squealed. Travelling and reading are my two passions so this is perfect! I look forward to meeting all of you :)

Diane, thank you! :) Hmmm, it's a tough call. I think my favorite place was probably China. The people there was amazing, the food was interesting and the culture was awe-inspiring. :) I was able to go to Hanghouz, a tiny little village; Pingguo, a very small city; Kunming, a larger and very beautiful city (with great weather) and Beijing. It was just phenomenal and I recommend everyone go once in their life! :o)

Emily Decobert | 53 comments I am an American living in Lille, France with my French husband named Ben and called Boo (by me alone). Historican by education and teacher by trade, I often travel backwards in time as well as around the world. Since joining I have realized I stick to the countries of England, France, and USA too much and I'm looking forward to traveling to 80 different countries, though I wonder if I can do it in a year? Well, the challenge is half the fun. I am following no set pattern, just crusing the world (I forgot what group that puts me in) and hoping to reach the big 80.

Hi, Emily! How wonderful to be living in France! France and Ireland are the two countries in which I would most want to live. I guess I will have to live vicariously through all the group members living in those countries. I am so glad you have joined our group. I hope you will enjoy traveling through books to other lands.

Margaret Hello! I just joined the group and have been checking out all the different discussion threads. I don't think I'll be going around the world in 2013 but I'm thrilled to see Les Miserables as next month's read, so I hope to participate in that discussion. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia, homeschooling my two young teens (who also love to read).

Kay | 7 comments Hi everyone,

I've been doing some armchair travel reading recently and thought it would be interesting to join a group like this. I note that this group recently discussed The Hare with the Amber Eyes, which I recently enjoyed reading and reviewing.

I live outside Washington, DC and love to travel. I'm not so keen on challenges and list-making, but I do enjoy a good discussion and hope to find many here.

Right now I'm reading Peter Fleming's News From Tartary, so somehow I inadvertently am on course for this month's country.

Hi Christian,

I have this problem as well as arthritic hands so that holding large books open can be painful. You might try audiobooks, which are easy to listen to while you're doing other things -- I listen to them while I take walks, cook dinner, and clean house as well as on car trips. I actually find that I remember what I have heard better than what I have read. Recently, for example, I greatly enjoyed listening to

The Hare With Amber Eyes: A Family's Century of Art and Loss, which was a book that was under discussion here last month.

Your college adviser is right, I might add.

message 590: by Julienne (new)

Julienne de Villa (juliennekae) | 15 comments Thanks! Oh you should! We have a lot of beautiful places here! Well, Bob Ong is a very famous author here however most of his books are in Tagalog though. Samantha Sotto's Before Ever After is such a amazing read. Also I heard Marisa de los Santos' and Melissa dela Cruz' books are good too :)

Alyson | 5 comments I´m inspired to join this amazingly organized and very international group! I´m from North Carolina but live in San Juan, Argentina working as a high school teacher... love the concept of one country/one state per month and the mini-challenges (think I´ll challenge myself to do a South American tour!). As a teacher in a city where the school day extends to 9 pm everyday, I don´t think I´ll be able to keep up with the more speedy travelers but if I read 24 books this year I´ll be proud and inspired to go for more next year!

Wait... when does your school start because that sounds insane! I have a weird schedule too in Poland. (I'm teaching ages 7-18). We start at 1p and let out around 8p. But if you're working from the am to 9pm then WOWOWWWW. I commend you, girl! And Argentina... ahhh, I have dreams of bicycling through South America and Argentina is on my "MUST SEE" list.

message 595: by Alyson (new)

Alyson | 5 comments Juliebird:

Luckily my smallish city still holds to the tradition of siesta so we take a break from 1pm to 4pm... so that makes it doable! But it is somewhat intense (I'm definitely enjoying our summer break now!). And yes, Argentina is definitely a MUST SEE country - let me know if you're ever down here!

Limey (limeymonkey) | 5 comments Hello.

I'm from England, but have been living in Russia for probably too long now. Hopefully that perspective will mean I can help some people out here in seeing a little more into Russia via reading.

I have some reasonalble travel behind me, seeing as I'm not so young any more, but not a big traveller by many people's standards, and started very late, but am always keen to know the experience and perception of those from other parts of the world, paticularly lesser known places. Seeing films from the less dominant countries is something I like to do too, though we're always distracted by the popular, local, easier to understand or culturally reasurring.

So this group will hopefully both remind me to have a broader view and also point me towards some worthwhile reading about places and viewpoints 'alien' to me, but all too real at the same time.
